I think so. Mitchell was awful last year, with zero interceptions and just two passes broken up. Any starting safety was better at least statistically. Not only is he a loudmouth type, but he also has a salary cap number of 8.1 million in 2018.

The good news is if the Steelers cut him after June first, they save $5,000,000.00 in cap savings. After the draft and perhaps a free agent signed at safety, you can pretty much color Mitchell gone unless he agrees to play for significantly less than 8.1M next season to remain here.

It makes sense to let him go.

He could play for a Cracker Jacks prize and I wouldn't pay it.

Yeah, I know...I don't like him,

I don't like his play, I don't like his attitude and I don't like his show off antics on the field.

Here's what he's worth as far as I'm concerned

That would be nice. Although we know, with the Steelers, what the fans want is not always what they will do. But I just can't see the justification in keeping him in the lineup, especially at that price tag. And it's sad because I like him. He has a great attitude, he seems very passionate about the game and winning and our team. You want guys like that. But my goodness, he just sucks

Mitchell pretty much has to go if they are going to sign Bell. This is really a no-brainer.

My mantra about slow, hard hitting safeties in this nfl hasn't changed since Brent Alexander and Lee flowers spent several seasons being a few steps shy of making a play in every big game ever.... their ilk are done as contributing factors... draft guys who can cover and are sure tacklers...

I hope so.

Even if they don't sign BELL, Mitchell needs to go. NO room on our roster if we desire to get better. Just getting
rid of him makes our "D" better and there isn't room for argument of that. I think we fill that position with draft pick
starting rookie and I'm A-Ok with that as even is 'Hiccups" will be less than Mitchell's NON-play factor.3.

I don't care if guys talk smack as long as they can back it up. Mitchell is all hat and no cattle.

One can hope so but Tomlin loves him some mediocre old veterans, always has.

This isn’t the Colbert way, but the question is will he accept a pay cut. That could open the door for Mitchell to stay as a backup.

**** Ike, .........do you really want him as a back up???? His presents would hinder the actual play of a rookie. Tomlin wouldn't want to start a true rookie and thus you'd have your "back up" Mitchell in there "until the rook is ready" bullshit. I know back up depth is important but Mitchell is NOT very good and better depth at way less money could be had. Maybe I'm seeing a different Mitchell out there but I've never seen a player take such poor angle on BALL projection as Mitchell does. He runs himself out of the play then has to try and make back up the poor projectors play. Useless and how do you go a FULL season with Zero interceptions at his position, insane. So to surmise I would NOT persue anykind of deal / retainmeant but I would hold the door open and try to kick his butt on the way out.

To tell ya the truth Ike, I'd rather see them put someone like Brian Allen in there as apposed to keeping Mitchell. Allen has 'Safety' written all over him, he's fast, tall and can tackle. All things Mitchell lacks plus we have a plethora of CB's already.

All I’m saying is if he took a pay cut he would be a player who knows the system. A’la Will Gay. Veterans who can pass on experience in a system is important. Especially if you have a lot of young guys (which we do). Personally I don’t see Mitchell staying. He had a bad year, but was injured and tried to play through it. I would have rather had Mitchell of two years ago. But that is in the past.

Oh I agree Chip, Allen has the perfect look and the staff is very high on him. But let’s be realistic he’s only played DB for 4 years. He had no DB snaps last year. We will draft a FS or someone comparable. Try out Sutton too. I think Gay stays as a safety if Mitchell doesn’t.

Even as over the hill as William Gay is he would be an instant upgrade over the current Mike Mitchell. Ike I do get what you are saying but The way Mitchell played last year
was totally obtrusive. Injured or not (unless his vision or mind) doesn't excuse the ball projection recognition. I think that was his single most biggest problem. He was close
enough even after his correction on ball recognition that had he initially recognized he would have been in position to make a play. Not sure if you can teach recognition or not.
AGAIN I hear what you are saying and I guess if he took a HUGE pay cut to vet minimum which I think would be near the 1Mil mark, then yes. Your insight is great on the vet
mentoring the younger guys and hopefully our coach gets the right balance in there. This position is definitely a position that needs upgrade. Thank You
