Hoot Film - PIT vs. Tenn

1st and ten. A tight spread with Black look. If you saw BLack and read Back Left, you are in my lingo. Good on you. High hats at the snap so this is a toss and go. Coverage is good and Ben hits 30 on the dump route. 10 was open on the backside but Ben isn't looking that way. Blocking up front is fine - Ben is clean. Connor...man, people call him a power back. Look, nobody is mistaking him for Barry Sanders but the guy got a few wiggles. There is more to him than bruiser.

2cnd and 3. Brown Spread Left (Te on the left)...yup, its my lingo, not the Steelers but I will learn you my way. anyway, two reciever to the TE side so we got a trips left look. JuJu on the Split end on the left (thats a "Y" cope...hahaha...just seeing if you are out there). Seriously though, its the routes here that are important. I can't see who is the Left side SE (X). I assume Moncrief. He goes deep. TE (vance) is crossing from left to right on a 10 yard cross. The slot reciever (Switz) crosses underneath him. You get a short and mid crossing route from left to right with X going deep. Y (juju) is dragging across agasint this action towards the space left behind it. Easy toss from Ben to JuJu at full speed and gets the first.

1sta and 10: **** 30. The video cut here is a bit tight so I can't see the formation presnap very well. Looks like a little Brown Set on the spread. Looks like the TE may be Left. JuJu shows a little crackback action on the facke handoff. He drops it and peels to the out route and Ben hits him. Switz is the clearing route but **** not bitting....they zoned up but it doesn't matter. JuJu got 6.

second and 4: early cut again on video. Looks Brown Set on the Spread Left. This time the handoff is real and Conner is on the stretch run for 2 yards. 66 is pulling and I thought he had a nice kickoout block but he lost it. Conner gets the 2 yards, but 66's man made the play.

3rd and 1: Edmumds brother trey makes a nice gut run for the first down. Points for Trey there.

Next play is the Ben TD toss. Fieler good here and Conner also good on the pressure pick up. It keeps Ben clean. That TD to JuJu is the right throw, but Ben also had Vance for six if JuJu isn't there. At the end of hte play, Big Ben hugs Decastro. What a ****** leader he is...he didn't hug his receiver. (yes, that is tongue in cheek. always take care of your hogs).

2 poin try- Jay Sam just slips. Don't think he would have gotten in though.

Kickoff - 44 switches over 2 lanes on the coverage on a designed play. He is untouched and in great position on the coverage. 'Cept 33 is already there making a fine open field tackle.

shhh....do you hear that? I do...a cold beer is lonely. Imma fix that before we go D.

Grant (sometimes known as Gilbert) was on the coverage unit. Just noting it.

Defense. 1st and 10, **** 15. This is an ace back in the I set, but the front is balanced 2TE, 2 WR formation. Simple handoff to the tailback heading left to the off tackle. Just a 25...no pulling OL.
This is basic football here and worth noting...I wish you could see it as I type. Dupree has Run Force or Contain. He basically stops the sweep. This is going to leave an "alley" off tackle (the defensive OT). This is where t he guy I call Anchor comes in. Anchor isn't supposed to get up field because that leaves a gaping running lane. Anchor here is Barron. The backside ILB is Vince. He presses...that is the backside blocking opens a bit of a hole and he tries to shoot it. This will shut down a cutback run. The OG slides off the NT and tries to get Vince. This is where Vince excels though. He handles the OG, the RB tries to turn the play back towards the center and Vince cleans him up. Nicely done V-Will. Nicely done by the entire defense.

2 and 8. Trips to the top and Black on the Gun. Barron is stacked behind Bud on the defensive right. Presnap he moves up and outside of Bud. S fills into the "Will" position behind him. OT now has to deal with Bud crashing. Barron has the Run Force now althought it is a pass play. Barron has a free run at QB who has to dump it to the RB. Pressure causes him to overthrow the back and INC. The guy who has the flat on this? I can't see the number but I think Davis who shifted up to "Will" after Barron shifted to the line and committing to run force or pass rush. This is good disguise. Barron makes this play but the stat sheet won't show it because he didn't get a tackle.

3rd and 8....The bookends of Dupree and TJ are coming hard, but it is Tuitt who gets in there on the inside pass rush lane. On the play, Tuitt and Cam have the inside scramble lanes and TJ and Dupree have the outside lanes. They all get good pressure...basically the QB is just screwed here. Good on the Defensive Front.

Steelers rush 8 on the punt and darn near get there. That punter is cool as ice and kicks the crap out of it. He gets it behind Switz by a long way. That is a probowl punt right there. **** holding tho so kick again. He kicks the **** out of it again. I hope Tomlin took notes there...you don't need hangtime when you can kick it 70 yards out of the endzone. I noticed and am turning Tchaikovsky off and queueing up ZZ Top now.

1st and ten: MR in the game. I'm now lolking for DSpence (82) and Gentry (81).

All right, here we go ball watchers....jay sam is a beast on th is play. He is ACE back in an I position. Its a 25 (off tackle left). He goes 12 yards and looking great! yay JSam! But wait, there is more to this...Foster is pulling from left to right. YOP, you read that correctly. It is an off tackle play to the left but the OG is pulling the other way. A bit of misdirection, right?. Here is the thing. 71 (fieler) is on the backside with Vance. Fieler doubles down with the DD which leave Vance alone on the DT. Vance gets beat and the DT is in the backfield behind Foster's pull. Dude is backfield while JSam is getting the handoff. JSam got big ugly in his grill. so he bounces it left making the DT miss and cranks out a BADASS 12 yards. Folks, I don't think this was a misdirection play...I think JSAM made donuts out of ****.

Grimble was also on the field with a nice block.

first and 10. MR is under center with JSam in the "I" set again. This is just a basic Pro formation (two split ends, a flanker, and TE). This is the TD to Washington. There is no move by Washington....he just whips the coverage straight up. I am real excited about Washington this preseason. I might have a man crush on him as well.

they kick short on purpose. I assume to peek at the coverage guys. A lot of bodies near by but no plays...31, 33, 34, 44 or 45 (can't tell), 42. 37...Kicker makes the play.

**** on the ball...next play is a little route that TJ is covering. It goes for about 10 but what catches my eye is the DL play. I think it is Tuitt. Position is correct but I cant' see the number. He gets double teamed but gets off with a nice little "OLE" move. big deal? that is against 5-600 pounds on four legs. I give the man his ends there. (Did I just do that? **** you AB. I got my man TUiTT). LOL! Just seein' who is awake out there.

next play is a little off tackle to the short side of the field. Basically a 26 but the back takes it wide due to the train wreck up front. The OT Gets up field and delivers a solid hit on Vince. The backside OT (I htink OT) tries to cut off Barron but there is small speed mismatch here. Barron's bigger issue is Vince lcoked up with the playside OT. No matter, TJ squirts through and makes the play. I call this out because he had some help from a guy I have called out for not liking contact. THe guy takes on their TE who is 260. If the back goes further outside, this guy spills the play to the sideline and out of bounds. Who? 25....artie burns. Good job Kid.

Next play is hard to explain...I should probably draw it but not gonna... so basically shoing the same kinda 26 run to the short side of the field (offensive right in this case) but the QB fakes handoff and bootlegs back to the left and hits a wide open receiver. VWill appears to have been beat on the play so lets yell at the DC and VWill. Rewind. It is a tight set with playflow to the offensive right. We have 8 in the box and Edmunds crashes at the run action away from him. The X reciever (offensive left split end) goes post and clears out Nelson. Nelson is clearly M2M.. The backside TE drags the line in front of the bootleg...that is he is working right to left. Both Vince and Edmunds are on him. By the time the QB gets to the left hash, Vince realizes whats up. The Y reciever (Split end on the "Run" side is crossing at LB depth. He peels off to try and cover that guy. Edmunds is still on the TE dragging the line. It is an easy pass for **** but Vince gets the correct angle and gets behind the reciever. WR stutter steps to beat VWill however this is enough time for Edmunds to run him down from behind.

So who ****** up? I can't answer this because I don't know the call. But Nelson was in M2M, that is clear. Burns is the other side CB who would be on the Y reciever if he is also in M2M. Burns does not follow him across the field. So, either he blew his M2M assignment or he thought Edmunds or Vince would pick it up. Again, I can't say for sure because I don't knwo the play call, but I suspect Burns should have been M2M on the guy. On TV, however, it looks like DC had Vince in coverage and we all knw how dumb that is.

Goes to show you that film tells tales that National TV doesn't.

next play is a toss at the EZ. Not much pass rush, but coverage is solid. 22 makes that throw darn near impossible.

2 and 10, PIT 15. Little Brown look...handoff for possible tight sweep to the left side. 28 was blitzing from the other side. Handoff is good with 28 in pursuit. Run Force plays it perfect and clogs the play back up to the 5 hole (or C gap for you defensive dudes). Forcing the play back inside allows 28 to make the play from behind. Hair is too short to be Dupree on the run force role though...its 42...Smith. I was asked about him.

Solid coverage on 3rd. **** end up kicking FG on 4th.I know I am slow from post to post and that I am a nerd who types too much....but...on the third down play Bush starts on the line on the defensive Right. he runs a little game (stunt) over top of Cam which causes an overload on the defensive left. It pressures the QB to throw and he completes but 21 stops the first down (barely). Nice to see Bush on the front line games though.

what a messy game this was with the rain.

On the KO, 54 is lined up on the front row...1 position counting left to right. The blocking sets up to his side and he gets a chip on the man in his lane. Guy bounces off and gets back to the play when the return man cuts it back into him. I don't take points away from Grant ther though....see what I said before about blocking on kickoffs. If you don't believe me, go put on some skates and take on a bull. Nix, Tyler, smith all on that unit that time. Smith part of the up front blocking set up. He gets into a guy.

SOrry for the long tiem on the coverage, but they say rooks make it on ST's. I may as well spend some time watching.

Okay, I gotta pick up the pace a bit...next series summarized:

JSam left off tackle, Gimble decent block. 77 holding.

A lot of motion action by washington..Jsam follows him on a little counter action. picks up a few.

JSam on the underneath dump pass.

Washington out of the Right SE get a catch but comes up short. Nothing stands out on play. It is a nce pass from MR.

The ensuing punt, however, I cna't see who it is for sure, but It hink it is 46. I have no idea who Scales is, but he got run over like a 3 year old girl at the running of the bulls. That **** will get your Punter's IR'ed for a busted ACL. Dude was on his back. **** me. Burns and Layne first men on the coverage. Grant (sometimes known as Gilbert) near the ball when touched up.

79 clogging up some OL while 97 makes a nice tackle on first. Burns bumpin with the reciever away from the play a little bit.

WTH happened to my ZZ Top. ****, stopped tunes when daughter came through to say g'night. back on.

Second and 7...its a pass to the offensive left and I think it is Nelson on the hit to jarr the ball out, Not sure on the db number though...could have been sutton. incomplete. Nice play, but away from the ball, Hargrave was on a little stunt over top of Alualu. Look, y'all watch the ball but I gotta admit I dig the trenches. That is some fun stuff to watch. .

Next play is a pass. Not much pass rush so coverage eventually breaks down. Burns on the first hit and tackle. 55 and 38 right there. TE or WR for **** rides 38 in the back a little bit so Kelly gives him a little love slap. You know, just to let him know he is there. I like the Fiesty.

Damn it was pouring in that game. 3rd and 17. Watt is coming and Tannehill sees it. Dump to the back where Cam is waiting. shutdown to punt. Burns not fooled by a little underneath WR game in front of him. 38 closes a lot of real estate after the dump pass but he is just too far to get to the play. Cam had that squared away.

I saw Burns on the double team holding one of the wide cover guys on the punt.

Next couple of plays are about Jsam. He drops a pass in the backfiled and gets stuffed on a little run.

3rd and long is the INT by MR. Not sure what happened here but a point for fans. When MR plants his foot and throws, Washington had his man beat. He was 12 yards off the LoS and the DB was behind him. When MR rleases, 13 is turning out but he comes back on the a hard curl or combeback. MR threw the out route. That is an easy pick, But this is where fans don't account for the time the ball is in the air. MR thows the ball, there is no question 13 is open. 13 takes a good six or seven steps after ball release. This is a case where WR saw one thing and the QB another. That gets cleaned up in film and talk later.

1st and 10. **** 44. Here comes some live for Vince. Haters beware. This is play action left (Defensive Right) but Tannehill pulls it and sets up to pass. Vince changes direction and takes an arc back to the left and pressess a huge gap. It is an easy sack for the man. Dude might not cover, but he gets into the backfield like a freight train.

Bush beat on the underneath crossing pattern on 2cnd and 18. Beat may not be fair, but he is 7 yards away when the ball is caught. He closes with 34 and stuff the play. I say beat may be a bad word because 2cnd and 18 you keep the short **** in front of you and all is good. This wasn't a crush 'em down and distance. This was keep it front fo you. So we are 3rd and 12. I will take that.

Next play is frustrating for me. Little route right at Burns. He leaves the short route and the medium/deep guy short of the sticks. it is an easy catch and throw but Burns just has to make the tackle and it is short of the first. He misses. 38 comes in and jars the ball out. Not gonna ride Burns too much here, but his bacon was saved by a nice play by 38. Nohting I see so far tells me 38 is going anywhere but the 53.

Of th enumbers y'all asked for, I see smith on the punt coverage unit that ensues. He is not in the play though.

Run and pass to JSam then a downfield foss onthe sidlelines to 80. I can't tell on this replay but it looked like a catch. Refs say INC and we punt. This is a case where I would need 50 replays from the broadcast event to really tell. I have one angle from the far side of the field. Punt.**** ball.

At this point, I want to say the punt was fine as it skittered out of bounds, but after seeing the leg on the **** punter, it really leaves you wanting a bit if you know what I mean.

Finally get to see some Skipper. **** in I formation...basic 26 with the fullback leading. Skipper beats the first block (TE) then gest hit by the FB. which keeps the play inside where 79 can make the play. This is a textbook play where he doesn't get a star in the stat column but he has a huge influence on the play outcome. Good on Skipper.

Next play I think 55 got a little cute. It is basically a 25 run (off tackle to the offensive left). Bush comes in to press the play but finds blocker there. He spins, but he spins counter clockwise which is away from the play. It gets behind him for the first down.

next play they attack left again. 22 and 55 get blocked and it is a big run. Sometimes the other guys do good. This was good **** here.

few more runs but defense is stiff. For Skipper fans, it flows away from him so he is just trailing.

next is a sack. can't see the number but it is RDE for us so either Cam or Alualu.

Punt to touchback and I figure we kneel to get out of half. No such. a couple plays to 80 - Holton. He shows a bit of power on a broken tackle and a little wiggle on the next pass but halftime.

beer me.where is the beer truck promised.

second half - this is where the bubble guys need to shine. Looking for guys listed.

touchback on the kick, first and ten is a run left. Skipper has backside contain so he wn't be in the play. Gilbert (grant) made the tackle. It was a ten yard gain but Gilbert was backside on the play so he picked through a lot of wash to get there. He got a lot of help from 27 closing from the backside as well. Good hustle for 27.

I lied on 51. He did have backside contain but once the play commits to the outside away from him, he takes an angle to make a play at about 15 or 20 yards downfield. You hope he doesn't have to make this play, but you are glad he is there. I used to run a drill I called fox and hound to teach this kind of deep angle trail on a play. This is just good football positioning here by 51 even though the play is away from him.

hoot, awesome stuff. might I suggest a super sonic dvr? you can watch games in 12-14 minutes. one of our former posters let us know about this

HAHAHAHAHA. I love this next one. Again, **** running left. I can't see numbers on the run force but I am pretty sure it is Dirty Red. Buggs seems to have anchor and 54 is pursuit. Force and anchor are absorbe by blockers but they bookend the RB as they should. He is forced to a single lane and 54 damn near rips him in half. Thislittle bubble or tirangle of Force, Anchor, and Pursuit is basic run defense. Good on D here.

a little play action - 31 beat on coverage. I know he is a high pick but Layne hasn't shown me much in preseason yet.

next play is a run right. 51 has Run Force and he keeps the play inside. It goes up the gut (bout the 4 hole) and Big Dan is right there. 54 is local to the play, but this is all about 51 playing force and Dan doing his job. Buggs gets an assist here I think as well. The guy who overplayed it was 44. If Dan misses that play, there is a good chance it goes for a big gain.

**** follow with another 24 run. Big dan right there and probably who most see make the play. But, 44 filled the hole from the LB spot and submiarrined the back. Credit both on the stop.

3rd and 4 **** get a first on a sidelien pass.

another 24 type run and it is a train wreck. I see 93, 44, 54 and 94 all in the pile.

Next play is very nice...a little spread formation with an H back (TE) in the slot. Not enough of a split to call it "nasty" but it is wide. 51 is outside the H back's shoulder. It is play action with the H back pulling so the OT has to kick out to get at Skipper. Skipper just blows past that and gets the sack and the forced fumble. Guy did his job on contain for a bunch of plays away from him, but he gets a chance to splash here and he nails it. Looks like 54 and 38 both keyed on the H back lead though and crossed the field. I think he was a bit out of position. But 94 has the ball off the 51 splash play so we good.

Pit ball on our 45. Dobbs in the game. 85 motions right and a little handoff to 33 with a little counter action behind 85. not much room but he grinds out 5. This is my type of runner.

next play, 85 motions right again with Dobbs under cetner. LG (77) pulls right. It is play action though so this is a little OC response to something he saw before now. No recievers get open so Dobbs runs to his left.

Next play is back to the right...dobbs under center with handoff to 33. Nothing there...72, 74, 76 create a wall/trainwreck but just no room for 33.

dobbs under center, back handed handoff with 33 going right. RG pulls but stumbles out of the gate. there is nothing for 33. I don't know how Sayles is, but the two times I see him tonight it was negative.

OPI on 80 on the next play. Looked a little ticky tacky to me.

View of punt is of punters bum so I can see blocking. Kudos to 33 and 38 (jsam).

**** go back to the runs left. 44 is swallowed up again. 54 makes the play. 54 is very active every time I see him. I just can't see him not making the 53.

Inside run to the 3 hole (left). 54 again around the ball.

Quick pass outside and 27 makes a great open field tackle.

82 does a lot of west to east running on the punt but no North-South.

82 shows the speed on some reverse action. I'd like to say **** like that doesn't happen without good blocks and the guy out there trying to lead....Dobbs. No dirty jerseys though and that is all Spenser showing some speed. Me Like.

33 on a vanilla 26 run. nothing there. Next play Dobbs scrambles out of trouble to make a nice trhow to 15. Kid is an athlete and has wiggles and wheels. If you trying to tie my narrative to your memoroy of the game. This is the play Tomlin challenged and got right. Not that this was a hard call to make (unless you were a zebra). That isnt even close to incomplete.

33 again. kid has heart and I like how he hits the hole...or what is supposed to be a hole. He is fast to the line, I'd like to see him with some blocking front of him. For all the talk of great OL depth with this team...that depth is struggling right now.

back to D. 44 over plays the play action (so does 54). 51 stays home though and keeps QB from scrambling. He tosses to WR near the first down but Layne jars it loose. Best play I have seen Layne make. Based on this sequence in this game....44 gotta get on with his life's work.

OOOOOO ****! Next play is a run. 51 gets off his block and then destroys the lead back and basically trips the ball carrier.

pass play, 93 decimates the OL but cant' finish. QB sidesteps and dumps. gold stars to 51 and 42 on pass rush as well.
