He had guys open downfield, there was at least one SN member in attendance, I believe they said the same.

Tomlin acolyte. Not on him at all -
Fichtner has taken a lot of criticism for what many felt was a pretty conservative game plan in the first half of the 24-20 loss, when Rudolph was 8 of 15 for just 40 yards in the first two quarters.

But Fichtner said Friday, as the Steelers (0-3) continued their preparation for Monday night's game at Heinz Field against the Bengals (0-3), that was not by design. Not by a long shot -- no pun intended.

"I don’t know if it was conservative. We put ourselves in position," Fichtner said. "We had some opportunities for some throws and even for some shots. If you don’t connect or throw them, it never materializes.

"We were able to go down the field early. You’ve got to throw them. You’ve got to attempt to throw it there."

we completed 2 passes farther than 1 yard downfield. worst in NFL since Tebow against Chiefs in 2001

Bombs Away!

Steelers OC: We’ve got to throw the ball down the field

The Steelers threw a lot of short passes during Mason Rudolph‘s first start at quarterback last week, but it doesn’t sound like that was exactly the game plan that offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner drew up against the 49ers.

Rudolph hit Dionte Johnson for a 39-yard touchdown in the second half and JuJu Smith-Schuster turned a 12-yard pass into a 76-yard touchdown, but the offense was otherwise unsuccessful when the ball traveled a long way through the air. Fichtner was asked about a lack of deep throws during a Friday media session and said that there were opportunities to do so early that Rudolph didn’t take.

“We were able to go down the field early,” via Josh Rowntree of KDKA. “You’ve got to throw them. You’ve got to throw it. You’ve got to attempt to throw it there.”

Fichtner went on to say that he wasn’t second-guessing Rudolph because many things come into play for a quarterback deciding whether to pull the trigger. Rudolph didn’t disagree with Fichtner when the same topic came up during his own press conference.

“For sure. Opportunities in the first quarter, really the first couple drives, I could’ve been a little more aggressive toward,” Rudolph said. “Learning experiences. I’m an aggressive person. That’s who I’ve always been at the quarterback position, so a little unlike me. Mistakes you look forward to cleaning up.”

He’ll get a chance to cut loose against the Bengals on Monday night.

The buck stops over that way.

that reminded me of the following quote:

“I start with the thumb,” he said, pointing it at himself. “Most certainly. You’re not going to routinely do the same things and expect the results to change."

wish I could remember who said that.

MR made mistakes - first start and all that.

MR will get some experience under his belt and either improve or become a statistic. I think it'll be more the former. Lets say they win half their games with MR behind center...

Fitch's quotes make Fitch sound like an *******.

... Ben comes back in 2020 and resumes the quest for 7. MR sits, but sits with the résumé of serviceable backup. Ben plays out his last two years (the outcome isn't really important to MR's scenario). Ben retires. The Steelers lowball MR. At this point the market for starting QBs is well beyond stupid money. Garapallo commanded $130M with a similar résumé two years ago. MR looks at the Steeler offer, remembers being thrown under the bus after his first start by the tool that should have had the cojones to say "Look, it was the kid's first start - WE'LL get better", reflects on the rest of the slow motion rolling train wreck that is Head Coach Mike Tomlin's Pittsburgh Steelers, and says 'seeyah, wouldn't want to be yuh". Do you blame him?

Ben misses open guys in every game. I don't think I ever remember hearing a coach throw him under the bus like Fichtner just did to Rudolph. There has to be friction there moving forward.

D'ya think?

13 years, Art. 13 years. Why?

He needs to improve his accuracy before he bombs away. Otherwise it will be bombs going the other direction.

Mason needs to go to Randy’s office take the play book thrown on the floor pull down his pants and piss on it. And then take his play call sheet and shove it up his ***.

Mason was 12-14 on plays at or behind the line of scrimmage and 2-13 on passes more than a yard downfield.

They were playing 8 men in the box, where were the play action passes to vut =down on the run blitzes and make them pay for selling out ?

talk about throwing a young guy under the bus. Do these coaches hold no accountability?

I’m not saying it never happens... but I honestly can’t remember the last time a Steelers coach said he should have done a better job

I'm sorry but that Fichtner interview was very "throw under the bus" ish. He could have answered that so much more confidence building wise than he did. All of this kind if stuff points to lackadazical coaching as in to lazy to actually give a damn. If the coaching is pointing fingers to avert the problem, what are they doing to HELP coach the player up out of the problem???? POPcorn isn't popcorn just because you say it is, it could be **** without butter.

Salute the nation

Hell ******* yes!! But no one in the media is smart or ballsy enough to ask about the important decisive things such as that. Where was motion to help Mason identify the type of D they were in. **** Fitchner - he's just another jagoff who can't coach, but lays all the blame on the players!!!

I can't remember the last time a Steelers coach threw a guy under the bus like that either, Aggie. I mean his first ******* start, on the road, and with a **** game-plan you saddle him with. Nice job Coach.

I'd be okay with Tomlin or Butler throwing Mark "Loafer" Barron under the bus because that's what he should be getting minimum (I would have cut his *** right after they left the stadium).

I know this will go against the grain but I was listening to a guy on Stan's show the other day. He said Mason is missing wide open WRs not only down the field but right in front of him. He said he had a horrible game. One of the worst he'd ever seen. I watched the game but T.V. doesn't show wide angles behind or in front of the QB. So I have no idea if it's true. It's hard to see WRs, TEs, and leaked out RBs on a standard TV shot. But Finch maybe right. Mason may have just missed them. He's nervous and it's his first game to start.

If I can find some time, I will try to look at the all-22's but I have no doubt it happened. No need for the coach to call him out publicly though (unless he is trying to get his own radio show).
