Ok fine, i will buy a 10+ year vet might have serious head injuries, but Aaron hernendez played 3 years... 38 total games and had late stage severe CTE... isnt it time that we acknowledge college and high school football before the age of 21 is where most of this happens...

He was listed one time as having a concussions with the *'s.

He played 44 games, 3 years in NE and then he played 3 years in college at Florida.

I would suspect you are correct

They found CTE in high schoolers already. It's a rough game.

Want to reduce the cases of CTE and up the allure of the NFL? Take off the helmets. Reduce the temptation of using the helmet as a missile and force players to hit with their shoulders.
I'm not saying don't wear head protection, I'm saying maybe rugby style head gear and shoulder pads.
If not, they get paid a whole **** ton of money! There is always that.

just take off the facemask. can leave the helmet on.

In my opinion, awboatguy is 100% correct. Take away the helmets and CTE disappears.

That doesn't happen no matter how many times people say it... these are many of the same morons who do helmetless head butts for celebration on the sidelines... make the helmets tops cushy and non aerodynamic perhaps... non weapon helmets might stop them from that

It's a collision sport with head trauma. Much like boxing or mma. The trade off is fame and fortune. This stuff will always be. Time to invest in better helmets and make them cost available to kids on up. It's that or the sports going to turn into flag football. For every guy I see jacked up I see a bunch who are not who brought the wood for years. I think offensive and defensive linemen have the biggest risk. Every single snap of the ball is a collision. They have to get them into energy absorbing equipment that will minimize impact to the brain.

I mean the reality is kids won't be allowed to play tackle football till they are 18+... i know it sucks but younger age head trauma is the driving force in this thing... older doderheads really don't do as much damage once the brain is developed... as soon as the NFL money train drus up people are going tgere eventually... might wipe out college ball first though

I have often wondered if a contributing factor to CTE is the amount of performance enhancing drugs these guys are using. Could some of that be a factor? I don't think the NFL for one minute wants to go there.

However, if there is one thing society does today is make excuses for people acting like idiots. Aaron Hernandez was an idiot with or without CTE. Don't lose sight of that.

No doubt... and his gang lifestyle leading into the NFL probably added a lot to whatever damage he did to himself too... i just thing sigling out the nfl and suing them is a cop out money grab

It comes with the territory of the sport. Common sense will tell you what you're signing up for.
Angry groups need to point fingers at someone when stuff goes bad. This is all we are seeing and people are more vocal about the aftermath of the sport.

I played two physical sports in high school.
I was a free safety in football and a right winger/defenseman in hockey.

I have right shoulder and left knee flare ups on occassion.
But I knew what I was getting into. Cannot and do not have a right to say football or hockey is to blame.
Now insert an angry person in my shoes who is quick to blame the coaches, sports, society etc.

*sigh*
Just cannot please people and there is no common sense anymore

Eh. I think CTE is brain damage no doubt.
PED's imo are just a really bad hormonal response, which in turn does correlate and aggrevate the existing anger/depression involved with CTE

No doubt getting smacked in the head constantly can not be good for you, but how many regular brains do they actually look at? Do non-athletes have CTE at all? Hernandez was only 27 and had late stage CTE. How can he be so young and have it be so advanced? I believe there are many factors at work than just football.

Spot on. You know exactly what you're signing up for and like the others above said it's a money grab. The older generation NFL players are pissed at what the players nowadays get. They made **** in comparison. That's just the way it is when your business grows massive.

And then we have skull fractures and insane lacerations, which is why helmets were used in the first place.

A lot of it happens in high school. Back in the day, our coaches response when you got obliterated and were stumbling around trying to overcome the dizziness and stand up was, "Get up and run it again!" Rinse and repeat about 10 times a day. When I was a 140 pound Sophomore, they used to put me in the scout team D at LB (I was a WR/DB) and they would have the first team offense run a power run play where the Tackle....who outweighed me by 100 pounds...would come around the end and launch me as far through the air as humanly possible. My job was to "fill the hole" and get destroyed. They would run that play 15 or 20 times in a row. Hell, I wouldn't know where the **** I was after the 3rd time. "Run it again!" I still hear that in my sleep. It was like that every day during the Summer 2 a-days.

It was the coaches way of making the underclassmen tough, mean and pissed off......and assured that when they become Juniors and Seniors they are salivating to destroy the Underclassmen at every opportunity to return the favor for all the **** they had to eat when they were in that position. Different times.....right or wrong. That's the way it was. .

There's an agenda at play here. Why does nobody give a **** that soccer has more concussions than football?

Playing without a helmet or face mask wouldn't work. The game is too fast compared to back in the day. Players will get a knee or shoulder to the head. Also, they've played with a helmet their whole career. It would be hard to change certain instincts immediately.

The change needs to come in youth sports. Some of theses players have been playing full contact since they were 7 or 8 years old.

Also, you don't need to hit your head at all to get concussions or head trauma, you only need to reverse your direction so your brain slams against the inside of your skull. Remember the blocking sleds? Each time you hit it correctly, your brain should slosh. Each time you are running full speed and you get met by someone going the opposite direction and your body stops immediately: Your brain hits the front of your skull.

Head trauma is the best way to get a concussion, sudden stops is the best way to get CTE.
