When Miami Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore missed just one play after a vicious and illegal hit to the head from Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree, it seemed like something was amiss.

The NFL and NFL Players Association confirmed that Wednesday, when they issued a joint statement saying concussion protocol was not completely followed. The play happened in the Dolphins’ wild-card weekend loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The statement read: “The team doctor took appropriate steps to promptly and fully involve the Unaffiliated Neuro-trauma Consultant (UNC) in the medical evaluation of the player and review of the video. They jointly cleared Mr. Moore to return to the game, but did not recognize that Mr. Moore presented a documented symptom, bleeding from the mouth, that required further evaluation in the locker room under the protocol.”

The statement said “competitive issues” had no impact on his treatment, meaning he wasn’t rushed back because the Dolphins needed their quarterback on the field in a playoff game. The statement also said Moore demonstrated no symptoms after returning to the game.

The statement said the Dolphins’ staff must have a full review of the protocol. Any other violations of the protocol could result in punishment for the team, including fines.

Although the NFL has come under heat for its handling of concussions through the years, give them credit for being transparent in this case. It seemed like Moore returned very quickly after a hit to the head. The NFL immediately said it was investigating, and then released a statement with clear details of what did and didn’t happen. The league hasn’t always been so clear when there has been apparent mishandling of concussions.

The league is wishy washy with these handlings

The NFL Players Association is reviewing the Chiefs' handling of Chris Conley's concussion evaluation in the Divisional Round.
Conley took a helmet-to-helmet blow from Steelers SS Sean Davis, laid on the ground with a dazed look on his face, and wound up missing only one play. The question is whether Conley should have been taken to the locker room for a full evaluation. A locker-room evaluation is required if any player "exhibits or reports signs or symptoms of concussion on the field."

This 1 also was thinking how the hell is he back in the game already

Conley should have definitely been taken to the locker room to be further evaluated.

Not to make fun of the situation but that dude was knocked silly, he was out of it when the camera panned over him.

Agreed. Those guys shouldn't have been allowed back in

I cant wait for the one time Ms. Brady gets a hit to the head and has to be pulled from the game. Goodell will be pissed the **** off.

and in Boston your statement would read: "Goodell will be so facking happy."

What about the hit Birth-defect took against us, he was staggering off the field and only missed a couple plays, But I didn't even know Green had a problem and he misses the rest of the season?????

Maybe I'm crazy, but there was a play in the AFCCG where Hogan was hurt on the play and very slow to get up. He ended up jumping up and hobbling to the line for the play. Two plays later, he scores a touchdown. He never missed a play. Now, if a player gets hurt, or there's any question that they were somewhat shaken up, doesn't said player have to atleast miss one play?

ONLY if game is delayed due to said player. I.E. If clock is stopped for his reason(s).

Salute the nation

I don't have a medical license and could tell that Moore should not have returned to the game, coaches concern for a players health is a joke.

players concern for players health is a much bigger joke

They only have to miss a play if they cause play to stop.. you know by like staying down on the field or needing assistance off.
