Gnashing of teeth - Bell/Steelers close on contract?

Was out working late last night and listening to Paul Zeiss on 93.7. He comes on at midnight when there's a Pirates game on. Zeiss says there is no way they are close to a long-term deal.

My thought too when I saw the interview. PR hype, but I hope I'm wrong.

If he compromises for the right price, great, it not, see ya.

If anyone is getting close I think it would be Bell backing down on his demands a little. It's also entirely possible that Bell is FOS.

I agree with Zeise. It sounded like Bell just wanted to get some positive PR.

I think Bell can clearly see that he will NOT get this type of contract on the open market if he hits UFA. He knows his best chance to get max value is through a long term contract with the Steelers. At his age he will get a nice deal with Year 1 and Year 2 money coming in high but he would likely be a cap cut in Year 3 with his age and miles creeping upward.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. For the Steelers It's Damn If You...Damn If You Don't Situation! Bell is a key player to their sucess for winning another SB....and it seems the Steelers aren't prepared to fill his spot with the current roster. However.... does the FO want to break the bank and jeopordize the future salary cap by agreeing to Bell's demands? Damn tough situation and it seems Bell has the upper hand IMHO.

How so? We have him for at least this coming season. We know that. The Steelers have given him an offer...Bell can take it or leave it. How does this give Bell the upper hand?

It doesn't"t..........BELL has no upper hand in this. He completed is first and only full season. Sure the STEELERS would love to have him signed to a long term deal but they are showing, with their patience, that that long term deal needs to bear affordable for them, not Mr. Bell. Our front office has been here before and show it by not airing it out in public.....unlike the second party involved.

Bell saying anything is nothing more than window dressing for his supporters, who still believe in his demands.

That doesn’t happen to be me though. I would have moved him right before the draft. The Steelers do not become the Browns without Bell.

So how would they move him right before the draft exactly? This has been over 1000 times. Bell isn't signed. We can't do anything with him except pull the tag offer from him. And then we lose any comp pick next year. That said I would have just moved on from him this year. Made him our best offer take it or leave it. Would we be a weaker team? Most likely but the whole drama aspect would have been cut out. Minus Bryant a bunch of the me first guys would be gone.

The STEELERS are doing what they think is right by keeping him this season and getting COMP. pick. As of the circumstances today I'd say this is his last year here. Where will he end up...................where ever someone can pay him. Is that the contenders such as cheatriotvill / Eagles / Dallas / insert name........ Most of those teams are similar to the STEELERS and probably wouldn't pony up the big bucks long term for a well used RB. Obscurity is where he will end up and once off the STEELERS team then I wouldn't care either way.

I would not offer anymore than the Steelers offered last year and if he turns it down, then move on after the 2018 season.
