Watching games isn't the same for me anymore.

I think its the excitement level of the team.

Not real sure, but I watch this defense and its a shell of the defenses we had in the past ,, in 90's and thru 2008.

The most excitement I get is seeing Deebo chase a play down or get after a QB. That's it. I like watching how far our punter can kick it sometimes too.

Ben can throw it but rarely throws to anyone besides AB. And AB makes a play and is an asshat .

While I think Leveon is/can be a great back,, this dancing thing is too much.. I want the bus back.

I know it just sounds like bitching,, But I really miss The excitement and wanting To watch the game.

can a mod please move this to general discussion.

maybe you're just not as excitable as you used to be?? :noidea:

A rough patch will do that to anyone.

I think a few offseason changes could bring back some of it.

In the mean time record the games, and start watching 45 minutes later.

Yinz can cut out the commercials /penalties.

Perhaps that will take a little suck out of it too.

Not my approach as I am too obsessive of a fan to wait.

But maybe it will help yinz out some, who knows.

I'm not bored with the Steelers. But I'm a complete fan of the smash mouth defend ever blade of grass style they used to have. I care much more for defense than offense.

I think it's age. I noticed it about 5 years ago. I still enjoy watching the games but my days of jumping up and down, yelling at the TV and decking my self out in Steeler garb every Sunday are over. I don't feel like I live and die with the outcomes of the games any more. Sure it's great when they win but my life doesn't revolve around it the way it did when I was in my 20's or even early 30's.

I still get excited, but the officiating and poor rule changes, are killing the love of the game for me.

Charles hit it right on the head.

It's pretty damn hard to get excited when the flow of the game is constantly interrupted.

I miss the defensive style we used to play too.

The first couple weeks into the season I'm usually still adjusting from MLB to NFL so I'm not full football mode yet.
Then I slowly get more focused and now that it's getting to be that time of the year when all these games are huge, I have to say, I'm pretty damn pumped for this weekend's game vs. Giants. I need to see Ben win another SB or two!

One thing I like about watching college games is that the fans are a lot more passionate and vested in what is happening on the field.

The NFL priced out the average fan and a lot the fans are no more rowdy for the game they are watching than they were for the orchestra performance they attended the previous Sunday.

That and very unreliable defense.

I agree completely. We need more of this:

Never been too keen on following the rest of the nfl outside of the afc north. Excitement? Hmm. Always a Steelers fan, although some games can be snooze fest. That's any sport. Take a viewing break once in awhile. I miss a few Pens and Steelers games and go out and do stuff. But there are a lot of times me and the wife and my parents get together and watch the black & gold

To much interest on stats for the fantasy leagues, many fans like players not teams, sit in the stands and listen at the conversation of people sitting around you. More concern at scoreboard watching than , excitement of the game.

The NFL isn't nearly as bad as what it's being made out to be right now. That doesn't mean I don't complain. I can't stand the greed of the league and the owners as they put it to the diehard fans who got them there. I don't like the rules changes that shift that allows the defense to do nothing. Tackling could improve and fewer penalties would be nice. The length of games is way too long because of the commercials. However, there have been some great matchups in recent weeks and the past two NFL weekends have had some outstanding finishes.

I still get excited for the Steelers, but I don't see a great locker room. There aren't a lot of big personalities in there that make you feel connected with the team. Sure AB and Bell are active on social media, but that feels like some manufactured self promotion. You don't have big personalities like Bettis, Porter, Ward, Keisel, Farrior, etc. who are the heart and sole of the team. You don't have the quiet guys like Smith who do the dirty work and just get the job done. You don't have a special guy like Polamalu. I like what Ben brings as well as Foster and Heyward, but there are a lot of young guys still finding there place. DeAngelo really brought a spark to the locker room and I love having him on the team. Just my opinion.

For a lot of us Steeler football meant a crushing defense for last few decades until recently. Between a lousy defense, a league that doesn't want good defense anyway, and too many commercials and penalties, it isn't as much fun any more. I come down on the side of DVR the game and start watching a half hour or so later so you can zip the commercials. Mrs. Burgundy disagrees however and would rather cuss at all the commercials.

I would say the short version of all this is that the Steelers currently represent what their coach represents, good or bad.

Mike Tomlin is a "Politically Correct" kind of guy. He says the right things, he speaks well if less than emotionally. He's an "even keel" kind of guy.

That's pretty much what you get with your current Pittsburgh Steelers. With Cowher, you had a more emotional, seemingly vested group of guys. They were "heart" guys that you felt connected to. Guys like Porter and Smith and Ward and Bettis and young, sorta dumb Roethlisberger. Now they're all more "slick" and dare I say "evasive".

That's just my opinion. The team lacks some degree of emotive resonance, if you will. The needle is pointing down.

I also have less excitement watching Steeler games, too. I have it pinned down as to why.

1.) The NFL product in general. The amount of flags and commercials is repellent. I am just beat down. Even with the NFL Ticket, there are times when I can't find a game with live action even with 6 games to choose from. That is outrageous. It is intolerable.

2.) Faith in the Steelers, under this regime, in general. We will still have some fun, good games, where the Steelers seem talented, focused and play with energy, such as the KC game (and to a lesser extent, the Browns and Colts games, which were both terrible teams). But when they lost 4 straight, and with the repetition of obvious Tomlin gaffes, I just kind of don't believe in them at this point. I use this analogy often: If I play a decent amount of golf, and border on being somewhat proficient (I would not use the term "good" because I never attained that status), if I make a bad shot, I get upset. But when I know I am not very good (usually due to not playing enough) if I make a bad shot, I just laugh. as my expectations are lower.

That is how I am with watching the Steelers: If I think they got legit hope at winning a ring, I get upset at bad plays, calls or losses. The other side of the coin is, I also get more excited when they do well, because I think they have a legit shot at winning the SB. Two sides of the coin: get less upset at errors, but have far less excitement, or passion, if you will. I still enjoy watching a win, but to a much lesser degree. I also do not scream at the TV as I am in this state of apathy. If they start to get on a roll, and appear capable of winning it all, I will become more excited, as well as more upset from gaffes. But right now, I don't believe in these coaches. Leadership doesn't just occur naturally; it is a real element that doesn't show up to fill a void. At this point, I have little confidence that we have a staff to keep the team focused and prepared; they usually wait until they dig a hole, as they have already. At this point, I am just apathetic and dispassionate, as is the team, to some degree.

I don't think "even-keeled" has to mean "dispassionate." Noll was as even-keeled as you get, but you wouldn't have ever found his teams to lack effort or focus. Did you see the episode of "A Football Life" about him? It was extraordinary. As a matter of fact, history shows that both passionate and demonstrative coaches can succeed, but unemotional coaches can as well, which is what Noll was.

I can just about chalk it up to an unmotivated locker room. The Steelers meant something when they had players like Ward, Bettis, Polanalu etc. There was a pride in being a Steelers player and the fans felt it. I like Brown, Bell and Shazier but they don't have that same mystique as the previous group. All aside, the Steelers are really hampered down by the nfl's commercialism. Afterall the Steelers were the only team against the current CBA correct?

Open a few beers and cheers to whoopin the G-strings of new york

Part of that was a reflection of BC's in your face approach. These players need guiding and adjusting, as well as making changes as they are needed, opposed to waiting until it is painfully obvious before you make a change.

Until there is new coaching in place, you will see the roller coaster back n forth team that we have been seeing yearly.

Then don't watch and follow the team via box scores and highlights.
