Already on the roster: Vince Williams: The veteran is a lock to be the starting “Mike” linebacker. He was just re-signed and won’t be facing much competition. That leaves the “Will” (Shazier’s old spot) open. Mathew Thomas: Thomas, a UDFA, has been a pleasant surprise. He’s an athletic freak, and is one of the better, […]

Thinking this is the year they don't make a last minute final cut acquisition.

Only position I look twice is punter.

There is some UDFA potential at ILBer and OLBer. Not sure anyone out there could upgrade barring a major trade.

^^^ Very good article. I'd add the following, as the coaches will be shuffling guys in and out here based on situational football.

Williams is a good in the box run defender and an excellent blitzer, but weak in coverage and slower than most starting ILB's. Williams is not a true 3 down linebacker, he's more of a 2 down Linebacker unless they plan on blitzing with him out of the nickel formation on 3rd down. I do like his leadership and effort.

Thomas. Can play inside 3-4, nickel, or outside 4-3 ( In my opinion he's got classic strong side OLB skills too ). Our best coverage backer. Our fastest linebacker, and potentially our only 3 down linebacker, regardless of scheme. The fact that he was in coverage with the first string defense, shows the coaching staff see's his value. Thomas is the only guy I think could catch up to backs running wide or TE's without getting burned. Probably our best open-field tackler as well, though the sample size on him doing it is only three pre-season games. He's a little thin, but can add more muscle in the offseason. I'm very high on him and think Thomas has a good chance to be Colbert's next rookie free agent find.

Fort. Probably our 2nd best linebacker in coverage by default. Not an impactful type of tackler. Just okay on special teams. Edmunds might evolve into nickel LB as well, and if that happens he's in some trouble. If we only keep four inside linebackers, he could be the odd man out.

Matakevich. Mr. try hard is rock solid on special teams, and just okay vs the run. He's in on a lot of plays, but where he enters and makes the play is the problem for me as he's slow-footed and lacks explosion/change of direction not to mention he's small. Smart in coverage, but very limited in coverage responsibilities by no means should he be assigned to cover a back or tight end alone. Much better off in a zone type of coverage.

Bostic. Bostic looked poor in coverage. He's better than average type of athlete and can hit, but his consistency has been terrible, and often costly in coverage, missing a key tackle, or drawing a very long pass interference flag. If he doesn't start, his value bottom's out as he's not a coverage guy. Does he play special teams?

I think Thomas has a potential to be good coverage linebacker Coach. But it is perhaps a little premature to call him Steelers best coverage linebacker. I give Fort that label for now.

Seems to be a low bar, right now.

Yeah not much at the position that is coverage capable. Which is why I expect to see more S and less ILBer in certain packages.

I'm starting to think Bostic should get cut. I don't want to lose Big Red, Fort, or Thomas.

I think Bostic is a better run defender than Big Red or Fort. For me Big Red is no different than the Missile. Destined for just special teams play. I think Fort finds himself on the outside looking in.

I don't know Cope. I'm wondering what the "CAP" ramifications would be if said cut????

I think Bostic could be in on first down and running situations with Fort or Thomas substituting in coverage situations.
A platoon at least keeps bodies fresh. Teams might try to no huddle more often on us to prevent some substituting.

Bostic has played with the ones the whole pre season. I just can't see him getting cut. Metekavich has reached his ceiling as a defensive player. If you keep Thomas then it comes down to does Fort's situational potential as a backup exceed Metekavich's special teams ability. If so. Dirty Red gets cut. If not Fort is gone. You know what he is by now.

If I am weighing Fort to Dirty Red, with knowing my S's will play bigger coverage roles. I am letting Fort go knowing Red is the better special teamer.

I looked it up yesterday and Bostic is CHEAP. $1.5M, so not much savings, but then again, we're hanging a starting ILB position on a $1.5M ILB who's bounced around the league, so that isn't a locked position to me.

Slash, I agree the safeties are taking a larger role this year, but that might mean the Steelers only keep 4 ILBs and 5 S. If that's the case, which 3 do you keep since VW is a lock?:

Bostic, Dirty Red, Fort, Thomas

I'd feel much better if the Steelers went after Cushing or Bowman in free agency. Bowman has off-the-field issues and Cushing is injury prone. I still really don't feel comfortable when Vince Williams is the anchor at LB.

right now best coverage lb fort Thomas is still raw but should make the team and really push big red for a few snaps on game day subbing in for bostic in pure passing downs.

If they had faith in Fort, then why wasn't he next man up when Shazier and Matakevich were hurt? They signed Spence instead. I think Bostic will be the guy. Next season, who knows?
