Game Balls, Game Goats & FU's...........week 4 vs Vikings.....

I get sick of criticizing Tomlin, but you’re 100% right

On top of that it looked like Rodgers bullied Tomlin into going for it in 4th down from the 3 yard line. On top of that it was a stupid play call to run it on 4th down from the 3 yard line-way too hard to convert. If you’re going to go on 4th down from the 3 yard like put it in Rodgers hands.

Tomlin just looks lost and inept in so many situations where he should be a difference maker in a positive way

I wonder what Rodgers thinks of Tomlin as a head coach now 4 games in…the look on his face when he glares at the sideline looks like he’s thinking wtf are we doing and is about to lose his mind over the play calling and decision making
I still say 5 games before Rodgers blows up

- I hope Tomlin learned something from the playcall debacle on 4th down. A FG secures a 2 TD lead, a pass attempt to your big receivers gives you the chance to close out the game, but a run with 3 or more yards to go secures you a heart attack until the final whistle.
A field goal secures a 13-point lead. But it does force the other team to score 2 touchdowns (rather than just 10 points), which would have been the most optimal decision. And yes, the play call was the wrong answer, too.

I'm going to give a game ball to Wilson and Broderick Jones for their effort and hustle. Wilson tracked Addison down like a raptor trailing his prey. Loved it!! Jones hustling down field with Rogers escaping the pocket and picking up a fumbled ball. McCormick was just behind him. Outstanding effort all the way around.
Yeah, that sure was some great hustle from Broderick Jones. Too bad he can't block his grandmother.

The problem with Wilson is he is usually trailing his prey rather than pouncing on it in the backfield for a kill.

That whiff sack attempt is usually what ya see from Wilson when he does manage to track the ball
Into the backfield. He is a plus as a coverage backer but definitely still a minus in the run game and pass rushing.

I liked the pick and am rooting for the kid but damn he needs some strength or something cuz all he does is try to avoid contact, take poor angles trying to run around opponents and trail plays…dude needs to add a touch of weight, a lot of strength if he wants to become a real playmaker.

But slow clap for delaying the eminent TD the Vikes were about to get by chasing down his prey.
I’ll be impressed when he isn’t getting thrown around like a rag doll every time an opponent gets hands on him.

He’s got a ton of potential, a ton of growth opportunities to become a solid backer.
Really not sure what you're watching. I thought Payton Wilson had an outstanding game. You don't make 13 tackles with 8 solos by taking poor angles.

Definitely his best game as a pro in my book. I was beginning to wonder about him.

Nothing of what I am about to say is meant Neg toward you, but think of it this way. Mike Tomlin's reg season winning percent is 63, playoffs are 42 so if what you are saying about close games is true, which I have NO reason to doubt you then that means most of our loses are by blowout. so we are blown out of regular season games over 30 percent of the time and playoff games over 50 percent of the time. and he is worried about taking chances???? I just don't get it.
As of last July he was 98-61-2 in one loss games. That puts him as the best current coach in the league and one of the best ever in one score games. His ability to win one score games well above the mean could be a factor in lopsided playoff losses as this ability to win more close games than stats says he should helps him get less than championship caliber teams into the playoffs where they then get trounced. It also contributes to lower draft picks which negatively impact the quality of the roster. So, you could at one of his biggest strengths is actually his Achilles heel?

I think he is improving. Issac was the bigger liability this game. Maybe he is part of the problem for Jones. If the guy supposed to be mentoring and helping the young tackle is struggling it would accentuate the inexperience of Jones. Guard may be a big need next year if not this year.

This.
Spot on man.

That guy has some serious speed too. That TD saving tackle was damn impressive.
It was damn impressive. Addison runs a 4.49. Wilson was a good five yards behind him when he caught the ball.

Sometimes benching a guy (or at least having him split reps in this case) can light a fire under his ***. I give Tomlin some credit here. Wilson has all the potential in the world, and if he realizes it, the kid could really turn out to something special.

I really don't understand the one-score game narrative as a positive. Tomlin wins a lot of close games in the regular season. So what? It's not a "strength." It just proves that he can squeak by the easier competition played in September through December, only to get crushed by better teams in January. It makes perfect sense, actually.

And yes, you can chalk up another one-score win for the advanced in-game tactician with that victory against the Vikings, a game in which the Steelers led by 18 points with less than 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, and managed to desperately hold on and win by 3. Impressive.

Yes

He is quite excellent in taking mid-crappy teams he should beat by 10-20 points and keeping them within striking distance to pad that 1 score stat.

He really knows how to turtle up and keep bad teams in a game, a rare skill.

Congrats Mediocre Mike 👏 you’re the GOaT.

Mike Tomlins strategies often hold the team back from blowing out bad teams... thus he gets a lot of late, close wins that an Andy Reid or Sean McVay win by 20 points or more...

In the playoffs teams dont hold anything back and are aggressive... Tomlin's conservative reactionary strategies dont translate. Its basically Shottenheimer2.0

It is a positive, mostly, as far as coaching ability is concerned, and they haven't all been against inferior teams. Quite a few of those are against the Ravens. Yes, some are because of losing bigger leads but he still held those leads. He is 15-1 since 2019 with second half lead. I don't think the issues is holding back in the playoffs, he has coached aggressively in the past in the playoffs with more talented teams, it is simply not having the better team and being outmanned.

See my response to Topseed. I can see your point, but I don't think it is correct. His winning percentage in these games is so far above the mean that his decisions seem to be correct more often than naught otherwise he wouldn't win so many of them and win at the pace he does overall. I do agree this strategy hurts in the playoffs but simply because it gets less talented teams into the playoffs. The ability to get teams into the playoffs that shouldn't be there may lead to frustrating losses once there, but it is a sign of great coaching in those regular season games.

Marty was a great coach in his own right, flawed but great.

Some guy by the name of AI something said this on the Google machine..

Based on recent seasons and long-term betting trends, the Steelers' ATS record as a favorite is considered below average. Mike Tomlin's tenure has established a notable pattern of the team performing better as an underdog than as a favorite.

Doesn't that define a good coach by an important measure? I would kill to have a manager for the Pirates that could coach bad teams to more wins than losses. Considering the lack of money they will spend it is the only way they will have a shot.

Tomlin may not be the coach many want for this team, but I don't think anyone can argue he isn't a great coach at knowing how to win more than he loses overall.

I don’t buy he has had less talented teams if so that is on him too he signs off on it. But still he is X and O deficient. Which is why he can initially put a game plan together but if it calls for adjustments ruhroh. He sits back and hopes the talent prevails.

In the playoffs there is no masking those X and O deficiencies. Which is why they are flat out embarrassed more often than not. I think Arthur is allowed to call his plays. On D Mike has his hand in the cookie jar which would explain those D meltdowns again more often than not. It is a pattern which the players have changed but captain cliche has remained with almost identical results.

Just can’t buy into anything else…

Tomlin may not be the coach that many want. Rooney wants him.

Tomlin wins in Rooneys office at contract renewal time.

Schottenheimer was absolutely a great coach. We for some reason forget that his 2006 Chargers team was completely outplaying the Patsies*** in San Diego, up 21-13 in the 4th quarter, when a Chargers DB intercepted Brady - only to fumble the ball and have the Patsies*** recover.

If the dude simply goes down when the picks the ball off, Chargers beat Brady in his prime in the playoffs.

Out of 160-some games, of course they haven't all been against inferior teams. I'm talking about the aggregate. And the Ravens are a division rival, so it's not surprising that they play a lot of close games with Baltimore.

If this was the case in the playoffs.....agreed, but isn't.

Sadly, Wilson was tackling to far down field. Grant it, he had a great game and a career defining tackle, but still seems to be a little down field to be considered a run stuffer. He can improve in my opinion.

Salute the nation
