David Johnson signs one year deal

I don't get the signing.

We need a corner and a S.

We needed someone very adept at missing crucial blocks at crucial times in Super Bowls. Problem solved.

I NEVER understood their man crush for this guy. He sucks as a blocker, but makes up for that with bad hands and flexibility. What exactly does he add to this roster? I didn't realize it to just now, but we lost Will Johnson to the Giants. Do we still have Nix? I want a real FB, not this H-back nonsense.

Nix is still here, he's the present and future of the FB position for the Steelers

Johnson at this stage in his career is nothing more than a camp body. You have Green & James locked in as TE 1 & 2, and Roosevelt Nix as the clear cut FB. Again, why rail against a signing which is simply adding depth and competition to the roster in mid May? Colbert knows exactly what he's doing with these types of low risk signings. Adding someone familiar with the Steelers system who can push a few guys in camp. That's exactly what you'd hope the FO would be doing this time of year.

Championship!

Actually, I wish they would sign guys who have a POSSIBLE higher ceiling so we could get lucky a few more times. DJ is a known, crappy entity with no upside. I'd like to see more guys signed like Alejandro - raw, but with potential.

POP, how much more upside do you want? The Steelers drafted their rookies with high ceilings -- Burns, Davis, Hargrave et al.

We have plenty of young - unproven - guys with upside. DJ in the TE/FB room adds a much needed veteran voice. Heath Miller is not around, Matt Spaeth is hanging on by a toenail. A vet like D. Johnson could be huge for that room. Much like DBH with the WR's or DeAngelo paired with LeVeon. Adding Ryan Harris to the Oline and Ricardo Matthews to the Dline. This is Colbert 101, aiming for a nice mix of young & old. Gradkowski was that type of signing with Landry Jones waiting in the wings. Deebo and Moats mixed in with Jarvis & Dupree.

If you pay close enough attention you'll notice Colbert's deliberate and methodical ways.

DJ is a guy the Steelers drafted and brought into the fold years on end. No surprise they'd sign him back at this point.

I'll be honest, I can't stop hating DJ after all his whiffs and lack of any athletic skill, nevermind the SB **** up. I still bet that mendenhall wouldn't have fumbled if DJ had done his job

Litos, believe me I'm no David Johnson fan. My post above was just me trying to make sense of it all. Kind of wierd they'd let Will Johnson go then all the sudden re-sign David Johnson. I was good and done with DJ when the Chargers signed him.

I guess is both monetary and playing time reasos for WJ to leave, the FO knew they had a cheaper and probably better substitute in Nix and WJ deserved to test the market for an opportunity to be an everyday contributor on another team, while also getting more than vet minimun

Maybe, he has gotten better, was initially under-whelmed by this signing but as a camp body or 3rd string guy if something is wrong with Spaeth he might have value.

Wonder if they're going to bring in Peggy Finegan too

He does his job, we're talking about going for out 8th ring this year, not our 7th. I'll hate that ******* **** till the day I, or he, dies.

CAMP BODY. Easy friendly contract made for "cutting" when needed. He is competition and possible insurance upon injury. Simple as that.

Salute the nation

And there you have it...I forgot about "David" and was hoping this was a "Will" Johnson re-signing...oh well...

David Johnson is a known commodity with limited upside. Nix was impressive as a lead blocker and special teams player as a the FB. Johnson didn't offer much as a TE. I'd rather take a chance with an upside younger player. Unless there's is something wrong with Nix or the #2 or #3 TE this move doesn't make a lot of sense.

I believe they cut a guy named Reeve to make room; Did he have more upside?

We already know DJ's ceiling, and it is low. I'd prefer to sign a guy who MIGHT have a chance to develop into a good player; we know what DJ can do, i.e. not much of anything.
