Finney and Nix need to play more

I like Foster, and this is nothing against him. But Finney moves better. You can pull more going in both directions. I don't know if Foster pulls that much. But he is a veteran leader out there. Good problem to have on the OL for a change, huh?

Nix should get more playing time. Finney gives you guard depth where you feel fine if he has to go in there. Never a bad thing.

One of the Depot writers talked about this yesterday. His thoughts are that Foster is good, but the job will one day be Finney's. Like, in the next couple of years. I tend to agree with that assessment.

Foster is a steady type. He holds his own, but his ceiling on performance seems lower than Finney's.

IMO Finney is far better on the move ( Foster is slow ), better as an inline blocker and in two of his starts this season has really impressed. When was the last time Foster impressed?

We'll see what Tomlin does. Finney to me is the better player, and one who upgrades the rushing attack, adds extra nastiness and fits best with Bell.

Finney seems better than Foster and Nix is a bull at fullback. These two need to play more

Nix yes, Finney can have a seat when Foster is healthy. All those OL penalties were called on Finney yesterday. He filled in admirably but he's not our best LG

I would have to see Finley's above the head measurements, before I would decide how much to play him.

Those big head ******* are only good for head and shoulder commercials.

Finney is a former wrestler with huge hands, and it shows. He clamps down well and gets leverage. On one of the scoring plays he buckled his man's knees.

In pass protection, he seems sold. College writes up says he allowed just 2.5 sacks over four years in 52 consecutive starts.

Tomlin will probably do what Munchak recommends which will be far more informed than what Coach recommends.

Foster is solid, has more experience, and his strength is pass blocking.

Finney is visibly faster, uses his hands well, and is a rookie. I will concede that Finney has great upside, and I am confident going to him this year in case of injury, but he has to be behind Foster on the depth chart for a reason. Possibly experience. That being said, I would not be surprised if he is named the starter next year. The kid can play!

Whatever Munchak recommends is fine by me but Tomlin picks who starts. What makes you so sure Tomlin will take his advice?

Usually, it takes an injury or a below average starting vet for Tomlin to give a younger player a chance. But we've seen Finney start and he has had two very good performances.

Finney is going to be the starter after next season, since he will cost maybe $1,000,000 while Foster will cost four times that much if kept for the 2018 season.

Why pay that extra $3 million for the same productivity?

Better yet, we can trade Foster for something. With Bell getting huge holes with the Finny and Nix combo, coaching 101 says play them more.

I wouldn't go crowning Nix and Finny the next Kreider and Faneca just yet. There have been 3 200 yard rushing games this season and 2 of them were given up by the Bills D. They do that against Cincy and the Ravens the next 2 weeks then we can talk.

Until then, it's just 1 great game from two unsung heroes.

You watch your mouth when you're dissing the Snow Plow! ;)

Next year's cap:
Foster $3.6M
Finney not under contract ($450k this season).

Foster isn't breaking the bank. I'd try and resign Finney, and still keep Foster for depth. You're only getting $1.758M back if you cut Foster next year. I doubt you can get a guard of his caliber for that money to backup or start. I'd say he stays no matter what, but whether Foster backs up or starts is up to Coach Munchak

Foster has been great this year. He'll play out his contract. Finney will be the future.

I think Finney is a far better fit in zone blocking, trapping, pulling schemes.

In the two games that BJ Finney has started for us this season, the Steelers have rushed for a total of 389 yards.

Yes, that would be the Chiefs and Bills games. The Chiefs and Bills happen to give up the 27th and 28th most rushing yards in the league this season. My point still stands that if Finney (and Nix) can play that way against the Ravens who dominate against the run, then we may be onto something. I would refrain from jumping to conclusions about a guy who has a whopping 2 career starts against 2 bottom of the league rushing defenses, but all signs are pointing to being a promising player.

Talking about trading Foster just because we have Finney now is ridiculous. I'm not saying you were saying that, it was just brought up in the thread which was the reason for my original post. That's like saying DWill had some better games filling in for Bell so let's trade Bell while we can...oh wait that was being floated around here at one point too lol

Oh I don't disagree with you, and I actually believe Foster to be one of the more underrated players on this team the last few years. I will say that, so far, the arrow is definitely pointing up for Finney as he's been tremendous in his two starts this year. Especially considering how he was thrust into both of the games that he participated in on such a short notice. It seemed Fosters injury came late in the week both times.

Spit out my Johnny Walker on that one (Don't judge me ... it's been a loooong day).
