Here's the thing. The Steelers are deep at tackle now. Entering the season, when Hawkins went down early in training camp, our depth looked like ****. We didn't go out and get anyone. We drafted depth with Hubbard leaving in FA in Chukes. He's the extra tackle, and no one is taking that job from him. Hawkins was in line to be the swing tackle before his season ending injury.
Feiler was slated as interior line depth, and started off inactive with Finney ahead of him on the depth chart. Steelers tried Feiler out at tackle, in practice, and said holy ****, he can play there too. That's why Feiler is active all the time now. He can play all 5 line positions (though I don't ever want him at center, he sucks snapping). He was a tackle at Bloomsburg, and it's a natural position for him. Kudos to Munch for getting the most out of his players, as always.
So now the Steelers have a decision this offseason. Do they promote the depth they have with Hawkins, Feiler, Chuckes openly competing for Ben's blind side? Or do they keep Gilbert? Next year is Gilbert's last season under contract. If he's cut, he saves $5M and only accounts for $1.7M in dead money. It could be a money move to release him, with appropriate depth behind him?
But the Steelers have a lot of cap space next year, and hanging on to Gilbert to help Ben for one more year, may be worth the value of keeping him.
Foster though, I think will not be resigned. 33 year old linemen do not break the bank on final contracts, and if he's retained, I don't see it being for more than they already pay him. Age is a factor, and so is the fact that Finney can already play his position. It may be time to move on there.
