Dawson sings Pouncey's praises

Dermontti Dawson redefined the way center is played in the National Football League, and that is one of the reasons he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was the first at the position who was able to pull, and it's something others have emulated.

Dawson, who played his entire career with the Steelers, is a fan of the team these days and enjoys watching them play. Dawson recently shared his thoughts on the 2016 Steelers, including giving his take on center Maurkice Pouncey.

On center Maurkice Pouncey bringing stability to the position:
"At the center position it's key. Continuity, you have to have the continuity. Maurkice is the keystone of the offensive line. He is making all the calls. He is a phenomenal athlete. He has the makings of being a great center as well. Hopefully if he stays healthy it will be unlimited what he can do and the team as well as a whole."

On the importance of Pouncey's leadership:
"I learned from Mike Webster and I attribute a lot of my success to Mike and watching him and how he prepared as a professional. I tried to emulate what Mike did. For Maurkice that is paramount. He is a leader. Guys follow guys who are accountable and play up to a certain level. That is what he is doing. That is bringing up all of the other guys play as well. He is a key for the success of the offensive line."

On continuity on the offensive line:
"It's everything for offensive line play. Sometimes when you have guys who are injured and somebody new comes in to play, it's not the same. You get used to the guy playing next to you. The longer you get used to the guy playing next to you it's almost like an unsaid thing. You know what he is thinking."

On the 2016 offense:
"I think if one of the other receivers becomes a threat and gives Antonio (Brown) more freedom, and there is consistency in the running game, it's going to open it up for Ben (Roethlisberger). We have to protect Ben as well, protect his blind side. I think those guys will be decent this year. They have all of the components, they just have to put them together and be a cohesive group. Consistency is the key."

On quarterback Ben Roethlisberger:
"Ben is one of the best. I love seeing him play. Ben just don't run as much. Slow it down a little bit. He is a phenomenal quarterback when it comes to running the offense and throwing the ball."

Who cares what a hall of fame center says when we have a guy here who played and coached and watches film who says he is replaceable. MEH

Unpossible.

Pouncey is a detriment to the team and a thug - he's always injured - he has too many tattoos - he was an SEC student - he's from Florida - he was friends w/ a now convict...

Did I miss anything that the haters will mention???

What did you expect him to say "pouncey sucks". Plus he did not really say he was great. He said he has the makings of a great center. We will see how pouncey does this year I am not sold on him yet

When unluckily another Football player is not falling on his legs

It's unfortunate as to how his most recent injury happened. BOTTOM line is if you are not on the field, you are not making an impact. I want the best for him and HOPE he goes all APE **** on his blocking assignments. Want him to be unanimously voted ALL PRO. To do that, you must be on the field of play. Duce Staily got voted sweat pants all pro, I just want MP to avoid that type of recognition.

It's nice when our 2nd best center who was mentored by our best center is singing the praises of our third best center.

I'm cool with that!

Unfortunately I think that's how all his injuries happened

And I understand what you are saying. But I find it hard to blame the player for injuries like that. Injuries cause you're not in shape ok. But Pouncey's injuries were all football related. And you get hurt playing this game

It's true. You can get hurt playing the game.

That's a simple truth of Foosball. Whether or not Maurkice Pouncey will ever be a great center will pretty much depend on whether or not he can stay on the field for an extended number of seasons. It's kinda harsh and unfair, but potential is unrealized productivity.

Why do you say "haters" as in plural, when you are talking about 1 person?

he's an amazing and impactful player when he's on the field.

when......

Dawson is dirt broke. While it's nice to hear a former player say these things, I wonder if he's angling for a job...any job with the Steelers.

BLAME or DON"T blame......... You aren't good if you can't contribute, THUS the must be on the field of play comment. I know he didn't injure himself but he was still injured, keeping him off the field of contribution. I want him to be VERY productive and LIVE UP to some's expectations. Until then, he needs to remain on the field of play.

What's the over/under on when Pouncey will suffer a serious injury this year. I say he makes it to game 6, which would be one of his longest years.

When people aren't falling into his legs and injuring him, he's one of the best in the game. Hope he can stay healthy and dominate the middle. The difference between Pouncey and what's behind him is huge

Is he? Maurkice Pouncey's best season was his first. Yeah, he can pull and block well on the second level, but he's not a great in-line blocker or anchor. I took a look at some football magazines that rank players. Our guy is not top five. One said #13 if memory serves.

His cap # is $10,551,000 for the season. Oh how I wish I could have used that money in free agency on a DB or pass rusher.

1. MAURKICE POUNCEY, PITTSBURGH STEELERS
Generally considered the best center in the game today, Pouncey is equally effective in run and pass blocking. While judging centers (or offensive line play) is a risky proposition, the Steelers were the No. 2 offense in the NFL last year with a well-balanced attack of weapons at quarterback, running back and receiver.

Of course didn't play in 2015 which is why he isn't on your list coach

Pouncey's best year was 2 years ago. It helped the Steelers break every franchise yardage record up to that point.
