Do the coaches watch game film and study tendencies?

The last 3rd down play by the Chargers, you know where we had our slowest ILB on their best WR.
It was 3rd and 4 or 5, we use our base defense which is basically a run defense. The Chargers have never, zilch, zero, nein, nill, zip, not one ******* time run the ball on 3rd and 4 or 5, either one, this entire season.

If you watch that play, Bostic takes an inside screen position giving the WR a free release to the outside. Unless Davis ****** up his coverage, why in the **** Bostic gives a free release to the outside make no sense what so ever.

Absolutely, I'm 100% sure the opposing coaches watch this film and are licking their proverbial chops to get their receivers covered by our linebackers.

Another green light is when the Steelers only deploy just two defensive lineman. I'd run on that all day long.

If I could I'd give you a press pass for Tomlin's press conference.

Evidently not, they never adjust, just "keep doing what we do"

Philip Rivers targeted Allen 19 times. Nine of those times, according to the league's Next Gen Stats, a linebacker was the closest defender.

Again — not a random guy. Keenan Allen.

Cornerback Mike Hilton said that was the result of zone coverages. He called it "frustrating."

It seems like it would've been, yes. It couldn't have felt great to watch Allen, in his last act, slip by Jon Bostic for a 12-yard catch that took the Chargers from the 34-yard line to the 22 and set up Michael Badgley's third-time's-a-charm game-winning field goal.

"I think they kind of stuck with [their plan against Allen]," Rivers said.
"That is what this team does, they stick with what they do and they do it very well. Keenan is a tough cover in the slot and inside. I think the big thing wasn't that we were getting 25-yard chunks. It was the seven-, eight-, nine-yard gains."

I can’t stand the response of execution being the result of atrocious defense. If a player or players are not capable of executing something time after time, it’s time to adapt to something they actually can execute or try another player that can execute. Execution is not a reason, adjust to the players capabilities, that’s what good coaches do.

That is common sense 101. You adapt your scheme to the strengths and weaknesses of your players. Expecting players to meet a line that they physically cannot meet is ludicrous.

Tomlin's presser today he stated that "we ran out of smoke"...you can't make this ineptness up, it is glaringly obvious.

Ran out of smoke? There is no smoke and mirrors about this defense. The flawsand coaching mistakes are well know by the other teams.

Bend but don't break need not apply here. We are broken. Asking our Linebackers to cover their Receivers. A Pop Warner coach would know better. I might expect the Browns to do this. Unreal.

I hate to lose any game, but if losing to the Raiders means Mr. Cool Shady isshopping for sunglasses outside of Pittsburgh, and Munchak is the interim coach for the rest of the season, I'll take. With a few coaching adjustments and a culture change would make the Steelers better equipped to win in the playoffs.

You run out of "smoke and mirrors" and your solution is to but Bostic in the game to cover their #1 receiver? It would be funny if it wasn't so damn sad!

His exact quote was "we rely on smoke and mirrors, and we ran out of smoke...obviously"
Hahaha so basically, we're going to make you think we are actually going to cover your best wr with our ILB.
Chargers know, no team is that dumb, so they think it's a trick, but we'll really cover their best WR with an ILB.

Something like that?

I heard that **** too. More ridiculous crap coming from a totally clueless coach that continues to steer this team in the wrong direction. But hay, he wins during the regular season.

Who in the hell knows. Looked to me like we did the same thing we did every single game but Rivers was smart enough to take the short passes underneath and torch our LB's. Maybe the smoke was going back to 2DL in the second half...that will shock them, nobody has ever seen us do that before. SMH

The ONLY "smoke and mirrors" is the method CMVLT is using to keep his ******* JOB......!!!!

Salute the nation

That is horrifying!

The head coach admitted that neither he nor the DC can prepare a defense to deal with the Chargers, that they rely on ephemeral chance... I mean we all know that the defense isn't very good, but to come right out and tell the rest of the opponents for the season, "Ya, we can't play defense, we just throw up a front that looks like we have some ******* idea what we're doing... But really - just smoke and mirrors..."

What a frickin' tool.

He should wait to smoke up until after the game, like the rest of us.

He watches tape and is too stupid to analyze said tape. I imagine Tomlin stupidly staring with his bug eyes at a Russian movie with no subtitles. The moron is a way below the line thinker .

Tomin ran out of smoke. That's signature worthy.

Tomlin says he's not changing anything and refuses to acknowledge theres anything wrong with anything Steelers are doing in preparation

Fun facts, Ben has NEVER won against the Raiders at home, including last 3 games, against a 2-14 and two 4-12 teams

I’ll be pretty surprised if we win this weekend.

I think the game there in 2012, Ben was lights out but our defense blew a double digits lead in the 4th, or was that when Gradkowski came here with Oakland, or was it both haha

Later on in his press conference, he was asked specifically if he was able to get the matchups in coverage that he wanted. We of course already know the answer to that. “In some instances I didn’t, but that’s life”, he said. “It was no secret we were without Morgan Burnett and Cam Sutton, two of our core interior sub-package defenders”.

While the Steelers still played most of the game in their sub-packages, spending less time in their base defense than they had in the past two games facing the likes of Blake Bortles and Case Keenum at quarterback, it was clear that they were not able to run everything that they would have liked to due to the availability of their dime defenders.

“There was going to be some smoke-and-mirror play, if you will, and it was”, Tomlin said of his efforts to compensate, which featured a lot of L.J. Fort and other linebackers in coverage. “But when you’re playing a guy like Philip Rivers, who has bigtime autonomy at the line of scrimmage, sometimes you run out of smoke”.
