Game Balls, Game Goats & FU's...............vs Bungles

It's Fichtner. When Ben abandoned his garbage calls, the lights went out.

JC wasn’t really getting much going at the beginning. Even up the gut. Yeah- Fichtner’s play calling is much to be desired. They struggled fo run at the 29th ranked run defense. 44 yards total for the day...

Almost every run was east and west. What’s this a planned attack? We saw it last week too. I believe Vilma said the rest run of the game that I saw was a guard pulling for the first time in the game (late in the game). How can they be this bad?? Is it loaded boxes or safeties cheating due to over emphasis on short passing??

Vilma made a good point that the Jet sweep only works when the defense is worried about the run up the middle. The point of the Jet sweep is to make the DEs hesitate and not crash down to stop the run up the middle. When they don't care about stopping the run, stopping the sweep is real easy.

Part of why they aren't connecting on deep balls is the lack of the run as well. DBs aren't worried about any play fakes.

Fichtner is trying to get the big plays that come from play fakes without establishing the run.

the connection to DJ was a deep ball....a perfectly thrown one at that

That’s what happens when you let a big time coach get away, and try to replace him with skippy the ball boy.

I got **** on for saying this last week, lol. Munchak turned this OL from "meh" to league best.

Johnson had a few passes hit him in the hands that he dropped or didn't bring in. He had some great plays today, but like others said, he's still showing what is holding him back. Another criticism of him I have is that he doesn't EVER fight for the ball downfield. If the ball doesn't come directly to his hands he will watch it fly by or imagine that it's somehow going to phase through the defender and into his lap. Ju Ju got an easy DPI on that same type of play by coming back into the defender for the ball.

As a team, though, we probably had 8 on-target balls dropped or go through their hands. Ju Ju had at least one, I can think of two from Chase. Really illustrates how much we bulldozed them despite the drops and the non-existent running game.

Regarding the running game, as I said in another thread:

I want to see more of Snell. Conner can't do anything without a hole and when he does have space he is incapable of running straight without doing a ******* titty shake like he's tassel-twirling. He's not athletic, he doesn't have burst, he can't run outside, and he dances every chance he gets. The one good thing he can do is break tackles. Snell makes more out of nothing and runs harder.

I was watching the Texans earlier in the day....one of their wideouts caught a ball going toward the sideline with the defender a few steps away and no one else near them....he caught it and went right out of bounds, I know if the same pass went to DJ he would have caught it, spun back inside and gained at least 10 more yards....

Game balls: Ben, Watt, Berry.
Goat: run call, why does everything have to go out side? We had some nice gains inside the tackles and, even when they didn't work, at least we we were not losing yardage.
FU: Fox anal last Johnathon Vilma. Perhaps one of the worst game calls i have ever heard.

We need a better running game if we want to win in the playoffs.

The Steelers only attempted 19 running plays...and they had the lead all damn game. This offense isn't built to run the ball, on purpose. It's hard for a Steeler's fan to wrap their heads around that but this isn't the 2005 or 1978 Steelers ground and pound any longer. The Steelers are going to throw the ball 80% of the time and with this defense, good luck keeping up.

and for the record, I agree that it's the wrong approach. one dimensional offenses don't fare well in the red zone.

Agree 100% on the jet sweep. That works maybe once a game.

Randy went to the well too many times, but we have a problem running the ball with Conner. He offers very little outside of the tackles. This is why we are trying jet sweeps and end arounds.

I think the problem is a coach radio's in the formation for these plays to the guy wearing the green dot, and the defense is ready for it.

I don’t think it’s much Fichtner as it is run blocking. It sucks

I think it definitely starts with Fichtner. He calls those stupid plays. These wide runs with Conner have not worked all year, but they keep calling it. Yes, the execution leaves a lot to be desired, but if a play hasn't worked at all the entire season, why keep running it multiple times a game? Your team has already proven they can't execute it, so stop calling it. Conner's best runs were between the tackles. No coincidence, I suppose.

and right now this is Washington's value. He does'nt drop balls and he is good fighting for the ball.

Game ball to all. finally could just watch the game without breaking the TV.

Goat . running game has flown the coop. is it the line, running back or how the defense is stacking the line.

BIG FU to the Cincinnati coach for the fake punt then instead of trying to get a TD kick field goal.

To be fair, Ben was ripping balls yesterday. It's probably the hardest I've seen him throw short and intermediate balls in years. This was due to the wind. It's why the Bengals couldn't convert a long throw all day long (except for the play where we completely blew the coverage). High winds is never easy to throw the ball, and Ben has the arm strength and experience to do it in these conditions, but I wouldn't expect as many drops when we're not dealing with high winds all game.

Agreed. He does run well with the zone blocking scheme and does get a good 3-4 yards when they are trapping. I’m glad they are having success with the short and intermediate passing. I would like to see them reestablish balancing the offense. When your defense is gassed from being on the field, a solid run game can help.

Missed most of this game and will have to rewatch later today. The running game and slow starts continue to plague us if there ever could be a downfall to an undefeated team. We gotta figure out how to get some running lanes open and not run those awful tosses or sweeps to our RBs. I would be fine with running power I and mixing in some play action so the defense can't just stack the box when we show a FB on the field.

FU - Our internet service. We use Hulu Live and Roku's on the TV's. Internet crapped out 5 minutes before the game started probably due to high winds. Had to watch the game on my wife's cell phone.
