Helmet to helmet gone too far

Oh come on now. I love the Steelers as much as anyone. That was helmet to helmet, intended or not,and we were lucky to get away with it. If that was a Packer player hitting Big Ben,there would be 5 pages on here about how we get screwed again by no call!

We were fortunate not to have that called. It was clear as day and should have been a personal foul on Watt

Sigh....I suppose. But I remember when it would have been incidental contact because he grazed it. The state of the league I guess.

If I was Cleveland I would be more pissed. Anyone see the personal foul called on Jabrill Peppers late in their game yesterday? Complete and utter bullshit. It's 3rd and long and they are trying to get back in the game late. Dalton throws a pass down the sideline and the WR catches it, takes 3 STEPS and gets obliterated by Peppers on a gorgeous hit, knocking the ball lose and breaking it up. The hit was picture freaking perfect even by today's ***** assed standards....shoulder to chest. Out comes the flag for "a hit on a defenseless receiver. Both announcers were very annoyed. One of them said, "He took 3 steps after he had the ball, when in the world do you stop being defenseless?" Instead of 4th and long,, Cinci gets 1st and 10 inside the 10 yard line. Game over. I really hate this league.

Sask is absolutely right.

Oddly, the helmet-to-helmet hit by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt on Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Hundley does not appear to be one of them.

With the game tied 28-28, the Packers got one last shot with the ball with 1:20 remaining. On first down from the 18, Hundley dropped back to pass. Watt, the Steelers’ first-round pick from Wisconsin, started the play in coverage before sprinting forward about 15 yards and knocking down Hundley with a helmet-to-helmet hit at the 12.

“There was a hit on the first play. We all recognized it,” coach Mike McCarthy said.

Here, in Article 8, is what the NFL rulebook labels unnecessary roughness in terms of “initiating contact with the crown of the helmet.”

It is a foul if a runner or tackler initiates forcible contact by delivering a blow with the top/crown of his helmet against an opponent when both players are clearly outside the tackle box (an area extending from tackle to tackle and from three yards beyond the line of scrimmage to the offensive team’s end line). Incidental contact by the helmet of a runner or tackler against an opponent shall not be a foul.

Hundley was in the tackle box when he was hit by Watt.

The key is “passers,” not “quarterbacks,” are provided special protection. As Hundley was moving in the pocket and not in a “passing posture,” he was not a “passer.” Here’s the key part of Article 9:

In covering the passer position, Referees will be particularly alert to fouls in which defenders impermissibly use the helmet and/or facemask to hit the passer, or use hands, arms, or other parts of the body to hit the passer forcibly in the head or neck area (see also the other unnecessary roughness rules covering these subjects). A defensive player must not use his helmet against a passer who is in a defenseless posture—for example, (1) forcibly hitting the passer’s head or neck area with the helmet or facemask, even if the initial contact of the defender’s helmet or facemask is lower than the passer’s neck, and regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the passer by encircling or grasping him; or (2) lowering the head and making forcible contact with the top/crown or “hairline” parts of the helmet against any part of the passer’s body. This rule does not prohibit incidental contact by the mask or non-crown parts of the helmet in the course of a conventional tackle on a passer.

GB quarterback was a runner at time of tackle, MUTE point from a bunch of crybabies, including some here. ******* packer's coach is turning into Holgren the whale cryer after our Super Bowl with the seachickens,..........reaching for something,....anything to justify his loss. The STEELERS took everything that GB team had to offer and still came out victorious, hard pill to swallow for them.

MM decision to kick a 57 yard FG to give the Steelers half a field to work with to win the game is what he should justify his loss with. It was an ugly hit to watch and you don't want to see any QB take that kind of shot.

Helmet to helmet hasn't really gone far enough. I believe it was in the Saints game yesterday but the defender led with the crown of his helmet on a defenseless receiver. If the NFL is serious, they will institute targeting like college has. It is reviewable, which takes some of the guess work out of it. The dude absolutely would have been and should have been tossed from the Saints game. I missed the Watt hit.

Yet he was not removed for the big protocol of the NFL of concussions. But if you are going to cry about one play than it was a good one, just look at the officiating last night and enough is said.

Packers bitching about Watt's sack late in the game. He was a ball carrier and ducked his head into the tackle zone. This is getting too stupid.

Well, Helmet to helmet hits when the ball carrier is moving is tolerated a bit more inside the tackles. Its the late hit to a defenseless receiver, or a hit tot he QB;s head after he throws it that should get the flags.

He was not in the qb position, he was a runner, as such, it's incidental contact. Sorry, but when you tuck and run like a ***** ducking your head, you don't get the "throwing qb" protections anymore.

Joe

Im not tech savy to post a gif there is a perfect on on SBnation. Ball is down. He is acting as a runner and TJs forhead is up. If that is a foul tgen I guess every running back on all but a few plays is fouled. I would have prefered he had grabbed him going by but what is he supposed to do.

According to Goodell, the defender is always at fault, regardless of what the offensive player does to lower their helmet on contact.

Oh, and **** GOODELL!

According to Goodell, the defender is always at fault Especially if said player is of the STEELERS brand) regardless of what the offensive player does to lower their helmet on contact.

Just extending clarification for yaz,........ some here are a little slow to pick that up.

Salute the nation

it's "moot", not "mute"

According to our game thread, we were owed a call.....

It just turned out to be a "Non-call" that balanced things out

And.....That "Non-call" was an absolute gift.......

If Brady runs they should blast him. I don't care. Football is a physical sport.
