Heath Miller to retire

One of my favorite Steelers. And he had the class to do it before the draft so we can prepare accordingly.

Class act. I remember when we drafted him.seemed like yesterday. God bless buddy. Long live #83

Thank you Heath for all of your consistent play and positive contributions to the team. You will be missed...

Well, I'll retract my statement about TE not being a necessity this off-season.

Where would Miller rank among Steeler Tight Ends since the AFL-NFL merger? I say #1 overall.

Best wishes to Heath, classy guy too. Never complained about not getting the ball or making probowls but did whatever it took to help the team. A true Steeler and big shoes to fill for sure.

Prior to Heath, I thought Bruener was the best TE the Steelers ever had (don't remember much about the Grossman and other TEs of that era) and Eric Green's career here was too short . IMO, Miller's ability to both block and catch - and to do it for so many years - puts him at #1 for me.

Oh what a day....

Loved having 83 on the squad, he'll be missed.

The kid from USC may actually crack the roster now, unless we go TE in the first few rounds...and we should if we can't pick up a solid FA.

HEATH!!!

Greatest Steeler of his era on and off the field. His void will be felt in the loss of his incredible consistency. I am sorry to see him.leave but love the fact he is going a season too soon rather than a few seasons too late like a lot of great players.

He's the best TE the Steelers have ever had... I jumped for joy when he was drafted...pretty sad today, but he's given it everything he had...and it was SPECTACULAR

Mark Bruener was Good. Heath was GREAT!

Eric Greene was an exceptional tight end. Heath Miller was an absolutely amazing STEELER Tight End. We could NOT have had a better tight end for this team. I love that guy. Absolutely love him. You just don't replace a guy like Heath. Thanks for everything Big Money!

Thanks for everything Heath. I love the pic of D Wil and Harrison giving the "Come on Man" face to Heath.

I also think I am the only person here not surprised by this. Heath is still a great blocker but his mobility has been on a serious downturn for the past couple years already and he is very limited in his route running at this point. But what a great Steeler he has been on and off the field. I remember the day he was drafted like it was yesterday. Easily the most universally loved Steeler by the fans in past 20 years.

Here is what is out there.

Ladarius Green, TE, Chargers. Age: 26.
Ladarius Green was never able to officially pass Antonio Gates on the depth chart, but perhaps he was one season away from doing so. Green, who is highly athletic, performed well when starting for the suspended Gates at the beginning of 2015.

I like Green because he is just entering his prime. A lot of TEs on the list are too old. I think we should stick to what Philly used to do when it comes to almost all player signings, of both free agents and our own: do not sign anyone in their 30's other than rare exceptions.

Green can make plays, but I am not sure about his blocking. Anyone know?

Throw in Hines, and it almost feels like the end of an era.

it is.

Herman Edwards said on ESPN something along the lines of Heath, Troy, Hines, Ryan Clark... those guys signaled the end of the last Steeler era in their dedication and professionalism.

Wikipedia already has him as a " former American League Football Player" Damn he is only 33

Lucky to get him due to that sports hernia

seems like yesterday........... god I will miss him

even when his skills started to decline he found that opening and his blocking

and his professionalism

damnit mane

HEATHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

A very underrated TE for sure. I though could tell he was dropping passes and having to hold on blocks last year and I am sure he could tell his ability was slipping. Still for my money the best TE we have ever had.

One of the best to play his position. All around great player. He'll be sorely missed.

Once more for old times sake, Heeeeeeeeeeeeath!!!

Say it ain't so! Tough as nails, all about the team, always a pro on and off the field, great catcher, even greater blocker and who doesn't remember his yards after contact, the guy was a mauler.
can't believe he is leaving too, I guess I'm getting old.

Was just looking at the 2005 draft 1st round. Interesting names on that list, many stars. We sure as hell did well here. I remember that draft, and a lot of people including me ,I think, wanting Matt Jones the big receiver that Jacksonville took ahead of us. Holy **** was I wrong!

Saves us $4 million on our salary cap.

Better use the money wisely.

Very sorry to find out about this. Who knows? Might see him around Charlottesville occasionally now....

Thanks for everything, Heeaaattthhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was a bit of a punch to the gut when I learned about Heath's retirement. It wasn't like Ward or Polamalu, who you knew were in their final years with the team. While he slowed down quite a bit over the last two seasons, but I thought he had one more productive year left. Miller was a model player on the field and in the locker room and I will certainly miss watching him. I hope he enjoys his retirement from the NFL with his family and thank him for over a decade for being a model Pittsburgh Steeler.

Hard to say Heath was "slowing down".... he played so much for us:

Game Snaps/Offensive Snaps

1 73/73
2 48/57 (I think he got hurt)
3 60/63
4 60/63
5 56/57
6 57/57
7 56/57
8 73/75
9 84/85
10 66/66
BYE
11 30/80 (got hurt)
12 injured
13 69/71
14 78/80
15 60/61
16 54/56

That is a MACHINE for us on offense. And it's been like that (those types of participation numbers) for going on 5-6 seasons, maybe his whole career. No slow down at all with how much we asked of the guy. And he just went about his business.

Top notch professional. Top notch football player. Tough. That's pretty much the trifecta you always want.
