Yes grading the draft is stupid...but here we go

but since we only care about the Steelers grade...here you go

Pittsburgh Steelers
Draft pick: Michigan LB Devin Bush (No. 10 overall)
Day 1 grade: A-
Draft analysis: I was so happy to see two inside linebackers go in the top 10 picks. Bush is worthy of that investment, as he moves like a safety and pounds ball-carriers with impunity. The picks they parted with to move up in the deal with the Broncos -- Pittsburgh sent them a 2019 second-round pick (No. 52) and 2020 third-rounder -- isn't a ridiculous price to pay, but the Steelers could have found a much-needed corner had they stayed at No. 20 and a starting inside 'backer in the second round (or later).

It's totally worth it. We got the impact player we wanted instead of having to settle (see Artie Burns and Edmunds).
 
Let me see what happens tonight. My concern is that many blue-chip players go off the board between exactly #52 and #65, so if we don't get good value at #66, all is lost and I'm trashing mother's basement.

I always grade drafts before they take place. That way, I am not biased.

I gave the Steelers an A+ about two weeks ago. No reason to change now.

Yeah some of that becomes fantasy. Like saying well they should get a TE in the third. I don't know. Is there a TE draft worthy at that region of the draft that is better than Grimbal? You have to draft an alleged linebacker, better than Vinnie, Barron and Bostic after the first round. That may not actually be there.
 
This is a very deep draft. Most of the draft was focused on defense in round 1. That leaves a lot out there for offense. We have clear needs at WR where we have historically drafted very well, TE which is a backup or depth position need, OT which is also a backup or depth need, RB which has been proven can be taken anywhere in the draft or even as an undrafted free agent and then we go back to our defense and see we may want more help in the secondary. The real question is whether they view Nelson as a starter opposite of Haden. If they view him as a starter then everyone clamoring for another corner might be left disappointed.

For me with the secondary, we need someone behind Haden because he has been injury prone at times. We have drafted very poorly in regards to the secondary recently. I hope they can figure that out eventually because we can't afford to miss on our picks this draft. These guys will be there for Ben's last couple of seasons and our window to win is right now. Once Ben is gone, this will be a painful transition until we find another QB

aren't there always higher expectations based on how high a guy is drafted or how much he gets paid? How often do the steelers draft in the top 10? There should be a ton of expectations on Bush because he does have high upside and he cost a ton to acquire.

Bud Dupree has been disappointing but if he was a 3rd rounder, he'd probably already be re-signed as a quality depth player. But he was a 1st round pick and has not met the potential so most see him as either a bust or at least a disappointment.

Why would the same level of expectation not apply to Bush?

Great post. Ben was drafted in the 11th spot. So he better be a great ILB.
