How I rank our offensive players.
1 ) Roethlisberger. He’s in his prime, Ben put up MVP type of numbers with uneven pass protection. Without him we are a 6-10 type of team.
2 ) Brown. Simply an amazing package of quickness, hands, and professionalism. His production speaks for itself.
3 ) Bell. A triple threat as a runner, blocker and receiver. Bell fits perfectly in the modern NFL. Bell transformed his body, and is a real factor on broken pass plays or screens. He’ll burn an umbrella type of coverage, and with AB and Bryant scaring the daylights out of defensive coordinators he does just that. Bell worked hard and lost 20 pounds for his sophomore season. Let’s hope he stays in shape and does not break any laws.
4 ) Pouncey. While I think Pouncey is a little over rated as a pass blocker, and not big enough to handle the most physical DT’s or NT’s by himself, he is a very quick center, capable of blocking well on the move or chipping out linebackers. A great player on counters runs, running plays where he has to pull, or screens.
5 ) Beachum. An under rated player who seldom has his name called, Beachum is our lone player capable of holding his own at the left tackle spot. Due to this fact, he is perhaps one of the players the Steelers can least afford to lose. His run blocking is a little weak.
6 ) Bryant. The rookie had some plays that reminded he of Randy Moss. Forget the 40 yard dash 4.41 time, Bryant carries his pads well and has the ability to blow by defensive backs. With his height and natural ability, the Steelers might have the best deep threat in the NFL. Bryant needs work on routes, and post snap reads, but I’m placing him high based on potential and what I saw. His hands are average.
7 ) Miller. Miller is one of the few TE’s that can really block well. He means a ton to the running game, an often helps out in pass protection when one of our tackles is over matched. As a receiver he has lost some speed, and dropped more than he used to. Still a quality player though.
8 ) DeCastro. A little underpowered and can be driven backward at times, DeCastro is a joy to watch on the move. Similar to Poucney in his ability to pull and block on the second level.
9 ) Gilbert. At times GIlbert looks like a really good player. But he has had concentration lapses, and can be beaten by speed rushers. I think the Steelers over paid a tad for his services.
10 )Wheaton. Sometimes Wheaton teases you with great plays. He’s very quick, and faster than he’s given credit for. But he’s also weak as a run blocker, and sometimes lacks consistency that is needed to covert key downs. His talents would be ideal for the slot. Wheaton proved to be a big time upgrade over Archer as the kick off return man.
11 ) Foster. Foster might be our best pure phone booth type of run blocker, but he’s too slow to feature. That’s okay, he works hard and is seldom hurt.. Foster can play RT in a pinch.
Others:
Will Johnson – A solid blocking FB, who can catch well enough.
Adams – Adams had a horrible 2013 and 2014 camp, Adams was serviceable enough when called upon in the 2014 season.
Wallace – A feisty back up guard or center, he can hold his own for a game or two as a starter.
Spaeth – A big TE, he blocks well, and has some value on the goal line or in the 2 TE set.
Gradkowski – A solid back up QB. He did not have to play in the regular season.
Hubbard – a reserve OL player. 50/50 to make the team in 2015.
Archer – Seemly a bust of a 3rd round pick, Archer was awful on kickoffs. He doesn't catch it well either and looked like a small guy afraid to be hit. Not very elusive in the open field either.
L. Jones _ Has looked terrible in both pre-seasons. He’s lucky to be on the team.
Heyward Bey – A fast man who can still stretch a defense, and play special teams.
>>>Overall we are in great shape on offense. I'd like a stud Left Tackle, and a solid.#2 RB. A speedy TE would be nice too.
