Forgotten Performances: Kordell Stewart vs the Broncos

Man took a lot of unfair criticism and grief ...

He was who he was... an exciting football player that I enjoyed watching....good and bad..

The one thing I took from the video was how loud 3 Rivers was...
This is the types of games people tend to forget, but the man was talented.

Just as good as O’Donnell imo...
And definitely more entertaining to watch..

I think even Mr. “I want entertainment “ would agree with that lol

Seriously? How many SBs did Kordell start in? Do you remember the game that happened a few weeks after this game to the same opponent?

BTW here are their stats:

O'Donnell: 57.8 Comp%, 120 TDs 68 Ints 81.8 Passer rating
Stewart: 55.8 Comp%, 77 TDs 84 ints 70.7 Passer rating

Yea, Kordell was just as good a QB as O'Donnell... right. Also Kordell had a playoff comp% of 48.6 with 2 TDs and 8 ints.

The electricity that Kordell generated was amazing to start his career. He had RECORD setting jersey sales and fasted to #1 seller to start a career (I still have a #10 Stewart jersey). He was better than many think but still lacking in his QB role. "Slash" role was unequaled but his insistence at QB was his downfall.

PS......... Great game highlites and Kordell has a lot of highlites reels to view. Just electric as hell and the city feed off that at the time.

Kordell .631 win %

Neal.... .5897 win %

It's a fan wide misperceptions on Kordell being below par.

"As a Steeler QB" ... what a load of crap. It's a team sport. we were talking about the QB position NOT the best team they played on. Kordell was an erratic, worm burning QB that couldn't handle it in the playoffs. He wasn't in O'Donnell's league. People ***** about O'Donnell because of 2 ints where the WR ran the wrong route both times. So don't give me team stats (like when the rats went 7-1 with Dilfer and won a SB) when talking about QBs.

I think by "as a Steelers QB", he meant the records excluding when they played for other teams.I could be wrong but I think that is why that was mentioned.

The other similarity between Kordell and Neil. They both played with lights out defenses and fell short. Neil was a better passer. Kordell was a great athlete. By far the most elusive qb in the teams history that I can think of.
I think this is a fair assessment. I think their win losses should be factored into the mix too. Championships are the ultimate want but you want your QB to be leading your teams to wins too. Both QBs had their moments despite fans wanting to diss one or the other. Trust me they were a lot better than what we saw on the field last year in that monstrosity of a watch.

Your math is way off.

O'Donnel's winning percentage was 63.9

Kordell's was 61.3 %

EDIT: That % is still close enough and also shows both were slightly above average.

That's what early Sunday mornings will get yaz but thanks for the "POINT OUT". Carry on

I never hated Kordell but he drove me insane. Aside from the running skills and speed, he was Jay Cutler. He would do just enough at QB to start giving you hope that he was going to rise to the next level and then rip your heart out with ridiculously horrible mistakes every time it counted. It was never a matter of IF that was mistake was coming, it was only a matter of when.

In watching that video I forgot Yancy Thigpen was that big. He was a full grown man.

I think Stewart would do much better playing in this era. The coaching seems to have evolved in helping the dual threat qb play to his strengths and minimize his weaknesses. Back in Kordell's day it was all about forcing him into being a pocket passer. Now with read option, rpo type offenses a player like Kordell has a much better chance.

SteelerSask:

Eirheart (sp) did just that for the couple years he was there. He divided the field into 1/3s and plays for that so as Kordell only had to worry about 1/3 of the field / reads. Kordell excelled at that time and then new OCs did what you describe.

Yancy is one of my favorite all time receivers. Just a skilled, dependable baller!

If only the Steelers had an Offensive Coordinator that built the offense to Kordell's strengths, instead of having a do what I say attitude and forcing him to be a pocket passer, they could have won a Superbowl. Especially with that defense.

It's why you have to respect the Ravens for building their offense around LJ's skills instead of forcing him to the type of QB he isn't.

Very true, but only playing a 1/3 of the field is a limiting factor that the defenses could exploit too. Modern offenses and rules would really benefit a Kordell Stwart type player. The only players I can think of with his type of elusiveness are Vick and Cunningham. And now you have Jackson and Wilson.

One of my favorite Steelers of all time. Not joking lol

Kordell was ahead of his time. He would be viewed differently in today's game.

I think Vick, Jackson, and Kordell were/are the elite speed freaks. I think everyone else is a notch below what they could do run wise.

The Ds could to a degree but we both are saying the same thing. thank you

You beat me to it, Kordell was fast as hell but he had that elusiveness that few and far between have. I had a friend who was a Colorado Buffs fanatic and all she talked about was Kordell, till he became a STEELERS player and then suddenly he wasn't worth 2 cents............. go figure ?
