Deshaun Watson anyone?

I think Watson's cap hit next season is 15 million, but same point we're not tying up 56 million up in the QB

Wow, I didn't crunch the numbers on Watson yet. I can't believe how affordable he is after signing a 4yr 156M contract extension. It's all back loaded. Houston also guaranteed $111M of it, so I don't know if they are on the hook for that amount if he is traded? I don't know if the guarantees are passed on to he next team?

Next year, if traded, he only costs $10M All prorated amounts ($27M) default back to the team that signed him (HOU).

So his numbers if we get him (not counting the signing bonus)
2021 $10M
2022 $35M
2023 $37M ($20M salary + $17M roster)
This ends the guaranteed portion of his contract
2024 $32M
2025 $32M

So to me, it doesn't look like they can move Watson until 2024. I just have to do some more research on guaranteed contracts for traded players.

The Steelers are on the hook for 25 million with Ben next year. They are not taking this on. And that is if he is cut.

I mean if he wants out badly enough, he can agree to void his own contract and pay back the prorated bonuses...
I don’t doubt he could get the same or better money elsewhere, but honestly this is the worse year to do that unless he wants to be a Patriot or not win for a half decade... and apparently both of those turn him off

The Texans cannot void his contract or cut him or whatever. They need to trade him for major draft capital. And if you are willing to pay that draft capital his numbers are not terrible. He is very reasonable next year. the 49ers are a possibility. They could move on from Jimmy G for free and actually go down in cap numbers next year with Watson. The Steelers are a total non starter in this debate. Not happening. Not a chance. He does have better stats than I expected, but frankly, I've never viewed the guy as a winner. When talent has been equal with the opponent, he loses.

Just a side note from this and I know a lot aren’t impressed with it, but it can make you really appreciate not having a below .500 season with Ben/Tomlin when Watson can have such a great year and the team is dreadful.

You give the kid a team (Steelers, Chiefs) - you'll see better results...

Oh i dont even remotely think wed have a shot at him regardless... I don’t believe Ben is retiring next year and Watson isn’t going to sit behind anyone... its a total shame what Obrien did there... never ever give a coach gm duties... it rarely works out and when it goes bad it sets you back way too far...

I'm not judging him on this season. I've seen him with good weapons and a good defense and he's been underwhelming in the win department. Pass. Might be a good fit for a team looking to win regular season games but I do not see him as a championship level qb.

If Ben plays like **** in the playoffs, I think he may consider retiring. At least I hope he does. I’m willing to suck for a couple years and then draft our own Mahomes...

We're not tying up 80M in one position next year, same reason why Wentz will not be here on a trade.

Houston also has to figure out a way to keep JJ happy or they may have to cut him...

If the Texans are rebuilding which it appear they are JJ Watt will not be a part of it. He is a 17 million savings no cost cut. I strongly feel he could be a part of a remortgaged , duct tape it together final Ben run. You got Highsmith being an up and coming player, you throw JJ in the mix a situational pass rusher at about 4 million for one season. He finishes with his brothers. Can't say it WILL happen, but guarantee it will be discussed the minute he is cut which I also guarantee.

I have a STRONG FEELING JJ Watt will be in Pittsburgh next year as well...

Those couple of years could easily become a couple of decades waiting for the next Mahomes.

**** Deshaun Watson. Why should he get a say in who the GM is? I can see him having input on the new HC but not the GM. What else, should he approve the peanut vendors too?

Houston played pretty much the whole season in catch up mode so i don't give a **** what meaningless stats he put up.

No thanks. I don't consider him a great QB, but he'll get paid like one, for sure. He would probably be pretty good at running for his life behind our line.

I love how the media trots out every sap QB available and collectively state that the Steelers should sign or trade for so and so.

But with an actually talented QB we get no mention...it's all about Belijerk and SF or the Dolphins (who already have a young starter in place)...but no mention of Pittsburgh...odd.

IN A HEARTBEAT I'd want Watson in Black and Gold!
It won't happen, but yes, to answer the original question.

If I read correctly, if Ben retires or Steelers cut him prior to 03/03/2021, he will count 22 million against the cap next year.
If Steelers keep him, they're on the hook for 42 million, unless they extend him again, kick the can down the road again, and keep us in cap hell.
