Pittsburgh Steelers' Round 1 2015 draft pick Bud Dupree is proving to be a quick study. Fellow linebacker Jarvis Jones said of him (via the Steelers' official website) earlier this month that, "He's gonna be a great player. He's very smart. He has all the physical attributes. He's getting great coaching from Coach [Joey] Porter so he's learning. He's a fast learner, too. The sky's the limit for him."

It wasn't just lip service. Dupree is already working with the first-team defense, reports ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, and Dupree himself is feeling more comfortable, saying to Fowler, "Everything is starting to click. [My goal is] to show them I know the plays and show them they can trust me."

I know its Uncle Jarvis but he is a fellow LB'er who you would think would be aware if another LB'er is picking things up quickly or not. I've been pimping this guy since the combine and think he's going to be a special player for us.

Its Bud Time!

Who is this "Bud Dupree" they are speaking of? Our first round OLB selection was "Bud Durpee". I don't care about this Dupree kid. I haven't heard a word about how Durpee is doing. Kid must be about as sharp pancake.

I don't know SteelBuck. Is that what Coach calls him, Durpee? I know Coach doesn't appear to be too high on our first round pick.

That's encouraging however this is pre-camp :” coachspeak “

Over the years I seen nice things said on rookies who looked good in mini camp. Troy Edwards, Scott, Sheilds. Jeremy Staat, and Huey Richardson come to mind.

The only one I never head “ Coach speak “was Jamain Stephens, but I could be wrong. The guy flat out could not play.

When I hear Gilbert or Beachum rave about Dupree, it will mean much more.

Here’s my thoughts on Dupree. Obviously he has a very good speed rush that worked in college, but he also lacked technique, and according to scouts was a tick slow to react.

If Durpee speed rush is enough, he can make an impact as a rookie in the NFL If not, he’ll learn how to disengage from blocks / learn a pass rush counter move and won't make much of an impact as a rookie.

With Jarvis Jones setting the bar low enough for a rookie free agent to jump over if given the chance ( J. Jones had but 1 sack his rookie season ), I expect Dupree to quickly be the better of the two. The question is just how good is he?! Let’s hope he’s not the next Vernon Ghoultson. AKA a marvelous athlete with better college production that could not adjust to the NFL. I see a Lamar Woodley type. Durpee is a bit better vs the run, but not quite as a good as a pass rusher. We shall see in time.

I suspect Bud will develop those very quickly, after all the guy coaching outside backers only has 98 sacks and he likely knows how to get it done. I suspect that the linebackers will improve a lot with 2 coaches instead of one, just from the aspect of being able to spend more time with each guy.

I'm with you on this one Wing. I like the fact that they split it between Joey taking the outside guys and Jerry O taking the inside backers. Much more efficient that way.

Coach, my point was the ability to pick up the plays and the defense. That you can do in shorts. The fact that the comments were made that Bud is a quick study and a fast learner was my point. Of course you are correct as far as the actual perfromance being a lot different in pads but I think from the mental aspect, wonderlic test aside, it sounds like Bud is doing fine with picking up the defense.

That appears to be the case. It is encouraging, but its not live action. The very athletic players usually look the best in non-contact drills with shorts.

I'm wondering if the lack of ability to diagnose the play was more due to his lack of confidence in his teammates.

Interesting point Superman, I also wonder if he was needing to wait till a fake was completed before reacting. Sometimes being assigned the wrong "keys" will make a player slow particularly if his reads were on backs instead of linemen. Typically linemen don't do much with fakes unlike backs and a faster read is normal on a lineman. It does not sound like the Kentucky program was a great one for developing players.

Coach, We have got to give the Steelers some credit for having the ability to scout these guys. Good points made above about the quality of the Kentucky defensive players and their ability to develop defensive players. I realize they play in the SEC and thats the finest competition in college football but Kentucky hasn't exactly been renowned for turning out NFL players. If Bud goes to Alabama or LSU we may never have had the opportunity to draft him. Much higher profile teams than the Kentucky's of the SEC. Nevertheless, this kid is going to be special. He has the physical attributes, I think he is more than capable of picking up this defense and he appears to have a great attitude. Whats not to like?

He didn't score a 27 on the cultural bias, suburban experience test ... AKA the Wonderlic. He also was "a tick" slow to diagnose plays. Never mind the fact that he didn't have a position coach at Kentucky; so only being a "tick" slow would actually seem to be pretty good since he was basically teaching himself the position. Same with his lack of pass rush moves ... you'd think he'd develop more of them with a proper position coach ... But that's no excuse or explanation; he should have taught himself more.

When I hear Gilbert or Beachum rave about Dupree, it will mean much more.

Ironically, both are on record raving about him.

Gilbert: "The young kid #48 is an absolute beast. First play he put his hands in my chest and I flew back five or six feet, landed right on my back. Next play he spun me around and I fell flat on my face. A few plays later I crouched down to get ready and he literally jumped right over me. I couldn't believe it, never seen nothing like that."

Beachum: "Dupree is going to be a star. On a pass play he got real small and somehow ran through my legs beneath me, next thing I know he's in the QB's face. Very next play, he faked an outside move, spun around and came back inside, had us linemen all crossed up. We all fell into a big pile, with Pouncey on the bottom, all five of us on top of each other in a heap! And Bud was in the backfield with his hands on the QB, flashing a huge grin. Nobody's gonna stop him."

Doing a little "literary photoshopping" Tibs? lol.

I was looking for the source and wondering why I never heard about this, thought could it have been on steeler nation radio when they were throwing hyperbole around with no regard for reality?

Gilbert's was believable, Beachum is when you know Tibs is working his magic!

Actually none of it sounded real, like the too good to be true saying it probably is.

Now thats some funny stuff Tibs. Made my afternoon on what has been a very boring day so far. What would have been cool if you had photoshoped a picture of the Bud in a superman outfit.

It's mid June, hot as hell out here, I'm dying....three more weeks till vacation, gotta have a little fun somehow... ;) ;)

Tibs,

don't pay them no nevermind.

Just tell them it came from ThinkProgress or Mother Jones or MSNBC and it's all good.

**** Dupree

How is Durpee doing?

The knock on Durpee is that his head is too big like Troy's head. At least according to Coach.

Tibs, where is here that you refer to. It gets so hot in Texas we have to go to hell just to cool off.

Here is in Budapest, Hungary. We're having a mini heat wave past week and a half, nothing, and I mean nothing like the heat in Texas. I got a brother in Katy, and I had a new understanding of 'damn, it's hot' when I visited him a few years back. ;)
