Pretty good article....

Plan for the Offseason

1. Convince Ben Roethlisberger not to retire

During a local sports radio interview, Roethlisberger didn’t commit to returning to the team in 2017. Whether he truly means it or not, this is something the Steelers need to take seriously. Roethlisberger is still at least a top-10 quarterback, and without him they are not close to a contender. So, the Steelers GM Kevin Colbert needs to do whatever it takes to bring Roethlisberger back.

2. Get Bryant the help he needs to conquer his drug problems

The Steelers, like any other professional sports franchise, have the resources to give people who have drug issues help. So, regardless of how important of a player Bryant is, this should be done because it is the right thing to do. But, it is also important because when Bryant is on the field he is a force of nature. He is talented enough to single-handedly swing the Steelers’ ability to win a lwoB repuS. The last thing the Steelers want is for Bryant to turn into another Justin Blackmon or Josh Gordon where the talent gets wasted by the drug problem.

3. Fire defensive coordinator Keith Butler

The Patriots will continue to be the team the Steelers will have get past to achieve the goal of winning a lwoB repuS. Matching the Patriots starts with firing Butler because it is obvious at this point that Brady knows exactly how to attack that zone defense. With Butler unwilling to adjust, they need to find a new coordinator with a different scheme to make things more difficult for Brady. While it may make them more vulnerable against other teams, all that matters is being able to counter Brady as well as possible, and not allowing him to pick apart their zone coverage.

4. Re-sign Bell, James Harrison, and Lawrence Timmons

With $43 million in projected cap space, they easily have enough to sign all of these players. Bell is a no-brainer with his unbelievable talent in the running game and passing game which makes him arguably the best back in football.
Harrison, at age 38, had an amazing season recording five sacks, and earned a PFF grade of 86.7/100, which slotted him as the 11th best edge defender in football according to PFF. With his pass rush ability and veteran presence, it would be good idea to sign him to a one-year contract.
Timmons has been a solid middle linebacker for the Steelers for 10 seasons. He still has the ability to cover ground in the pass game and make plays in run defense at age 30. He has been the definition of reliable as well, as he has only missed two games in his 10-year career.

5. Make a strong push for Melvin Ingram in free agency

The Steelers had a solid pass rush last season led by Harrison, Bud Dupree, and Ryan Shazier, and ranked ninth in the league in sacks with 38. But, if they are able to add an impact pass rusher like Ingram, it could result in Pittsburgh having one of the best pass rushes in in the NFL. Ingram had eight sacks last season, and was ranked as the sixth best edge defender by PFF. Signing Ingram, who is only 27 years old, could provide the long term replacement for James Harrison, and it could also allow the Steelers to depend less on Harrison to produce at a high level in 2017. If you add Ingram to the pass rushing group of Harrison, Dupree, Shazier, and a healthy Cameron Heyward, it would make the Steelers’ pass rush scary for opposing offenses.

The Steelers took a step in the right direction this season, advancing to the AFC title game. However, if the Steelers want to make that jump past the Patriots, they need to nail many critical decisions this off-season. If they can address the five listed issues above, they will have a real chance to bring home their seventh Lombardi trophy in 2017.

Someone thinks like me, add a upgrade at CB and we are really talking.

And if they did that, they could draft a TE in 1 if desired.

How about adding Cordarelle Patterson? All pro kick returner with the potential to be our #2 receiver if MB effs up again.

Thanks a for posting and very right on artickle. CMT isn't going anywhere but I STRONGLY want Butler gone. When he was promoted I felt all he was was an extention of the DL zone defense. I wanted total change at that time. I truely hope Tombert goes this direction. If not, then look for another L-O-N-G season with little fruit at the end.

I don't think its entirely MT's decision. Butler was kept around by ownership to succeed LeBeau, they would have to be the ones to see the light about how done this defense is. The *pats could've dusted off their 20012 playbook and still hung 40 points on this defense. They cleared out their old, tired, and done defensive players, now its time to do the same with the defensive coordinator and the scheme.

Wait, Timmons is strong in pass coverage? HUH? I know he had a couple amazing INTs, and he's a smart player, but overall he has been a real liability in pass coverage. Now, I don't think that's how he should be used, but if we're going to continue to have ILBs cover TEs and slot receivers, Timmons has to go.

I'm so frustrated by that game...

So so frustrated. I expect Ben is still having nightmares and will for awhile.

Haven't gone back and watched the tape of the game yet, doubt I will. To me it was 100% bad gameplan that lost v NE. They executed against a flawed defensive scheme. Next time we face them they will have more weapons than they have now with Gronk back and probably upgraded receivers. This was our shot to beat them while they were supposed to be down and they thumped us. Hopefully they watch the tape and see that not blitzing and playing zone are not recipes for beating Tom Brady. I imagine we will have better weapons for Ben next time as well and hopefully a healthy Bell at RB

I'd be okay with many of those moves. They fail to mention the big contract (and whether to do it) for Antonio Brown.

You really have to take these "projected salary cap room" articles carefully. They don't tell you how many roster spots that $43 million has to fill nor do they tell you the changes likely to happen for existing contracts on the books for 2017.

If we sign the likes of Bell, Timmons, Brown AND Ingram to new contracts, we probably could fit it into 2017 (what with the way big signing bonuses can be spread out) but 2018 and 2019 could get ugly quick.

It also fails to put a number on Melvin Ingram. Last off-season, the Giants set the bar in free agency for a pass rusher in Olivier Vernon. He is very comparable to Mark Ingram and got a 5-year, $85 million contract with $40 million guaranteed. That would make him our highest paid defensive player, #1 on the pecking order in the locker room, which the Steelers traditional do not like to do. This past season Timmons and Heyward for #1/#2 on the pecking order of contracts on the defense. And they (for the most part) were the leaders.

Not saying it can't be done. Not saying it wouldn't make us a better team in 2017. But it's rocking the boat for sure. If it doesn't work, it would be very hard to correct in 2018.

Ingram is probably going to get franchise tagged. This isn't Madden football, the Steelers aren't likely to go out and sign a top end free agent.

Agreed. It's pretty far fetched.

Hire some coch that can coach these defensive backs, has been no improvement since preseason.

As far as #3 goes, Tomlin is just as responsible as Butler. Letting Harrison and Dupree get after the QB with Timmons and Shazier in coverage worked, for the most part, in our season ending win streak. Why change it? I guess they thought by dropping the OLB's and blitzing the ILB's they could catch the cheatri*ts off guard up the middle. Should have been OBVIOUS by the end of the 1st quarter that it wasn't working. Once again, no adjustments made. Pathetic.

Dupree just needed to hit Brady ONCE like he hit Moore. Just ONCE and it would have been a totally different game.

If anyone gets anywhere near Brady's knees he gets nervous as **** - but no. Our dumbass coaches have the big uglies running around 10 and 15 yards deep while the ******* fleas are catching 7 and 8 yard passes and making every defender on the field react to them.

Just make me want to hit somebody with a bag of hammers.

Thinking outside the box here. There is one player I would trade AB for, and that is Vonn Miller.

Recall Ben promising Bettis if he sicks around one more year he'll take him to the Super Bowl.

Someone needs to make that promise to Ben....those receivers promising to catch the ball next year would be nice.

Wig, two things...........................

1.). If Dupree had hit t*mmy b*y in this manner they would still be picking up the broken pieces which brings me to point #

2.). Bud Dupree would still be under lock down in one of those secret JAIL's the NFL has.

PS A bag of hammers,................YES

Dupree / Heyward / Grave Digger / Tuit / Miller (random order). ******* scary & AB would be long gone. I like AB but would take this deal in a faster than FLASH.

Yes, Von Miller would look great in black & gold, running around the defensive backfield covering receivers...

The players we have can play, the scheme blows monkeys balls. And AB is as important to this offense as Ben, I wouldn't trade him, just tell the coach to manage his f'n players. AB's video issue is as much Tomlin's fault as it was AB's. That sort of **** can only happen in an undisciplined locked room, for that you blame the head coach.

6. See if Richard Sherman would like a chance to get another ring for a reasonable price.
