Coordinators Thread

Looks like three coaches will be retained..

“Mike McCarthy expected to bring back three members of Mike Tomlin’s staff – linebackers coach Scott McCurley, who was on his staff in Dallas; QB coach Tom Arth and secondary coach Gerald Alexander, per sources”
I was hoping 4 coaches would stay, Alexander was one of those four. Good move. Arth and McCurley were "whatever" for me, wouldn't be disappointed or excited.

Looking at the Raiders defense last year under Graham, they were pretty good in terms of yards per play.

Situationally, they were around league average in the red zone and bad on 3rd downs.

Probably an upgrade over Austin, but that is a pretty low bar.
Graham's advanced stats are better than the standard yards/points against. He's elevated and overachieved with the talent he's had on defense. He's not an exciting hire, but probably better than he looks on the surface. It also keeps with the trend of McCarthy hiring more veteran DCs.

Current coordinators are all you need to know regarding whether the Rooneys were willing to open their pocketbook up. I dont need to know who the OC is since he won't be calling plays. If hes not calling plays then he won't be paid much either.

What they do on the field is different. Austin’s D’s often gave up the yards but relied on the pass rush to get home in the red zone. Graham’s teams always were better at limiting yards.

Now how their Ds differ. Mike &Graham’s relationship go all the way back to Greenbay. He wasn’t their DC at the time but notoriously Graham likes to hybrid his D with a mix of 3/4 -4/3.

He likes to try to disguise and confuse in comparison to what Austin likes to do.

I have to agree with you I think it is an upgrade but not sure just how much. I don’t think the Raider offense helped that D causing them to be on the field more.

So I think it has the potential to be a solid hire but you know it is all in the seeing to believe…

Ben Solak of ESPN ranked all coaching staffs ahead of the season. He had the Raiders 6 spots ahead of the Steelers and 9th overall, highlighting Graham as a quality DC.

Keith butler was highly endorsed . Steelers promised him the DC job when lebeau had it,, in order to keep him in pittsburgh and not to leave.
I always thought Butler was better than he was given credit for as Tomlin transformed the defense more into his style and less of what Butler wanted.

But did Butler or Tomlin really call the defense at that time? There was some suspicion at time that Tomlin started putting his fingerprints all over the defensive calls when LeBeau left. Butler fell on the defensive sword at the end of 2021 season. Many felt that he took the sacrificial hit for Tomlin's "poor" defense that year (mainly against the run - pass rush was good, however).

Sigh, this all just screams run it back…

Rooney wants to win now

McCarthy either has been told to stick with the 3-4 defense or is cool with it himself

McCarthy is interviewing a guy who coached with him as OC, the DC is hired who coached with him

McCarthy says he’s open to having Rodgers back

Is there no adult in the room that has the guts to say: we’re not close right now, let’s make changes?

Now watch for all the vets over 30 on defense to get brought back…

The Steelers don't have a bad roster. There are a few holes and a huge missing piece at QB. Teams can acquire a QB in ways other than getting the No. 1 overall pick. Losing games = losing jobs. I completely understand why the FO and HC don't want to blow it up.

We do not have as bad of a roster as some think. OL we are pretty solid at least talent wise. TE we are good, RB we are good, WR we are better than some think but not great. DK will be fine, hopefully they will let Wilson play. CAIII is not terrible. WR should still be a high draft pick. QB is obviously a huge ?. A better scheme should help whoever we have.
DL we are pretty good, OLB we are good, MLB we are ok with Wilson, but should add a run stuffer. CB we are decent, but probably need some safety help. I think scheme should help out there.
K we are good, but could probably use a different punter

This smells of Art II.
Listening to his presser, he was expecting to have "this conversation" with Mike Tomlin, just not WHEN he had it, and was ready to run it back at least next year.
MidMike stepping down caught Art II off guard.
I think Art II has a transition plan in his head for turning the reigns over to Danny.
And I think that was at the end of MidMike's contract, with the option year, so after the 2027 season ended.
I don't think Art II wanted to step down this year or the next.
I think Art wanted to walk out the door hand in hand with MidMike and this threw a wrench in that plan.

I'm hoping this McCarthy hire is Art II trying to get that one last Lombardi before he turns it over to Danny.
He doesn't want to stick around for a total teardown/rebuild.
He wants to leave that for Danny.
And then hopefully Danny comes in with a blowtorch and burns it all to the ground.
At least, this is how I'm trying to rationalize all this nonsense.

But the good news, that which is most important, is Mike Switzer Tomlin the fraud is gone.
And that's all that really matters at this point.

We have a decent roster if we aren't playing playoff teams, our Oline didn't look that good vs playoff teams.

Just give me a DC that's going to scheme around Watt, that's going to not allow teams to simply chip then double him every damn play. James Harrison was one of the most impactful defender for 3 or 4 seasons, and going back and watching the highlights from that defense, he was rarely double teamed because teams couldn't afford to dedicate 2 or 3 guys to him because LeBeau would blitz you from anywhere and everywhere no matter what down it was.
Our defense has been so damn predictable, it's easy for OC's to just dedicate 2 guys every game to Watt, and chip him before that because there's no fear of us doing anything different.

Can someone tell me, why not look at Jim Schwartz? We probably wouldn't lose to CLE again, huge win for this team.

As for TJ, he has to be an option for trading, has to be. Pittsburgh blew that signing, strategy/amount and it needs to be addressed.

Excellent post(s) slash, appreciate you.!!!

I'd like to add in that Grahm's "D" was ranked #14 end of season. That is a nice spot considering the NO NAMES he had on that unit.

Shows me he raises the talent and must tailor to the personnel, all good traits.

Salute the nation
