DeAngelo Williams

The Front Office has done a pretty good job over the past couple of years with free agents given limited cap space. Beside Williams the Mitchell pickup is looking much better, Moats has been more than serviceable, Villanueva has been a pleasant surprise, and Cockrell and Boswell look like winners. Jury still out on Boykin but we'll see when he gets his chance.

Sometimes Running backs are best measured on injuries sustained. Williams spilt a lot of time with someone else in Carolina. He's not your typical 32-year-old running back.

His career rushing average of 4.8 is very impressive, and his career average as a pass catcher is 10.8

Now that he's on a better offense team, he's playing like a pro bowl back. Amazing free agent catch!

I understand all of that about Williams and his past and his career averages. However, there seem to be some comments in this thread alluding to Williams being the better alternative at RB or equally capable. Since their stats are similar to the point that another criteria must be used to differentiate the two, I went with age, with a 9 year difference you keep Williams where he's at (the backup) and when Bell is healthy he's the #1 RB. Williams could be the signing that keeps the Steelers in contention throughout this season, he's been great in relief and now he's #1 until the season ends, hopefully, in February.

I'm just glad Bell's contract is not up in 2016. This way, we can see if he can come back from two knee surgeries and steer clear of off the field issues. I'm thinking he'll be fine off the field, but two knee surgeries for a young back is troublesome.

Bell will be asking franchise type of money ( about 12 million a year ) in 2017 as a free agent. When healthy he's worth it, but the $64,000 question is can come back and stay healthy.

I don't know. It's a wait and see. Until then Williams is playing like a pro bowl back!

You trying to jinx the kid? Or did I miss a surgery in there? His injury last year didn't require surgery, iirc. Just rest and strengthening. It was a hyperextension and severe bone bruise with no structural (i.e. ligament) damage.
If I'm wrong, please let me know when this previous surgery occurred.

Edit: In regards to your statement about backs and injury history. Not trying to jinx Williams ... so, just google that information for yourself and you will see that we are blessed to have an injury free D-Will on our team this year. I hope that continues.

so what's up with DeAngelo's DeFoot?

Was walking without a limp today. Will know more tomorrow.

The way I see it, Williams is a better pure power runner and more of an asset near the goal line. He also is a little quicker and faster and is more likely to hit a longer play with the same blocking and hole. He's also more durable.

This is not to say he has Bell's soft hands to catch a football, or he can pass block as well as Bell can. Bell is very versatile. A true triple threat of a back who can run, block and catch.

History says otherwise.

I'm just glad we signed him at the right time of the year. If we had waited, who knows who we'd be praising right about now?????

DeAngelo Williams a full practice participant

After missing Wednesday’s practice due to a foot issue, Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams was a full participant Thursday.

That seems to have been in the plans. Neither Williams nor Steelers coach Mike Tomlin expressed much concern about the issue earlier in the week, but the Steelers need Williams because they have no proven backs behind him. Jordan Todman has two carries this season, and Isaiah Pead was just added last week.

The Browns have the league’s lowest-ranked run defense, so a healthy Williams could have a big day Sunday.

As expected, both the Browns and Steelers listed their No. 1 quarterbacks — Josh McCown and Ben Roethlisberger — as limited participants Thursday. Roethlisberger practiced Thursday after sitting out Wednesday.
