Defensive Gameplan against the Bengals

A little off topic, but when Tomlin leaves, it will take a few years to get rid of the trash - our huge collection of Swiss Army Knives - and rebuild. I just wish that process were starting today.

Add in the advantage of the multiple draft picks (12). Also the QB search could be delayed a year or two with the emergence of Will Howard.

Big mistake is to have Tomlin pick the QB and not develope (because his sub-coaching & him can’t) him into a productive measure, thus setting the franchise back 3 more years.

Can a fan become to familiar / know to much / see the future to clearly to remain a loyal fan ?

Whatever it is.....it has been going on for years and years. It is what it is until Tomlin leaves. And that could be a decade or more from now.

ADD in the time to UNDO the damage and try to return to the Steelers Way of doing things. that speed of return will be hinged upon the new coaching and his ability to take control back to the appropriate people / coaches / players.

Cam Haywerd has done a lot of damage during his “leadership” here. He has continually sent the wrong message and that takes awhile to reverse.

Players in general have been allowed to stray so far away that the chemistry is self-promotion instead of the team attitude needed, communication(s) show proof of that.

Well when you follow the team every single day, watch every game and get every little bit of information possible over decades,it paints a picture for us that others don't see.

I measure it against the elite standard they used to reach. It makes it very hard to get excited about the season at all. At some point I'm just going to turn it off completely.

Personnel and style are on Tomlin. Game plan, calls and adjustments are on Austin. Execution is on the players.

Last night was about Austin's inability to make adjustments more than anything, IMHO.
That would be true if Austin was really the DC and developed the game plans and could make adjustments.

That D is and has been 100% the product of MT.

I think you vastly underestimated Tomlin’s role and have over estimated the scapegoat’s role.

Austin sucks, no argument…like historically sucks! His past proves that for sure.
Tomlin definitely has him on a pretty short leash. Austin is just another in a long line of scapegoats to take the fall when Tomlin’s schemes/plans fail.

The one constant through several coordinators is nothing changes…that’s a pretty good sign that Tomlin is micromanaging the 💩 show and always driving the 🤡 car.

Make no mistake about it
This IS Tomlin’s D

PS: Tomlin’s record as a DC is pretty bad too, so it kinda sucks lacking any intelligence in the defensive scheme, gameplan, audibles, adjustments, etc.

The best offensive players since Ben left are a 41 year old QB, an overpaid WR you got on trade, and an UDFA RB
The 1 good weapon they drafted in the past 5 years was traded away.
Steelernation has been conned by Kahn
You can believe what you want, but the GP trade had all the hallmarks of a Mike Tomlin decision. He didn’t want a “hostage”.
Make no mistake, at this point Kahn is a GM in name only, he works for Tomlin.

I will watch every game I can for free, but I haven’t dropped a dime paying to watch any of them.
I haven't dropped a dime to watch them on tv in years. After Thursday night, I damn sure am not losing sleep again. They showed me all I needed to see. That absolutely nothing has changed.

I read somewhere that Chase said that the Steelers Defense did what they always do and exactly what the Bengals expected them to do. So how many players from opposing teams have said that or something similar? You think they’d change, but they never do. This Tampa 2 hybrid is all Tomlin knows. It’s all he’s ever going to allow. They had guys running open all night. Everywhere. Flacco had all day to throw. Their running game looked elite. Guess the Steelers defense just wasn’t communicating very well.

Yep. I remember watching that. He didn't tell us anything we didn't already know, some just choose to ignore it.

There's been a lot of talk like that over the years.

You should never wonder why the pats**** beat the **** out of the Steelers and knew everything on offense and defense.

Yes,those cheating ******* recorded all kinds of **** on the Steelers, but they NEVER changed a thing, even after knowing they'd been severely compromised. So it was easy for them.

I honestly think the NFL is half bullshit /half legit.

They are paying Watt 41 million. Highlight is well compensated. Heyward. Ramsey. They should make plays regardless of scheme. Why the hell pay them then? Quit making excuses for these guys.

Thats not some defense of the coaching. Don't take it as such.

Regardless of exactly how the blame should be distributed between the coaching and the players, the Steelers are now near the very bottom of the league in both 3rd down and passing defense.

Considering that, do you honestly think Tomlin is getting the most out of the defensive personnel on the roster?

I don't.

For years, he had two HOF-caliber players up front compensating for his suspect coverage schemes and insistence on using only 2 DL on first and second down.

Now that Watt and Heyward are slowing down, Tomlin's defensive coaching is being exposed, IMO.

No one is saying these guys don't need to produce. They do. However, no one should be naive to the fact that they're all older and slowing down. The defense needs a collective effort to be successful and not rely on the 2-3 superstars to play like superheros every week for the defense to work.

He is not. But I wonder if part of the problem is these players get so comfortable knowing all the rage is directed at Tomlin all the time. They just gotta win individually sometimes. And they do, but it seems like they disappear in those big spots. Thursday was a moment to put the Bengals away. It felt like a big moment...for October anyway.

I don't think the players know or care where any rage is directed. If they do, they would hear callers on the afternoon drive shows criticizing Heyward, Watt, and other highly paid defenders as well as Tomlin.

Had another GM ever been hired by the HC?

Shoes ya how much Art does and what a Tomlin boot licker he is. Those two clowns both need to go.

We will probably hit the same drought period in years from 1981-2005 for superbowls without even getting close.

We're already at 15 years since the last appearance and 17 years since the last win.

They're haven't been remotely close to elite championship level in a very long time.

That horseshit scheme they ran on defense Thursday night is a testament to the **** ing laziness of the coaching staff to change a damn thing.

I don't know if it's ego, arrogance, laziness or they're just tactical retards. Maybe all the above.
On short turnaround weeks against teams we recently faced, Tomlin seems to just recycle older stuff and basic gameplans... its why he is so bad at thursday night road games in the division. Pass protection is a lot harder on the road, so it helps his D a bit when they are the home team... but on the road, with predictable recycled stuff, they are at a huge disadvantage.

Tomlin is really really good at making a gameplan with more than a week between game, but not good on shorter weeks.. his record after byes, after Thursday games, and even on monday nights with just an extra day is magnificent..

Has TJ Watt or his brother JJ ever won a playoff game?

Tomlin is a coach of words and platitudes, but he’s clueless when it actually comes to in game adjustments or game plans.

They should have traded Watt last year and they never should have paid Heyward either.

This team is so ridiculously predictable it’s sad. I’m emotionally invested, but I’m trying to prepare myself that this team very well might only win 3-4 more games this season.

I’m not even emotionally invested anymore. I watch out of morbid curiosity, am pleasantly surprised if they win, unaffected by losses.

I know they have zero shot at a ring as long as Tomlin remains, saving my energy and emotion for the next regime.

What's his excuse for playoff gameplans?

I grew up watching a Steelers team in which the players made big plays in the biggest moments. And everybody, even a blind, Chinese peasant, knew Steelers were gonna run the trap, for example. They didn't fool anyone on defense, they just beat people. They had that as well in the 2000's runs. I'm am sick of this coach. But I am just as sick of big time players that don't make plays in big time a little moments. I wish they'd get a little more heat for it.
