Defense has no balls

We've discussed this many times before. The reason the defense blows is because Tomlin thinks he's some type of defensive guru. You can't play hybrid 3-4/4-3/2-4 and expect to do anything. There are certain things you need to play any defense. A true 3-4 needs a fireplug NT that needs to be double teamed. Without that a 3-4 is about as useful as **** on a boar hog. The 2 DL formation is a ******* joke. There is a reason why nobody else runs that stupid *** defense. You can't expect 2 DL to get pressure against 5... yes 5 OL. Ain't happening and I don't care who the 2 DL are because it doesn't matter. It's ******* stupid.

Tomlin's finger prints are all over this defense. He was the one that wanted LeBeau gone so he could implement his cover-2 bullshit and hybrid 2 DL garbage. I believe this defense set a record with allowing 9 TD passes in 2 games. Horrible.
100% spot on! We even ******* used the 2DL **** on 4th and 1, it's trash against the run and pretty much guarantees you won't get pressure. In the current NFL you need to get pressure up the middle quick.

Tomlin owns this. He wont admit it but it's his shitshow.

Perhaps, but they've done a pretty ****** job of drafting, it seems.

It's just pretty shocking how much the defense has regressed since the players from those Superbowl teams declined and moved on.

Heyward, Tuitt and Haden are probably the only players who would start on most other teams.

Ultimately, Tomlin and Colbert are the ones who have to own this ****.

And 2 of those 3 are MIA, they should be pillars on the trenches yet they are invisible

AND with only rushing so few, we still cant cover their receivers.

The defense isn't good, but I refuse to believe they should be this bad.

Face reality, they ARE that bad

They completely fell apart when Shazier got hurt, they have never recovered from that shock, they are a beaten group, with no pass rush whatsoever.

I'm sure there is a coach out there who can design a scheme that gets the defense in position before the snap unlike they are right now. The players haven't lived up to the draft billing, but the coaches are failing big time as well.

I'd rather them drop 11 into coverage than rush 2 DL. Seriously what the hell do you expect to happen? They could create the first 0-4-7 defense. It would be about as useful.

The real issue is that they don't see what's wrong with it. Let me help them:

1. It creates no pressure on the QB.
2. The offense can release the TEs and RBs into the pattern because they don't need them to block.
3. Because the TEs and RBs are running free they are matched up against dropping LBs who can't cover.
4. Because you only rush 2 the QB has literally (and I mean really literally) all ******* day to throw.

I can't think of a more stupidly ****** up defense to run. I guess rushing 1 would be worse? I guess?

Vader, you're hitting it out of the park. GREAT post and yes Tomlin has been doing this shittiizzle "D" for longer than he wants to admit. Dick L. Left and I actually think a couple of years before he left Cool Shades was tampering.

The 2DL set is ASSinine at best. Where did the coach that installs that set into a game get his coaching "pedigree"????

Salute the nation

**** even Flacco knows this defense sucks.

I can only assume its intent to suck. The blitzing did its job in Tampa, so let's stop. The quick passing game works all the time they use it ,so let's stop. Why? If your best chance to win is with those.

It makes zero sense. No shut down corners,no all pro safety, linebackers can't cover and the middle of the field is still wide open which it has been for over 5 years. That's scheme&talent.

The defense is leaderless, for sure, the problem is the schemes that people want require corners to actually be able to cover one on one, WE DONT HAVE ANY!!!!!!

The defensive backs coach we hired has no clue how to draft these guys either so we're stuck with the old schemes, hell 10 yd cushion zones might be the only thing that can keep us in games at all, go back to that, and hope somebody can make a tackle.

I never thought Hilton being out would cause so much trouble, but it does. He's the QB now on D, and he makes the plays. Hopefully he's back soon.

The things that are inexusable on this D are that we not only can't get lined up for plays, but we also can't get the right people on the field, or know who is supposed to be on the field. We had a 12 man penalty, and 3 other instances where we have a defender running off the field to avoid a 12 man. Then 4 more instances of players racing on the field to give us 11 men, but have no idea what the play is. This **** has to stop. The defense looks bad because it doesn't know what defense it is running. That is on the coaches. PERIOD.

This defense is incredibly young, fast, and athletic. With the proper coaching and scheme, there is no reason why they can't be a top 10 D.

So we have fast chickens running around with their heads cut off! Lol

As some have said before, we had a top offense and we fired the OC and a leaky D so we kept the DC, homers still havent explained that one to me, was that a Tomlin decision alone?

There are two ways to look at it. First, if Tomlin isn't involved then why not? He's been here longer than almost any other team's coach with the exception of Hoodie. Second, it is his decision and he is now in total control of the team.

I believe the second one. He wanted LeBeau gone so he could put more of his cover-2 imprint on the team. He started drafting players for that system while at the same type trying to use a half assed hybrid 3-4/2-4/4-3 defense. He's outsmarting himself... which isn't hard to do obviously. This is his 12th season as the head coach. If he isn't responsible for anything yet then he never will be.

Well they keep bringing guys in, maybe they hit the jackpot on the next James Harrison, you never know

Matthew Thomas insists he's prepared if needed to play significant role for Steelers this week

If Matthew Thomas is needed for a significant role on the Pittsburgh Steelers defense this week, the undrafted rookie linebacker insists he’s ready.

“I’ve been practicing a lot, studying a lot, getting to know what I’ve got to do,” Thomas said before practice. “So I felt pretty comfortable.”

Starting inside linebacker Vince Williams left Sunday night’s loss to Baltimore during the fourth quarter because of a hamstring injury. Though L.J. Fort filled in for Williams the remainder of that game, could Thomas be a more longer-term fill-in, if needed?

Coach Mike Tomlin didn’t shoot down that idea when asked about during his news conference Tuesday. Even before Williams’ injury, Thomas got first-team reps in practice last week and he was given ample opportunity to play during the preseason, including some snaps with the starters.

“I definitely feel like I belong (in the NFL),” Thomas said.

A five-star recruit out of high school and multiple-year starter at Florida State, Thomas has the pedigree and the raw athleticism to be an NFL linebacker. No linebacker at the February NFL combine jumped farther in the broad jump or vertical leap than Thomas; only three linebackers in the past 10 years have had a better vertical jump than Thomas’ 41.6-inch leap (two of them, coincidentally, are the Steelers’ Ryan Shazier and Bud Dupree).

Thomas ran the sixth-fastest 40 time (4.58) of the 27 linebackers who ran at the 2018 combine.

If Williams can’t play – and there’s no guarantee he can’t or won’t Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons – the Steelers options are Fort, Tyler Matakevich and Thomas. Thomas has the most athleticism of that group, but he also is by far the least experienced.

Thomas, though, said he has come a long way in regards to understanding the defense and knowing his assignments from where he was at the beginning of training camp.

“It’s a lot different; I understand more, I’m not just out there just (freelancing) anymore,” Thomas said. “I know what I’m doing assignment-wise and technique and all that. So I feel lot more confident.”

Thomas likely could have been a top-half-of-the-draft pick if not for some knocks against him. Thomas missed a college season because of academic ineligibility, and he also served a six-game suspension for violating team rules during his sophomore season.

Then there’s the critiques from scouts, summed up by this in his official NFL.com draft profile: “He doesn’t always play with a competitive demeanor.”

But Tomlin repeatedly leans on the mantra that he doesn’t care what players did before they arrived in Pittsburgh, only what they show here. And Thomas showed during training camp practices (he was a standout at Saint Vincent), in preseason games (team-high 25 tackles, sack, forced fumble) and in special teams during the regular season (two solo tackles) that he has potential as a playmaker that belies his undrafted status.

“It’s been very hard, just being underrated and trying to prove yourself,” Thomas said. “So that’s what I’m trying to do, use it as motivation.”

if your corners have trouble covering receivers, sitting back and rushing 3 or 4 is idiotic. Bring pressure and force quick decisions

flucco hates pressure so yeah let's sit back and let him make dinner before he has to choose which open receiver to throw to

If Samuel L Jackson was a Steeler fan, what might he say about the defense or the coaching staff? Coolie can be funny, so you lead off!

The defense playing poorly isn't about leadership, it's about talent and coaching. As Cope said, there's a lot of speed and athleticism on the defense, but this staff can't figure out how to use it. Talent wise, you have two outside linebackers with limited moves rushing the quarterback and they're weak up the middle at inside linebacker.

In theory, the 2 DL defense could work if the OLBs were good enough to hold up against the run and consistently beat offensive tackles in the passing game.

Watt and Dupree are just not cutting it, though I think Watt could be decent if he had a better player across from him.

Edge player remains a big need.

I don't see it working in any circumstance. The problem is that with just rushing 2 DL you have OL that can switch out and block the OLBs. I've never seen a 2 DL system work with anyone.
