Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant is in Houston working with renowned substance-abuse counselor John Lucas while serving his four-game suspension, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The Houston Chronicle first reported Bryant's treatment with Lucas, a former NBA player who overcame addiction and helps many prominent athletes with off-field issues.

Bryant, a talented receiver who caught eight touchdowns as a rookie, is missing four games after multiple failed marijuana tests. He can return to the practice and playing fields after the Steelers' Oct. 1 game against Baltimore. He'll be eligible for the Monday Night Football matchup with San Diego on Oct. 12.

ESPN reported last week that the Steelers agreed Bryant could train out of state for most of his suspension, assuming he stays in shape and gets his life in order.

While meeting with the media Tuesday, coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Bryant is not with the team but declined to discuss specifics. Shortly after Bryant's suspension in late August, Tomlin said Bryant has problems "bigger than football" and that he would support his player through the process. Bryant spoke with Tomlin before leaving town.

This is good news. It means he's taking this very seriously and should ease the minds of the FO and fans about a possible future suspension.

The 4 game upheld suspension means he tested positive for marijuana three times...kid might already be on his last legs in the NFL.

Good news indeed... I've come across a few ball players who have worked with John Lucas on the 'basketball development' side of his business and he is legit. One can only hope that Bryant realizes that he has an opportunity for redemption. Young man is extremely talented and it would be sad if he can't escape this habit. I think a lot has to do with who he surrounds himself with. I'm sure Lucas is giving him great relate-able advice, ultimately those choices will be left up to Martavis in the end. Good luck bro!

Taking it seriously is good but having an addiction that bad is not good. I would be very surprised if he gets past his rookie contract. Too risky. One slip up and you lose him for 10 games. I definitely wish him luck and hope he can stay away from the stuff.

Lucas worked with the DB for Arizona out of LSU iirc. The "Honey Badger" was famous for not giving a **** in college; multiple suspensions for marijuana. It got so bad for him that he was released from the LSU squad. As far as I know the kid has not been suspended while in the NFL. Hell, I'd be happy if Lucas did nothing more than get the kid to stop smoking until his time in the program is up and then show him how to "cycle" so that he doesn't get caught.

NOT me, I want the kid to address his addiction. His employer says NO and that is what he needs to abid by. Leave the cheating for t*mmy b*y and the cheatriots. Bryant just needs guidence and solid consistency in his life. He needs to make some tough choices as to friends / direction / importance / career. Although we, as fans, think he has a golden job / ability, he thinks of it as a job and after woprk, wants a (instead of beer, joint). His big choice is have it now, or wait till after his career.........

Salute the nation

I pray he gets the help he needs...and this is not just because he's a Steeler - it's because it's the right thing to hope for...

This probably wont be popular, but the nfl drug policy is a joke. weed is no worse than alcohol, and the fact that these players can be suspended for taking over the counter drugs most of us wouldn't give a second thought about giving to our kids is laughable. This is just another way for the league to get some of their money back, and influence the outcome of some games. So for me as long as it was just weed; I don't look at Bryant as having a drug problem. Bryant is just someone that likes to smoke grass, no different than 90% of the owners that like to drink alcohol.

As far as Bryant taking the right steps, Yes he is do to the fact that he is trying to save his career, but in my eyes not because he has a drug problem. (unless it's more than weed)

It's almost like he was reading the DHB thread and trade discussion fans were saying about him. Great news for him, and I really hope it sinks in.

Sometimes you just have to fall down. Hope he gets his stuff together.

Don't piss away a dream millions have for something you can do after your career is over. I'm pulling for the guy. He only makes the offense better.

I would love nothing more than to have my crow with a side of crow. Please, Martavis, serve it up. I'm rooting for you. Honestly, I am. I think it's a long, difficult road, but I would LOVE for you to make it.

If you disregard the fun factor, it's not that difficult to not get high.

I get it can be a problem....I myself had to make a choice to stop liquor or risk not having a job. Early twenties, parties every night and going into work looking like I just left the bar. Stopped the liquor and only have a beer on Friday or Saturday night and definitely none if I have work the next morning. Twenty-Five years later, things are fine. All about growing up and taking responsibility.

I don't know why they make up stuff in these articles. There is a specter in what is being said that he is not allowed to train with the Steelers. True. Nor is any suspended player to my knowledge once they are serving their suspension. But lets not let facts get in the way of a good story.

I agree the player is stupid, but they just gotta stop testing for Weed. It is dumb. Bell, sure. He was driving high and could have hurt someone. But I'm willing to bet that many of the pain medications prescribed to players by team physicians cause way more problems then weed.

Kind of concerning to see that this even merited a substance abuse program. Its weed, stop smoking it and you're fine. Once you are done playing you can smoke as much weed as you want. Some of these guys just don't get it. This isn't a personal rant against Bryant, but man they gotta make better decisions with their livelihoods at stake.

True, but the Steelers don't have to allow him to train OUT of the state if they don't want to. But lets not let reading and comprehension get in the way of a good rant on facts...

I can understand the difficulties that young people might have with abstaining. It makes life awesomer.

Please explain your point. I'm saying he isn't being punished by the Steelers by banishing him from the building/ city or state.
ESPN reported last week that the Steelers agreed Bryant could train out of state for most of his suspension, assuming he stays in shape and gets his life in order.
He is likely training out of State because that might be where his counselor is located or perhaps he has a support system there. He played and was a huge part of the preseason games even after his suspension was made public. The team is standing by him, its just not really written that way.

It is exactly written that way. I don't know where you are pulling your argument from.

While meeting with the media Tuesday, coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Bryant is not with the team but declined to discuss specifics. again from the article, Tomlin standing by his player, but doesn't go into specifics.
