Extension for Mike Tomlin

As to the answer to the OP's question, I hope it's a resounding no. If it isn't, then Art II is just sleepwalking through this thing and Dan Rooney is very sorely missed.

You could have made you post more clear. Just throwing out stats with no context or explanation doesn't help. Since you claim you weren't turning this into a Tomlin/Cowher debate then why use this format?

One word...AGENDA

It's been more than a hiccup with Tomlin. We're 8 years into various degrees of bed ******** at this point.

The difference between the non-playoff years with Cowher is that those 1998-2000 teams were in complete rebuild modes and by the end of the 2000 season, the new core was established and the Steelers we're ready to contend again.

Cowher never completely squandered championship-caliber personnel like Tomlin has. Cowher at least got to the door of the Super Bowl on a regular basis.

I almost got an aneurysm when I read the thread title. A question mark would have helped the general health of SN

Sheesh.

Vader you're right I could have been more clear. I just brought it up because I remember so many people being up in arms about Cowher keeping his job at the time, so I did see that basic parallel.

Either way from the media session today, sounds like maybe I should give them a little more credit.

How long was Marvin Lewis the head coach in Cincinnati? Try 15 years and he never won anything. His playoff record was terrible and the fans suffered through many seasons. Lewis was of African American decent, so saying its some sort of white privilege for a head coach to last in the NFL is just plain wrong.

Sean Petyon, for example, has 12 playoff appearances, 7 division titles, and a super bowl victory. That's why he stays.

Not sure what you are implying Coach in the last sentence of the first paragraph. Maybe you need to clarify it better.

As for the stats game for comparison of Payton’s coaching career..including his suspension year in 2012.

This coach has 15 playoff appearances, 6 division titles, one conference title, two SB appearances and one SB victory. Try being objective for once and ignore names. Who has had a better coaching career up to this point?

I believe you both are confusing playoff appearances with playoff games. You can only "appear" one time in each postseason.

Payton has appeared in 7 of 12 postseasons, and is 8-5 in playoff games.
Tomlin has appeared in 8 of 12 postseasons, and is 8-7 in playoff games.

Either way, their resumes are pretty close, unless of course the favored Saints go on to win the Super Bowl again this year. Then you'll have one coach riding high with a second championship ring, and the other heading in the opposite direction, with his team missing the playoffs and having to deal with the AB mess he helped foster.

ARe you saying that Marvel Smith, Clark Haggans, Joey Porter, Aaron Smith, Alan Faneca, Deshea Townsend and Hines Ward are NOT Cowher players? Those players were drafted in 1998-2000.

I didn't say that at all and you know it. Obviously you want to start ****.

Top, was using the stats format for Payton as a barometer to Tomlin’s. As you indicated they are similar. Coach implies because of Payton’s performance he should stays as HC. Yet while Tomlin has a comparable if not better performance dossier, he is adamant Tomlin must go. Basically talking out of both sides of his mouth. It was the reason why I asked if he needed clarification of his Lewis comments.

Personally, I would see how this off-season and the upcoming season plays out before I get into any talks with him. His seat should be smoking and I hope they take a 'wait & see' approach. I'll be highly disappointed if they rush to the podium again to ink a new deal.

I didn't think he should have got the last one unless he got to the Super Bowl.
The team MVP should have been Chris Boswell. Shades with a good kicker goes 13-3 and is four last-minute FG's away from being 9-7. Shades with a ****** kicker goes 9-6-1.

I see.

I pointed out before the start of the 2017 season, I believe it was, that Payton and Tomlin had had pretty similar career paths, and maybe I was being a little hard on the latter. It's tough to win a Super Bowl.

But also, in retrospect (and in keeping with almost always playing down to the level of the competition), Tomlin and the Steelers were trailing to a touchdown underdog with under a minute to play, before pulling it out. Payton and the Saints, on the other hand, won that Super Bowl by two touchdowns, as a 5-point underdog.

And now, the glaring difference is Payton has his team in great position to win another championship, while we just witnessed Tomlin's playoff chances collapse from 98% to 0% in the final six weeks of the season.

Again, it was not my intention to get into Cowher v Tomlin at all. Slash made my point way better than I did. They recognized those lean years as something for Cowher to work through and I wouldn't be surprised if they view the current situation similarly. Given what we've seen up to this point, would you?

No offense intended but Cowher's "lean years" in no way resembled the **** show we've seen with this team lately. To say we've become the Stains is a realistic statement. WTF?
