Falcons fined $350K, lose draft pick

The Atlanta Falcons have been fined $350,000 and will forfeit a 2016 draft pick for piping crowd noise into the Georgia Dome during home games over the last two seasons.

The NFL announced the penalties Monday, saying that the Falcons will lose a fifth-round pick in next year's draft. If the Falcons have multiple picks in the fifth round, they will lose the highest of those selections, according to the NFL.

"What took place was wrong and nowhere near the standards by which we run our business," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said in a statement. "Anytime there are actions that compromise the integrity of the NFL or threaten the culture of our franchise, as this issue did, they will be dealt with swiftly and strongly."

Blank also stated that the Falcons will not appeal the punishment. He acknowledged wrongdoing last month, saying that he found the situation "embarrassing."

The NFL had been investigating the Falcons for piping in the noise while opposing teams were huddling, trying to call their plays. Some around the league have argued that silent counts have rendered crowd noise more irrelevant, and it's difficult to discern how much of an advantage it gave the Falcons.

NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said that the Falcons committed the violation "throughout the 2013 season and into the 2014 season until the club was notified last November that the violation had been identified."

"The League conducted a thorough investigation of this matter, and we cooperated fully," Blank said. "We understand the penalties imposed and their impact on our team, and we will not appeal the league's decisions. Further, we have addressed the matter internally and taken actions to ensure that something like this does not happen again.

"The Falcons and all of our other businesses are built upon a foundation of values that drive our decision making. This issue was a clear failure in that regard. I apologize for any embarrassment this situation has caused the NFL, our fans, and our Falcons players and associates."

Vincent revealed that the NFL concluded that Roddy White, the Falcons' former director of marketing -- not the four-time Pro Bowl receiver, was "directly responsible for the violation."

Falcons president Rich McKay was not aware of White's violations, according to the NFL, but will be suspended from the league's competition committee from April 1 through at least June 30 for failing to ensure that the franchise complied with league rules.

The Falcons went 3-4 at the Georgia Dome this season -- they played a "home" game in London -- and were blown out there 34-3 by the Carolina Panthers in Week 17 with the NFC South Division title on the line.

The New Orleans Saints, who lost picks in 2012 and 2013 as a result of their bounty scandal, were the last NFL team to forfeit a draft pick. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the NFL has taken away 15 draft picks since 1980.

So what about those deflated balls. Is that a thing or did they burn the tapes, I mean the evidence.

The ravens were then awarded a 3 in compensation for this loss.

kraft got his butt spanked by the Rog on a private party

The league said they were going to come down hard. Losing a 5th and a small fine seems like a slap on the wrist to me. A team cheats and gets this. A player takes steroids or HGH and ends up losing his career. The league is such a joke.

I wonder how many other stadiums do this?

What's even funnier is they managed a losing record at home in 2014 one of the seasons where they pumped up the volume. Now that's funny.

They didn't have to pump noise in for the Steelers game, we made enough. Of course in the wrong direction.

Big picture. This is setting precedent for giving the Pats** a slap on the wrist for the deflated footballs. They can now say "look at the penalty given to the Falcons as the baseline."

The Steelers lost a 3rd for a salary cap violation that they brought to the attention of the league. It all seems very arbitrary.

lol at not addressing the Pats but throwing out punishment elsewhere

we see ya Roger the dodger

and the Browns GM was suspended for 4 games.

next up... not the super bowl losing/winning Pats

This is right on. They are setting the pats** up losing a conditional 7th round pick in 2030.

The league and how roger handles everything is such a joke. I won't spend another dime a nfl Liscensed product and luckily know where to get some really nice knock offs. That's right roger I wear clothing you don't get a dime from

Odd how this is viewed a disgrace with a hefty penalty, but nothing for deflating balls during a playoff game from the darlings of the East. Noise that players go against each week yet inflated balls easier to throw and catch is overlooked as no big deal.

Why the speculatios? All the national writers have said nothing will come from the investigation, because there is no smoking gun. Heck even the Pitt beat writers have chalked this one as DOA. Basically, Kraft is a prideful man, regardless of what we think of his coaches or consultants ( hi Ernie!!). He called the commish's bluff.

All artificial noise should be banned. This includes the Seahawks who designed the overhangs of the stadium and used certain materials to reflect sound and make it louder. They basically designed their stadium to be a bullhorn.

There is a penalty on the books for crowd noise. technically the 12th man is illegal...lol

I do not believe there was a bluff at all. This was going to be covered up from the start. Maybe when the steelers play the cheats all the fans from the burgh can show up and toss a bunch of deflated foot balls over the railing onto the field and into the tunnel where the cheatriots come out.

I applaud Goodell for this. The Steelers are adding end zone seats. This will help the defense a tad in the red zone.

In my opinion what will help the defense in the redzone is "talent". We get some of that and we should be better.

standard standard

Whaqt about those deflated balls??????? Seems the NFL has forgotten all about them. I mean, the integrity of the game wasn't really compromised, like say,...........piped in crowd noise would compromise it. Think of it, the only sound change would be just a decible LOWER, durring hand offs. Maybe even less upon a fast ball(insured grip) from tommy boy, to a receiver catching it. Look at all the bennefits, earth friendly (compressor doesn't run as long), less wear out(ball will last longer saving more cows), less handling (ball boys / referees less likely to drop or fumble), autographability (less expanded cow hide to cover with sharpie while signing, save save save), this list can go on for a long time.
..........MY point being, with all the bebefits of the deflated football, either a punishment or a reward is in order.

ROGER, you dipship fagfucker, get this done!!!!!!! Don't just sweep it under the rug, an oppertunity does exist here!!!

SPAECIAL NOTE: No harm or criticism was internded to any ***(s).
