and if the KO blocking is ****, and it was, trying to make a return when you're six or more yards deep isnt helping matters.

which would be whose fault again?

which is why they would remove him. seems he has a **** ton of confidence, though, to try to bring one out from 6 ******* yards deep.

that or he's ******* stupid.

or a combination.

probably pressing....the KO return team was ****, though.

gee, ya think he'll get another chance, or do they cut him before camp?

executed. colombian neck tie style.

So we've established the kickoff return game was ****, yet we had the greatest offensive output in the history of the Steelers organization.

The metrics just don't back up caring about it nearly as much as our organization seems to. That's the whole point.

iirc, it was the special teams coach's fault. I think I remember reading that they told Archer to bring it out if he caught the ball 10 yards deep or less in the end zone. If I'm remembering correctly, that's piss poor coaching of a rookie who hasn't had the experience to determine if it's actually a good thing to bring it out. I mean 10 yards deep with a chance to at least get it to the 20 is a hell of a lot better than 10 yards deep and the other team is already at the 20 with a head of steam ready to tackle your skinny azz.

And, if I'm remembering correctly, that would also be Tomlin's fault for not stepping in having the ST Coach put some limits on that 10 yards deep or less mantra.

you're damn skippy tomlin is to shoulder some blame. Either in the "in-game coaching" facet, or in selecting archer in the 3rd rd in the first place

After the Cleveland loss, during his Tuesday press conference, Tomlin made a statement to the effect that Archer had a green light to bring it out from anywhere in the endzone. Just re-read a thread on another message board. One of the media members asked for clarification by saying even 10 yards deep? Tomlin answered in the affirmative. So, I guess he meant anywhere in the endzone. Piss poor thinking and terrible instructions to give to Archer. So,

Just saying it's physically impossible to bring a football out of the endzone 10 yards deep. The KR is out of bounds 10 yards deep.

The presser was Oct 14, you could go read the transcript. I understand what you're saying, but I didn't ask the question or provide the answer and truthfully didn't think about the dimensions when it was talked about. Capiche?

Well that could be why some of the stupid things on the special teams happened right there. It may have been done from a standpoint of lets just see what happens. The coaches may have been thinking that the extra length of the field might have resulted in gaps in the coverage due to the speed differential of some of the players and blocking. It did not work as planned. Unless they were making really stupid plans.

Now before everyone goes crazy about coaches trying stupid things out and saying that does not happen I'll share one of Chucks ideas that turned out to be pretty dumb in hind sight. Many years ago the steelers did a lot of running down hill so they could develop longer strides. The thinking of the time was the legs would be moving at the same speed so lengthen the strides and more distance would be covered in the same time, guys would be faster oh yeah. Well they did not try that one again as it did not seem to work. I am sure there are other humorous stories that can be told as well.

I think Cope was more focusing on the fact that the end zone being only 10 yards deep meant that if Archer was told he could bring it out from anywhere, even 10 yards deep, his body would have had to have been out of the end zone to receive the ball that deep. I'd imagine that neither the reporter who asked the question, nor Tomlin were being especially literal ... but who knows.

As far as being that deep and opening gaps in coverage, it would probably be a sound strategy if you had a veteran with Archer type speed back there. But to allow that type of leeway to a rookie who is struggling and maybe feeling the heat to break off a big return? Crazy. That kid is going to bring the ball out EVERY time. No matter what the coverage looks like or the possibility that he makes a good return. And it seems like that's pretty much what Archer did.

I'm pretty sure the kid was feeling the pressure to make a big play everytime he touched the ball.

If we draft a punter in round 4, I'm personally going to make sure the thread hits 100 pages.

Even if he's built like a linebacker?
