Cowboys Offered First Round Pick to Steelers

Not true, no way. I think Jerry probably offered his second and a third. That's it.

Well. I don't know if this is true but when your secondary is your Achilles (popular consensus) preventing your team from getting deeper in the playoffs, and the player you want to draft is waiting for his name to be called, you have to use your pick on that guy. Those are the risks you have to take.

I think you meant to say that it's the "world consensus."

This news makes me vomit...if remotely true.

Long time observer, but never post much.

In Peter King's MMQB article, there was a big section on the Dallas war room trying to trade up to get Paxton Lynch. They were trying to trade up to the 24 to 28 pick. It says all teams got called, including Pittsburgh and then it goes on to say:

The Chiefs called. Said they’d trade from 28 to 34 but only if Dallas included its three, not the four. No dice. Bengals picked cornerback William Jackson III. Steelers up. Pittsburgh never considered trading at No. 25 and made a pick quickly: cornerback Artie Burns.

If Cowboys were offering next year's first, wished the Steelers would have taken that, but whatever the Cowboys were offering, Steelers didn't seem interested.

I heard on one of the radio shows yesterday the Browns were desperate to get back into the first round and offered Pittsburgh the rest of their available draft picks (#32, #65, #77, #99, #141, #176, #223) as well as next year's 1st and 2nd round picks along with OT Joe Thomas, DT Danny Shelton and CB Joe Haden. Supposedly, Colbert hung up the phone saying, 'Artie Burns is our guy, we will pick him at #25, come hell or high water.'

The sad thing is I could see this being closer to the truth than Tombert actually listening to a trade offer.

the sadder thing is, someone will believe Tibs' post and this will be debated for months.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was disappointed that his team was unable to trade up and draft Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch, reports Peter King of Sports Illustrated.

According to King, the Cowboys attempted to swap picks with the Seattle Seahawks to move up to the No. 26 spot and take Lynch, but would not meet Seattle’s asking price of a second- and third-round pick. Dallas instead offered a second- and fourth-round pick for the chance to grab Lynch.

The Seahawks eventually traded the pick to the Denver Broncos, who drafted Lynch.

“I’m not gonna go jump from Dallas’s tallest, so let’s put this in perspective,” Jones said the next day. “And I live with second-guessing and disappointments. That’s a part of this business. But if I had to do it all over again? I’d give the three.”

No way that rumor from David Todd is true. Jones already said he regretted not moving up and knows he should have overpaid.

Oh, and lest ye forget...

Berm, you're the animal house kevin bacon to us panicked masses after another Steeler draft:asd:

Yeah from everything I hear now, it was just a second and a third to get the first this year they were shopping around, not a second and next years first... but still it doesnt matter, the Steelers dont trade out of the first

i don't know what may have been offered but it's clear that the steelers cut themselves out of discussions by turning in the card that quickly. If they are that sold on a player then i can see turning in the card quickly. But i find it hard to believe that nearly every year, the steelers are drafting their dream prospect so there is no need for any discussion.

I agree, but that was a pretty big drop and if they wanted to get a top corner, then it's a risk. It's clear they had Burns up with the top group of corners and didn't value Alexander nearly as much.

Jarvis was a "run to the podium" guy. They absolutely loved him. Hood too.

"We really really really like him" doesn't mean a thing to me. First-rounders bust half the time, even when the GM says he loves the guy. Play the odds and stockpile early picks.

I'll say this again - not one of us get paid for our analysis or input in drafting players or making decisions or choices for the Steelers during the Draft. That being said, sit back, relax, and let's see how this all pans out - you might just be pleasantly surprised...

Lack of debate is the death of internet message boards. I encourage all members to express their opinions.

It should be welcomed by all. Celebrated and encouraged. Never discouraged.

except for Elfie. **** that guy/girl/it

I would of passed too. Dallas will be good and that will be a low first round pick..

Dallas will be picking before pick #25 next year. The defense is terrible and Romo is injury prone. So I'll take two #1's picks, over our pick #25. Moron move by Colbert . Should have done it We could have taken Howard, who is more proven than Burns, and a safer pick even if he lacked the top-end upside.

damn you, Tibs. just damn you.

I think the cowboys will be in the playoffs next year. Their division is not that good. Elliot and that offensive line will be a major issue for teams. Keeping that defense on the sidelines

Sounds like a brilliant idea. Too bad we have Colbert, and not you, calling the shots.

Well, Howard isn't a weak tackler and has two good years of production. Burns only had one.

Very few corners are NFL ready out of the gate. Bruns is ever rawer if you want the facts.

" He used his NFL-sized frame to make 93 tackles as well as led the team in interceptions (four in 2014, five in 2015) and pass breakups (13, 10) in both years " -Howard.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/xavien-howard?id=2555539

PRO DAY RESULTS for Howard.
40-yard dash: 4.41 seconds
Vertical: 38 1/2 inches
Broad jump: 10 feet, 5 inches
3-cone: 6.94 seconds

Pro day and combine results for Burns
40-yard dash: 4.46
Short shuttle: 4.3 seconds
3-cone: 6.96 seconds
Vertical: 33 inches
Broad: 10 feet, 4 inches
Bench: 7 reps of 225 pounds

>>>So Howard has better production and work out numbers. I'm not saying he will be better than Burns. I will say they went close enough to each other int he draft and if I can get a first round pick for moving down a few spots and taking Howard, I'm doing it.

Coach, at the end of the day all that matters (to me, at least) is that the Steelers' eval had Burns and WJIII neck and neck with almost identical first round grades. A beat reporter from the paper that shall remain unnamed confirmed that in a chat yesterday. Overall, they had WJIII ahead of Burns by just a hair. In certain areas they liked Burns better, in other areas it was WJIII. Given the choice, they would have picked WJIII, but the two players were so close that it didn't matter to them. It was a draw. They knew they would get one or the other. That's why they didn't hesitate when WJIII went off the board, they knew who they were going to pick in an instant. Since it didn't occur to them for even a millisecond to not make the pick, that tells me the other corners - like Xavien Howard - were nowhere near the rankings they had for Burns/WJIII. They wanted a top-notch corner, they got a top-notch corner. We've been bitching for years about the Steelers settling for middling talent, they finally step up to the plate and grab a blue chip corner... and we're still bitching.
