DUI - Do You Take PJ Williams Off Your Board?

If everyone were honest with themselves; 80% of this board and I am being conservative at some point in their lives could have and should have been stopped for DUI. And in all seriousness, as dangerous as it can be, not every DUI is someone slobberingly drunk but just enough to have their motor functions and reaction times slowed a little bit. And we made it home just fine. Most DUI pull overs are BS, 6 times in my 41 years I have gone through a checkpoint or been pulled over at night because I didn't 100% stop at a stop sign or whatever crap they came up with. I was also a bouncer coming off work for a long time, with my dang work shirt on saying Security all over it the first question they asked was how much I had to drink that night. Point being, without being there to see for myself, the dude may have not even been over the presumed limit and still got a DUI. I won't let him slide up or down my board based on the same thing that happened to Hines Ward (oh, it happened AFTER his retirement....but did Hines have "character issues" because of a DUI?) but I would investigate his BAC, his behavior, etc. and let that influence me more.

Interesting stats regarding DUIs. Based on my time at the State Police Academy attending a class on DUIs, and career as a cop. Data may now be a bit dated. Nearly 90% of all accidents with fatalities involve a DUI. Of those previous mentioned fatalities more than 80% of them have a BAC level between .8 and 1.8, breath machine numbers. Those numbers are not that high and if you were not looking close you might not notice that individual was intoxicated. First thing that the individual loses when under the influence is their judgement, same thing that makes women look better at closing time. The annual death toll on our nations highways varies as a rule between 35,000 and 50,000 people, and that is a lot of people.

Many times folks can be stopped for a possible DUI examined and released to go on their way. Lots of times they get stopped and then arrested. I do agree with you that it is not a big deal if an isolated incident or a sign of immaturity that gets corrected. I would also say it could be a sign of dependance and warrants further examination to determine if it is a problem or nothing more than poor judgement.
