Coordinators Thread

Right now the fans are defining McCarthys hire by the coordinators he brings in. Or should I say the coordinators Rooney brings in.

Rooney indicated that Mike has input on sub-coaching.

I asked A I to give its opinion on Wells:

1. The "Tight End Whisperer" (Dallas, 2020–2025)

Wells has been Mike McCarthy's Tight Ends coach for the last five seasons. His units are defined by consistent development of mid-to-late round talent.

  • Jake Ferguson: Turned a 4th-round pick into a Pro Bowler. In 2025, Ferguson was the "Enforcer" of that offense, hauling in 82 receptions and 8 touchdowns.
  • Dalton Schultz: Wells oversaw his breakout years (78 catches, 808 yards in 2021) before Schultz landed a massive contract elsewhere.
  • The "Physicality" Factor: In 2025, Wells made "violence" and "dominating the line of scrimmage" the mantra for his room. His units are known for being heavy-handed blockers who can also operate as a QB's safety valve over the middle.

2. The "O-Line" Foundation (NY Giants, 2013–2017)

Before coaching Tight Ends, Wells spent five years as an Assistant Offensive Line Coach for the Giants.

  • Historical High: In 2012 (as a QC coach), he was part of a staff that led the Giants to their second-highest point total in franchise history (429 points).
  • The Grit: He helped manage lines that were constantly rotating due to injuries, teaching a "next man up" mentality that fits the Pittsburgh "Steel City" brand.

How He Fits Your Steelers Strategy

  • The McCarthy Connection: Since McCarthy will likely be calling the plays himself (as he did in Dallas), he doesn't need a "scheme genius" as much as he needs a "Teacher." Wells is a McCarthy loyalist who knows the West Coast system inside and out.
  • Exploiting the Middle: If Wells is the OC, expect Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington to become the focal points of the passing game. He excels at using TEs to create mismatches.
  • Draft Synergy: Because Wells is coaching the Shrine Bowl right now, he’ll have the "inside scoop" on those 3rd-round fallback options like Garrett Nussmeier or mid-round WRs.
The Verdict: Wells isn't a "flashy" hire—he’s a "Grinder." His units are high-effort, physically imposing, and highly productive in the red zone

The Harris guy isn't he the bears dback coach? Don't they have a stud free agent safety?
.

Broncos just fired their OC wouldn’t be horrible to find him a role..

I apologize if I've missed this but is Austin officially out as DC??

His contract expired and NO word of renewal.

Highly doubtful he returns,…….. why the fuggly would McCarthy want him back,????

I think I'd rather have their QB coach, but Payton probably plans on promoting him, so he doesn't lose him.
I wonder if this is slowly going to be a trend in the NFL.

Last year, analysts who cover Tampa Bay suggested the Bucs should fire Bowles to keep Coen. Basically, they felt Coen was worth more to the franchise than Bowles. A year later, Coen turned around the Jaguars and everyone has Bowles fired after the 2026 season.

Buffalo fired McDermott in favor of Joe Brady. Denver made a surprise move firing Lombardi with the assumption Webb will be promoted. It's a very small sample size and will be worth watching moving foward.

I saw that. A bit harsh I thought. 401 points in the regular season, 33 Points against Buffalo in the playoffs and out after they have one bad game against one of the NFL's best defences with a backup quarterback who has 4 career starts in seven years in the NFL, and last pass thrown in the NFL more than two years prior.

And it sure wasn't his decision to go for it on 4-1 from the 11 with a 7 point lead, a back up QB and nasty weather inbound.

Supposedly, Rooney feels they will spend what is needed. He indicated that MM will find the best and they will pay for them.

Not meant to say MM has sole say in who they hire.

I think is was indicated that MM / Kahn / both Rooney’s.
If Deuce wants to avoid his team being continually humiliated by double-digit losses in their first-round playoff games then he'd better pony up.

McC mentioned the "current staff" of coaches.....surely there will be a new DC, right?!?!
Austin's contract was up and he wasn't going to be extended even if Shades stayed.
