Ben Roethlisberger and Cam Newton are two of the biggest quarterbacks in the NFL.

Both are 6-5 and about 250 pounds. Since the Carolina Panthers selected Newton with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, he has been sacked 201 times. Roethlisberger, the 11th overall pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2004 draft, has been sacked 450 times over his career, including 176 sacks since 2011.

Newton doesn't feel like he's getting the protection from officials that other quarterbacks receive. Newton said he doesn't "feel safe" on the field anymore, especially after two helmet-to-helmet hits in the season opener against the Denver Broncos were not flagged and Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell fell into Newton's knees in Sunday's Week 8 game at Bank of America Stadium. Newton's right knee bent awkwardly, but no penalty was called on Campbell.

While Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Newton is correct that the quarterback doesn't get the calls he should, Steelers offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert disagrees.

"Ben gets hit more than anybody in the league, and he never complains. C'mon, man. This is the game of football," Gilbert said, via ESPN.com. "If you're out there and you're scared to take a shot, then don't be out there, especially if you're a running quarterback. [Defenses] are going to take shots at you. Just the way, his style of playing football, how he celebrates, I guess he gives the guys a chip, like let's go hit the reigning NFL MVP.

"When he's running over people, he's going to stand right up and he's going to celebrate," Gilbert added. "This is the game of football. I'm sure there are cornerbacks or linebackers, whoever he's running over, the safeties, they aren't complaining about getting run over or getting crowned, facemask to facemask with the quarterback from a guy his size. Of course, guys are going to take shots ... I don't think anybody is trying to purposefully hurt him, but you're going to get those extra hits, especially against such a great player."

Newton missed Carolina's Monday night loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 10 because of a concussion suffered a week earlier against the Atlanta Falcons. He was injured while hit at the goal line while running in a two-point conversion. It was another helmet-to-helmet hit that went unflagged.

"If you don't like it, then tell the coach or the coordinator to change the whole game plan," Gilbert said. "Try to do something to protect you, because back a couple of years ago, when Ben was getting hit a lot, we had to change our offense a little bit, put in a little extra protection to help him stay upright because he is the franchise player."

Gilbert is spot on, but still....all the officials need to do is officiate the rules. There are some QB's who get preferential treatment. Peyton was one of them. Brady of course, gets pref treatment. He's 6'5" 230 so what's the difference. But if a rule is broken, doesn't matter what height/weight a person is, call the foul if they are worried about player injuries.

I can understand newton's frustration, but what really rubbed me the wrong way, was how he said he'd be "talking to roger goodell" about it, at his press conference; he was stupid to say that out loud in front of cameras and mics.

That brings to question, as many have stated, the intelligence of Cam Newton. Is he really that low end to think Roger will listen yet do something about it???? When a player flaunts in your face antics especially when winning, your dang right that will piss a few players off. Stop me if you don't want me flaunting. WELL guess what Cammy, they are stopping you you fool.!!!!!!

Gilbert is saying it spot on !!!!!

living here in Carolina, you sure get tired of Newton crying the blues. He will never be a leader as other QB's in this league. Cam has no problem trying to show up the defenses but when he gets hit is oh poor me. The league will go to there knees to listen to this guy but how many other QB's have been hit and no crying, well except Tommy Boy and maybe Hairball, and the league does nothing. Hate to say it but is fun watching hockey, no crying, no spending ever other play talking about all the negative crap. I sometimes miss the old football.

Gold.

Newton is a bit overrated. He has 8 TD
s and 6 INT's this year. He's the 25th rated passer in the NFL.

Maybe the ref's don't like him or Ben and treat them a bit differently than others but at least Ben isn't a whiner about calls. No one likes whiner. Once you get that label, it sticks with you.

I think Newton's leadership has diminished ever since he pulled him out-out of going for a fumble.

It would not surprise me if " Superman " has a Vince Young like breakdown as his team is 2-5, and he likes to talk trash. Sooner or later, his ego will take a beating, and I think he can't take that.

I used to semi-defend him, but not so much anymore. I thought too much was made about his post-game Super Bowl PC. But he continues to be a big baby. His quote about "not feeling safe out there" was pathetic. He's trying to use rhetoric that's been created to influence the sheep out there. Should DHS get involved since he doesn't feel "safe?" What crap.

And, of course, he was our 1st round draft pick in fantasy. Good thing I had the vision to take Dak in the last round. Funny how someone so cocky, demonstrative and arrogant when things are going good, turns into a pouting ***** when things are tough.

Brady never does antics like the Superman thing; all Tom does is spike the ball. Big deal. No comparison whatsoever.

Like when he scored on the Steelers and taunted the crowd after spiking the ball?

As Ark said a rule is a rule and if its a flag for hitting a small guy like Brees its flag for hitting a big physical guy like Ben or Cam. I'd just get rid of the rule and tell them all to play the game its a contact sport,

I'm not hating on Cam for voicing it. I mean he was knocked silly the first game of the season and no flags. Gilbert imho shouldn't speak out on something that his own QB should of done long ago. Just because it happens to other QBs doesn't make it right.

Hopefully this brings more yellow laundry, when it comes to Ben!

GIlbert is half right

I generally agree with his sentiment. But it doesn't address the inconsistency. Every other QB besides Cam and Ben are getting those calls. If no one got the calls, then sure he should just quit bitching. But it's the inconsistency that is the problem for me, not the fact that he is getting hit

Strange Gilbert would speak out like this, but Cam started at Florida and got kicked out of school for cheating on a test and stealing a laptop. I wonder if Gilbert has some bad blood with him.

Brady**** is one of the few dudes I'd like to see get knocked into next year. That entire group has been the biggest bunch of sore winner **** you in your face asshats in the league. I've never forgot some of the taunting they did in our last afccg against them. They may as well put a skirt on Brady because nobody can hit him. He's just a spoiled little ***** nobody likes.

Sorry but there is a very intelligent, well articulated commen sense poster here on this message board that would argue to this. ONLY problem is his mouth is so full of "t*mmy b*y" stuff.

T*mmy b*y is the single most individual who has benefitted from the cheating. Rumor has his college days as an intermerrell basketball player, he went way out of his way to get even with a guy. THIS, a game of non-competitive basketball, he totally takes out a guy intentionally. Gives you an idea as to what lengths t*mmy b*y will go to. For a team that is the absolutely best, how many HOFer's will be named off that team???
in case you didn't know my stance

I agree that Cam is whining. Ben doesn't whine, but he does tend to over exaggerate his injuries. Neither get calls, and it's unfortunate that they don't. Who says bigger QBs or QBs who are mobile don't deserve the same protection as the smaller pocket passers? It's another reason why the NFL is losing fans. Flacco, Ben, and Cam don't get those calls. Brady ALWAYS does.

Also I don't wish what happened to Vince Young on ANYONE. It wasn't football that caused his problems. It was his problems that removed him from football. The guy wanted to kill himself, and it wasn't because he lost games. The dude had a serious chemical imbalance, and nearly killed himself because of it. Being someone who has lost family and friends to this type of struggle, I have very little tolerance for those who think it is a joke, or think those are weak minded because you want to kill yourself. You have no understanding of what it is like to live with a mental disorder, because being mentally healthy is taken for granted.

Regardless of what a ***** Newton has made himself look like, he'll begin to get those "flags". He is an *** but the attention ***** aspect will work for him.

Maybe not on those runs but if he's touched in the pocket, Roger's zebras will be primed and loaded.

Yep, the NFL is losing me and I'm completely moving towards hockey. There really isn't the whining and flamboyant "look at me" attitude. Men are playing hockey, and they face the same risks (in some cases worse) as football players. Does anyone honestly think CTE isn't a risk from playing hockey? But the bias, the speech out of both sides of the league's mouth, the allowed cheating, the rules, etc. etc. are all turning me away from Football. If only hockey would market itself a bit better than now it could be more of a public competition for viewership.
