Defense appreciation thread...

A big hole indeed, I am hoping for a dominate nose tackle as well.

We potentially have one of those ... Just have to find the key to unlocking that aggression/anger ... as it is Big Dan plays like you would imagine the guy from The Green Mile would .. "But boss, I just want to play .. I don't want to hurt nobody".

They were saying on ESPN that Eric Weddle has interest in becoming a Steeler. Maybe he will be our answer at safety next year.

Isn't Weddle like 30 yrs old? I'd welcome him in the short term; but I'd still like to see them draft a Safety to develop or in case of injury/fall off.

Yeah if big Dan ever steps up and realizes his potential watch out, this defense would be scary good.

Mike Mitchell has really looked a lot better this year IMO. The defense has really been looking good under Butler. Keep it up!

Yeah he is 30. Obviously not a long term but 3-4 years could be a possibility.

I am hopeful Big Dan is the guy... If he can to play to potential the D wont have to send as many guys after the QB, and will be alot better.

This D is getting consistent pressure and also getting sacks from our interior D-line as well as our OLB. It's great to see Butler being aggressive by blitzing the corners consistently. This has led to a rise in turnovers of which we were last in the league last year. Keep it up DEFENSE!!!! Once Ben gets back we can hopefully be one of the hottest teams going into the playoffs.
It's going to be a great challenge next week for this defense against John Brown, Larry Fitzgerald and the Carson Palmer led Cardinals....

Well, even a short term acquisition of a defender of Weddle's caliber would be a great move, as the Steelers need to continue to beef up the defense to complement the remaining years of that three-headed freak of nature they have on offense with Ben, Bell and Brown.

The D has holes, but it certainly earned the right to be called a defense and not an Efense anymore... late game leads are just not worth a damn anymore... I hope everyone realize that these days... last team with the ball wins

When you consider the Chargers were 4-14 on third down, and ran a total of 69 offensive plays, our defense could be a damn solid unit once Ben comes back and can sustain drives. I liked the aggressive play calling by Butler last night.

The way the defense stayed on the field the entire second half, they deserve credit for win not Vic as all the announcers crowned.

At the presser earlier this week Tomlin all but asked him to the prom. He raved about Weddle. I wouldn't be suprised if he is targeted in the off season.

Tuitt and especially Heyward are playing strong right now. This secondary needs help from the pass rush, and these guys are providing it. Although San Diego's line was in shambles last night...the well-balanced Cardinals will be a much more difficult challenge.

I wish they had some defensive line depth like they do at OLB. They played Moats, Dupree, Jones and Harrison and they were fresh all night. Heyward and Tuitt couldn't have played any overtime football they were gassed. Going for the win was probably a direct result of the fact that the defense wasn't going to be able to stop Rivers in overtime, IMO.

That's why you play to win on the road when you are being out played. If you get a TD late on the road to a superior opponent, you ALWAYS go for 2 to win outright. Better odds than going to OT with those ******* 'everybody gets a chance to score' rules...

Have to say the defense has stepped it up and they allowed us to stay in a game we had no business winning. Kudos to them.

I thought Mitchell had one of his better games for the Steelers last night. I think he is actually better suited to playing SS in Steelers system
and could be moved there next year. I believe they contemplated that move for this year.

I did see Mitchell call a few defensive audibles. There was one play where Rivers audibled early and Mitchell ran up to the DL and LBs and called a new play out. We snuffed out the next play, think it was a short screen pass. Definitely good to see him do that.

I agree 100% and lets just say for the sake of a debate that the missing 18 seconds wouldn't have been missing and Bell doesn't make it on 3rd down. The Steelers use their final timeout to stop the clock, I still go for the win on 4th down. Overtime would have been bad for the Steelers.

Really starting to get excited about this young Defense. We are finally getting back to being able to pressure QB's! 16 sacks through 5 games, we are 4th in the league in that stat.

Tomlin came here as a defensive guy. Because Lebeau had done such a great job, he was pretty much hands off, and let Dick do his thing. That's in the past now. Tomlin, and Butler put this defense together in the offseason, and I have to say, I like what I see. We may be a good safety away from being an elite defense again.

I also agree, except it would have been 2nd down.... ;)

Yea, I forgot that the Steelers had converted. Even still, I think they keep trying to score with the extra 18 seconds until they either score, time runs out or they turn it over. I don't believe OT was an option in Mike Tomlin's mind at all.

There hasn't been a QB yet that our front 7 didn't harass. Bud Dupree is special. Heyward and Tuitt are beasts.

The back end is coming together. Blake's pick and run came two plays after he was seriously burned. Once they get 100% in sync with this new zone, I see dominance in our future. No question our first round pick in 2016 will be a corner. Wouldn't even hate if we traded up for a top tier.

This D is young, talented, and improving week by week. If Shazier can get his body together, we are DEEP into the playoffs.
