“Kevin loves Philip Rivers,” was all the source needed to say about his boss’s feelings.

Ever since then, when I’d hear media report that the Steelers like Rivers because he went to Cowher’s old school, I would cringe. It wasn’t Cowher who was enamored of Rivers. It’s been Colbert all along, and what I’ve learned this week backs it up.

The prediction

The Steelers, of course, won’t find Manning with the 11th pick, but they might be able to snag the next best thing: Phillip Rivers. He’s the guy they want. Unfortunately, as we’ve learned during these days leading up to the draft, so do a couple of other teams.

There is another quarterback who interests the Steelers, and, if the Oakland Raiders pass on him, Ben Roethlisberger should be the pick.

The Steelers are entering this draft with the idea of drafting either Rivers or Roethlisberger. If neither is available, they’ll decide between (Dunta) Robinson and trading down for offensive tackle Shawn Andrews.

The prediction here is that Roethlisberger will be their pick.

There's no way of ever knowing that for sure, but with the offence they built with Ben, I think Rivers could've done some great things with it as well.

Not me. Ben's escapability in his younger days covered for so many warts in that offense. Think about that 2008 offensive line for a moment, and then think about the statue that is Philip Rivers. Disaster.

Fair enough on the OLine and Ben's escapability. But I think with Rivers, they would've adapted differently is all. I think my main point is that if the Steelers would've ended up with Eli or Rivers instead, then just like with Ben, the QB position still wouldn't have been a question mark over the last decade and a half. That's what allowed them to shore up the oline, TE, RB, and WR positions when it came to drafting on that side of the ball over the years. Ben's gonna be all of ours favorite, but objectively, ya gotta appreciate that crop of QBs in that top 1/3 of the draft.
