Gerry Dulac ...Jarvis Jones every bit a draft bust.

This could go in a couple of threads.
I think Tombert has fallen into the trap of drafting by measurables instead of looking for ballers. That can work on offense, less so on defense IMO. For defense you need to look for ballers. For example last year I said they should have drafted Aaron Donald, DL from Pitt. Now you could say it's a moot point because Donald was taken before the Steelers picked, but besides having a long-time allergy to Pitt players, everyone said he's too small and too short to play DE in a 3-4 and I know damn well they wouldn't have taken him anyway. Donald ends up being Defensive Rookie of the Year. Baller. Shazier may end up being good but you can't tell me we're better off with him than Donald.

Although I don't completely disagree with the premise, Jarvis Jones is not a good example of what you are asserting. His measurables as demonstrated leading up to the draft were horrific, but his production at Georgia seemed to indicate he was a baller. Protected by a bevy of talent on the Bulldog defense, he essentially ran free and made a ton of plays.
 
So, if Jarvis is a bust - and he showed "some flashes" before he got hurt last year (oh, let's not forget how long it's supposed to take a rookie to 'feel comfortable' in Coach LeBeau's defense)---what label is Dulac going to put on Landry Jones???

I mean they both are Jones', right???

Moates might also be able to translate into an outside backer in a 4-3.

Right now I would be tempted to move Harrison to the middle spot in a 4-3 and Timmons to the outside with Shazier at the other outside spot. Spence can back up outside spot, Williams the middle. And Jones would be put on a bus going out of town.

We can hope that Butler's D will be easier for rookies and young guys to play in. It better be because there's going to be a lot of rookies and young guys starting. At least there better be.

I don't know who was talking about Butler's schemes compared to Lebeau's today on local radio, but they said to expect the same type of defense. Maybe they dumb it down so it's not so complicated, but the premise will be the same with disguising blitzes and whatnot.

I hope your right. Because having a weak secondary doesn't go well with no pass rush.

Lets pray Shazier and Jones both stay healthy and we can finally see what the future is going to look like.

Shazier a S in a 46 would be better then deebo at MLB
 
Way too early to give up on Jarvis. I'm not seeing how unathletic he is, etc. It's easy for fans to gang up on a player...geez. I think he's shown promise in spurts. Want to see what he can do this year, before I go digging his grave...

This is all we can really do. No matter what anyone of us thinks of him, we have to give him the benefit of the doubt. There is a lot of pressure for him to step up and be the man. All the venom toward him will either be warranted or swallowed with the sour grapes.

We had like 33 sacks or some ****....I dont think the disguising worked.

18th overall defense. Whether disguising worked or not, we didn't have the talent to pull it off so other teams didn't give a **** and did what they wanted to do. And this coming year the D may well be even worse. Gonna be a dumpster fire I think.

He sucked as an outside linebacker in a 4-3, If used in the middle as a run stopper / rusher he would be much better. That activity would suit his speed and power more than him trying to chase tight ends, he could also cover the short zone in the middle. I agree with you that if the steelers went to a 4-3 he would not be in his best position on the outside.

Uncle Jarvis was a stats guy. His measureables were actually the concern. I'm not concerned with Shazier play I just think he might be soft with injuries. Jarvis is a bust. I don't need to see another season to say that. He gets locked on routinely. If Shazier busts they are ******. Otherwise pretend Bell was the first rounder and Uncle Jarvis was a project second rounder that didn't work out. You will feel better.

According to profootballfocus.com, Harrison was the NFL's ninth-rated outside backer in playing about 37 percent of the plays. The Bengals liked having him and he helped, but at times the fit was tentative. Known as a superb pass rusher, Harrison only rushed 142 times, the same amount of his run snaps and PFF ranked him fourth in the NFL against the run.

Although I think Deebo would DESTROY people as a MLB in a 4-3, it only sets us backwards. Our weak link is at OLB and James will take the sting out for a year. After that...we better have options lined up.

I'm thinking they will let Jones walk when his contract is up, kinda like Worilds minus the tag year.
Still doesn't answer Tombert's puzzling inability to draft defensive players though.

I wish they could find someone who wanted to trade his worthless *** for a draft pick, right now a third would be great.

as with Michael Sam...the 49ers are hurting for LBs right now.
if we wanted to move him, now is the time.

Best advice anyone could give to Jarvis Jones right now - go find James Harrison and ask if you you can work out with him this offseason. Rent an apartment as close to his house as you can find. Go to the gym with him every single day. Go to lunch and dinner with him as often as he will permit. Move into his basement for a few months if James will allow it. Mirror everything James Harrison does. Ask him questions. Ask James to make you into a second version of himself.

James Harrison didn't have any of the measureables coming out of Kent State. He made himself into the player he became through long hours of hard work. Jarvis Jones can't make himself much faster or quicker. But he can make himself much stronger, much smarter on the field and develop better pass rushing moves. There is no OLB in recent memory who made more of himself with what he had than James Harrison. There is no better example for Jarvis Jones.

The only question really is - does he want to improve?
