Did the Steelers Steal Mason Rudolph?

According to Alex Chippin, Buffalo if the trade to allow them to get Allen fell through they were to pick Rudolph.

Don’t know who the writer is, but several broadcasters have indicated Rudolph was late 1st/early 2nd prospect by a lot of teams (which means the teams already set at QB weren’t going to draft him anyway). Some had him rated higher then Jackson.

One thing for sure Philly absolutely killed Balt for that pick.

Yeah, I think a big time steal. I love this pick and feel much better about having a realistic plan and legit QB waiting and learning in the wings.
The Steelers were pro active planing the future and I’m all for it.

Does a player really get stolen????? EVERY team had 2+ chances to take him and didn't, WE DID. I for one am exstatic we got him and want to see how he pans out. If things go well he will have some time to adjust but his adjustment will be a HELL of a lot faster than Laundry Jone's. Jones has been on the roster how long?????? I think most here feel nervous when he has come in. I'm hoping Rudolf can tame those nerves and in this first training camp show enough to be #2 on the depth chart while Landry gets traded for a 4th. THANK YOU

I'd have been excited with him in the early 2nd(via trade up) so to get him in the mid 3rd is a really a steal and does indicate that our front office had him and the market properly evaluated. And yea, if NE had taken him in the 3rd, everyone would be jizzing.

Interesting you bring up Landry Jones...

The more I watch the tape and consider the conference he played in, as well as the type of offense OSU ran. as well as other similarities...
With all those things considered,,,how is Mason's game so much different than Landry's coming out of college?

They did come from similar offenses in college. The differences are in what they were asked to do/showed the ability to do within those offenses. Landry was more of a short/quick pass QB who relied on his receivers to rack up YAC. He wasn't asked to throw deep as often as Rudolph. In part because his deep ball accuracy sucked. So, when Landry hit the NFL, he was hesitant to "let 'er rip".
Rudolph can make those short throws that Landry could coming out of college. However, he was asked to, or took, more deep passes than Jones at the college level. He's not afraid to sling the rock and his deep ball accuracy is great.
Landry had (still has) issues with anticipating the throw (anticipating when/where his WR will gain separation and throwing to that spot before his receiver is there). This is a trait that Rudolph has and shows often in the film I saw of him on youtube.
I'm sure there are other differences that the talent evaluators on the site can give. These are a few that I read about and decided to go look at the film and see if I saw on film what the folks were talking about.

Edit: Want to give credit where credit is due. It was a post by Tape that had me go back and compare the film on the two of them. Thus, the ideas are Tape's. I just went back and looked at film to see/understand what he was talking about.

MY reasoning is two fold, SteelBuckeye sums up the college difference quite well but I'll add the part that I think Mason makes a little quicker decisions and is overall better rounded QB. PART 2 is the fact we have had Jones on the roster for awhile and he is as NFL ready as he is going to get. I say we trade him to recoup some of that value. Why not??? If Mason is showing the ability to be #2 we don't need Jones and a trade / 4-6rnd would be better than idle sitting costing us. Landry doesn't exude a lot of confidence and it's near time to move on as if Landry is the air apparent to BEN ROTHLESBERGER then we are in trouble. Besides, we may be able to trade him to cleveland for their 1st round pick.

Not too concerned if he was "stolen", as how many players were taken under the rug from the Steelers? Like it was already said, teams had two full rounds to pick him and didn't. They only moved up three spots, too. I'll be interested how this draft class of QBs pan out.
 
I am ecstatic we may finally have a competent, young QB who can learn the system, back up Ben (in case of injury), and hopefully be ready to take over when Ben decides to hang em up.

Can't wait to see Rudolph get on the field in the pre-season.
 
IMO a resounding yes....This dude is smart and studies like Peyton Manning....STOLE HIM

According to this publication, the Steelers had the #3 Heist of the draft.....(You will also notice the Steelers fleeced the Raiders at #35 as the publication said Martavius going to the Raiders was a bad business move for the Raiders)

"Look, I can't pretend to tell you whether Mason Rudolph is going to be a franchise quarterback. But the Steelers could have taken him at No. 28 and I wouldn't have had an issue with it. Who knows how much longer Ben Roethlisberger has, and Rudolph at least has potential to be their next long-term starter. And they paid next to nothing to move in front of the division-rival Bengals, who were seen as a darkhorse to take Lamar Jackson in Round 1 and had the next two picks after No. 76. Great move for Pittsburgh".

The numbers, Mason! What do they mean?!
 
A couple of thoughts about it:
1. If you really tore it apart there probably isnt much to give either way between Mason Rudolph and Baker Mayfield. Both would have perceived strengths and weaknesses. And I think you could probably make an arguement either way. Mayfield was first overall.
2. Any value issue with Edmunds is easily made up for by this pick.
3. His tumble to the third round was created by the circumstances not by a character issue or perceived issue with him physically. There just is only so many teams in the market for a qb between teams having franchise guys and hoping they have franchise guy. Or they were one of the five teams that took one in the first round.
3. The last team to take a qb stuck their neck out. They traded up to the first and took a chance on a very athletic guy. Traditionally that hasnt worked. Rudolph is a safer pick and with a third and a 7th there is little invested. He isnt what you hoped, bye. We draft one in the first.
 
Wonder if we'll hear 10 years down the road where he is the tops of that 2018 draft which was loaded with great qb talent like 1983, or if the guy is selling real estate. You just never know until he gets his chance.

One things for sure this guy has some big shoes to fill unlike Ben who was taking over after a carousel of mediocre to bad QBs dating all the way back to when #12 got hurt and eventually retired. Hell that first quarter after Tommy got hurt we all knew Ben was going to be the guy

Watching this ESPN special BEFORE the draft of Mason Rudolph with Russell Wilson for an hour. Dude is a leader, well thought out responses WAYYYY beyond his years. Is a student of QB's. Studies film and know what he is doing and why he is doing it...

If you have second thoughts about this pick see if you can catch this special. After watching it, I believe your perspective of this pick will be shaken to the core....At the very least you will wonder how the hell does someone so young have such a great handle on life and the position of quarterback. A very intelligent QB

The guy is a stud....
