I am rooting for the Cardinals to win the Super Bowl. Not for any love of the Cardinals, but for local reasons.

In 1925, the Pottsville Maroons won the NFL title on the field, but due to some stupid NFL rules at the time, were stripped of the title and it was given to the Cardinals.

Since the Cardinals only have one other title ('47), they have insisted on holding on to the '25 one, even though the NFL has been petitioned by many people, including Dan Rooney and Jeff Lurie, and even though they were beaten soundly by Pottsville.

Here is hoping they win the Super Bowl and maybe will consider allowing the '25 title to go back where it belongs.

If you ever want a good read, the book "The Breaker Boys" is about that '25 Pottsville team. If this year's Steeler team had a Tony Latone or Frankie Racis, they'd still be playing.

I've only heard bits and pieces of that story. Can anyone tell me a little more detail as to the rule(s) as to what made them forfeit??? Thanks in advance

In 1925, the Pottsville Maroons, a football team from the heart of Pennsylvania coal country, joined the fledgling National Football League.
Built by an eccentric owner, molded by a visionary coach and loaded with hardscrabble miners, college All Americans and the 'sky's the limit' ethos of the Roaring Twenties, the Maroons did the unthinkable and dominated the NFL in their rookie season. (Their improbable rise was chronicled each week in the local paper by a rookie Pottsville sportswriter named John O'Hara.) Little Pottsville outscored its first seven opponents 162-6. The boys so thoroughly pummeled one opponent, angry fans shot up their train car as the Maroons rode out of town. In the final game of that first season the Maroons traveled to the Midwest to face the league-leading Chicago Cardinals in what was viewed as the championship game for 1925. The Maroons overcame a Windy City snowstorm and an injury to their best player to defeat the Cardinals 21-7.

Claiming the upstart Maroons had violated the territory of another franchise by playing Notre Dame in Philadelphia, the NFL suspended Pottsville and awarded the 1925 NFL championship to the Chicago Cardinals. The Cardinals refused to accept the bogus title and the 1925 crown was never officially awarded. For more than 80 years, fans of the Pottsville Maroons-the team Red Grange said was the "most ferocious" he ever faced-have fought to have the 1925 title returned to its rightful owners.

That's from the team site

Yea, I ain't that old!

Something having to do with territory rights. In those days there was no title game, but Pottsville went out to Chicago and beat the Cardinals in a snowstorm to win it with the best record. After that game, Pottsville was in demand, and a game was set up between Pottsville and some College All-Stars, lead by the 4 Horseman from Notre Dame. The game was to be played in Shibe Park, in the territory of the Frankfort Yellow Jackets. The Frankfort owner hated Doc Streigel, the Pottsville owner, because Steigel raided a few of his players before the season. So the Frankfurt owner pushed the league to invoke the territory rights and forbid Pottsville to play the game. They did anyway, as the payday for those guys was more important in those days than the championship of a fledgling league. The league then stripped Pottsville of the title.

If Pottsville would have lost to Chicago, Chicago would have played the All-Stars, and if other things would have panned out, Frankfort would have played them, so some others were pissed they missed out on the payday.

In the spirit of hypocrisy, in 2008 when the Steelers played the Cardinals, we were all more of the mindset, 'Well, we waited this long, we can wait a little longer."

I'm pulling for the Cards cause of all the one time Steelers on their staff: Arians, Tom Moore, Harold Goodwin, Amos Jones, Brentson Buckner, Larry Foote, even the much maligned Larry Z. And I like Larry Fitz.

Its Heinz Field West. They are the Pittsburgh Steelers Junior lol. That and Arizona is my home state. Born in San Manuel in 1971. 1st person in my immediate family line on both sides born outside of Aliquippa.

I'd like to see the Cards get in but they still have to beat Carolina.
And then there's that creepy feeling that somehow Peyton is going to be getting a ring before he retires.
If the Belichick Bradys are on the shorter end of a tilt in the officiating, it's a lock. You know, kind of like how the refs obviously went deaf, dumb and blind last week after halftime.

Id like to see Carson get a ring and be able to flip the bird East right at Cinci.

Im rooting for Carolina, as i used to live down there.

Denver would be my second choice.

Arizona? Id take them over the Cheatri*ts , but i know a couple Cards fans who STILL want to argue that Ben to Stonio wasn't a catch! They are almost as whiney as seachicken fans.

I said before and I'll say again: Carson Palmer is still ethnically a Bengal, so **** the Cards.

Go Cam!

I think that this would make it that much sweeter. Now, not only have the bungholes not won a playoff game in forever, but their "former" franchise qb wins the ******* super bowl before their current one even wins a playoff game. Not to mention the way those pricks acted after their meltdown even 2 weeks after it had happened. **** the bungles.

If not for BA, I'd be rooting hard for Larry Fitzgerald and the Cardinals.

Any team but the cheaters.

I'm not faulting Palmer for being a bungle. That's 3 knee replacements ago...

currently I have three favorite teams still in the playoffs.......... ANY POTENTIAL cheatriots BEATER !!!!!!!

Make no mistake, the PITTSBURGH STEELERS are my number ONE all time favorite team for my whole life !!!!!!!!!!

Cardinals and Donkeys today with really either next week. I'd probably pull for the Cards.

Id like to see manning get another ring so he can retire, but if anyone deserves a ring its fitzgerald. I do not see the broncos beating the pats though. The Cards have a 50/50 shot depending on Palmer.

Have always felt Carson Palmer was overrated, but would love to see Larry Fitzgerald get a ring. Pitt alum and seems like an all around good guy and great player.

My son has been a big Cam Newton fan since he was a college player, so I'd be ok with them too.

Have no strong feelings one way or the other about Denver.

Really I'm just rooting for Anyone But Patriots. GO ABP!

Just saw this stat this week, but Fitzgerald has 24 drops in his 12-year career including the postseason! Pretty incredible for a guy with over 1,000 receptions and one who played with some pretty awful quarterbacks over the years.

I am rooting for whatever NFC team gets there. Peyton is a good dude, but not a champion. His one ring was because of a very dominant defense, not because of his amazing play. He is typically not that impressive in championship games.

Larry Fitzgerald is a class act and deserves a ring. I think about the story he told about a phone call he had with Hines Ward. It went something like, "you already had a ring. Now you have two rings. Man! All I want is to get one. Your couldn't just let me get one too?". He was joking about the loss in XL, but Hines has been close to him for a long time and I see similar play from 11 this year. If it's at the expense of Brady or Peyton? I say let's get Larry a ring.

If Carolina gets in, then I'm ok with that too. Just whatever happens don't let that ***** Tommy "the raging douchebag" Br*dy win another. ******* world just might stop rotating if that happens.

NFC until February 8th.

1 versus 2 in both conferences.....first time in 10 years that its happened....my question to the group. Are these the four best four teams in the league ?
