May still have a life line as a Steeler yet.

Steelers have asked cornerback Cortez Allen to take a pay reduction, according to a source. Allen is due $4.4...

He'd be stupid not to take it.

I think it's a play to save some money and keep the guy as a back up, but if he stands firm they will release him.

I have had so much hopes for him... if you get one more chance with the Steelers don't break my heart again Cortez

I'm hoping he takes the deal and proves himself worthy of being a starter again. He has all the physical tools, I just think he totally lost confidence and injuries haven't helped him any.

Unless he takes at least a 50% pay cut, they have to release him. He's not worth having on the team.

Allen showed a lot of promise early in his career, consistently getting his hands on passes and preventing big plays, but the injuries hit in 2013 and in 2014, he lost his confidence when he was flagged like a million times in the preseason amid the leagues new emphasis on illegal contact, and then he got injured several more times.

I'd love to see him re-discover the skills he showed in 2011, 2012, and the second half of 2013, but, from a football perspective, I think his mind and body are shot.

Pay reduction so we can cut him later. Cool with me

Allen has the physical tools you love, but just don't know if he has the mental makeup. Is it worth taking one more shot with him? Maybe, but I am not holding my breath.

If he takes a cut, I'll be happy to have him in camp instead of Blake and let him fight for a roster spot...one last chance to prove if he is worth anything after all the time and money invested in him.

Hmmm. We all knew this was going to happen sooner or later. Any word on when's the deadline for an answer from Cortez Allen back to the Steelers Front Office?

After what he has, or more accurately, hasn't done since signing his big contract I think he should take league minimum with some playing time and production incentives that can give a few million of that back if he has a good season.

If he takes the pay cut, can they try him at safety?

If his base pay is pushed down to league min along with the bonus money he is owed he is still probably overpaid given his production. From his point of view why would the pay cut make sense when he can get the bonus money anyway and probably more bonus from another team for signing what would be more than a min deal? If he takes the significant cut he obviously wants to play for a relevant team, take the cut Cortez- prove your worth and earn a new deal.

Can he play safety, he's alot better when he doesn't have to turn his back to the ball.

I think Blake shows more promise and has continued to get better. I'm he's the next gay, he will continue to grow and go from the "ohh no not him" too he's one of our best.

Except gay had good technique for a slot guy and could tackle well even his first few seasons.. He only struggled vs big fast TEs until he moved outside... Then it was a learning curve... Blake is abysmal in several areas and has been for a while. They play him cause he hits... He isn't getting better. If anything year 2 here he got much worse especially in tackling.

blake could provide security to other team's offensive players and escort them to the end zone to ensure they're not being touched.

I don't understand if they are still interested in him, why did they write him off for the entire season? Why not give him a shot during the season to prove he still belongs.

The problem with Cortez is, as a cornerback, once your confidence is shot, you're good as done. No matter what physical tools he has - height, speed, jumping ability - it's worth squat if his mind's not right. Something happened to Allen that left a mark on his soul. Be it getting burned time and time again, the fact he got benched, the various lingering injuries, the coaches not allowing him to get back on the field. It's probably a culmination of all these. Whatever the case, he's damaged goods at this point. A change of scenery might help him, but I wouldn't bet on it. Too bad for him - and us - as he always seemed like a good kid with strong character.

Wasn't Cortez on IR?

Wasn't Cortez on IR?
He was placed on IR, then gave a mysterious locker room interview where he basically rolled his eyes, sighed several times, hemmed and hawed, couldn't answer the question on what his injury was or why he thought they put him on IR. So that was pretty strange, on several fronts.

Here's the story, from back in October:

NFL teams are required to list participation reports after three practices leading into each week’s game. Steelers cornerback Cortez Allen has been listed as a full participant far less often than he’s been listed as having been limited, according to Tribune Review reporter Chris Adamski. Officially, he’s listed as having a knee injury, the same one he got during the Steelers’ Week 1 loss to the Patriots.

It’s peculiar that he’s bounced between participating fully and being limited so often over such a long stretch of time. As Adamski pointed out, this is the same Cortez Allen who was benched and placed on injured reserve last year. At least with that he had a tangible injury — a broken thumb that required surgery.

Allen himself doesn’t appear to understand why he’s not playing, either. Asked if he’s getting closer to being cleared to play, Allen responded, “That’s a Coach Tomlin question.”

Asked if it’s just taken a while to get over his knee injury, he said, after a five-second pause, “Ummmm, the situation is what it is. And… (4-second pause)… that’s just probably a question better answered by Coach Tomlin.”

Are you frustrated? “I try to keep a level, positive head at all times. Yes, I have my feelings about, um, you know, not being able to do but I have to stay mentally in it so I can help as best I can any way and in any way.”

On the surface, it might seem, to an objective observer, Allen’s absence is based more on him being the fifth of five cornerbacks and he isn’t earning a helmet. To mask that, the team is leaning on a past injury to explain why their big money cornerback isn’t getting on the field.

Most who watch the team closely would agree, Allen’s the fifth of the five, and wouldn’t disagree that the team is picking the right four cornerbacks, if only four are to be active on Sundays.

The whole situation seems odd, though, and either way, it seems like just another step toward the end of Allen’s time in Pittsburgh.

Cortez was placed on IR due to brain injury. The previous play was stuck cycling in his short term memory bank rather than concentrating on the current play and using technique to keep him in position. CBs must have the ability to forget the previous burns to avoid repeatedly getting burned.

Yep, they were looking for any excuse to get him off the active roster at that point.
