Report: James Conner to have surgery on MCL, weighing the Steelers options at RB
13
The Pittsburgh Steelers lost another player to injury Sunday, and the team will have to make some tough decisions with their roster.
By Jeff.Hartman@BnGBlitz Dec 18, 2017, 5:59pm EST

After the Pittsburgh Steelers loss to the New England Patriots in Week 15, the team had several key injuries. The most notable injury was the calf injury to Antonio Brown, but what didn’t make headlines was the knee injury to rookie running back James Conner.

Conner, who has been very good running the football when given the opportunity, suffered a sprained MCL ligament in his knee, per Mike Tomlin in his post-game press conference.

Reports are now stating Conner will need surgery to repair the ligament, and his short-term future is in question.

With Conner going under the knife, what options do the Steelers have behind Le’Veon Bell?

The team could place Conner on Injured Reserve, ending his rookie season, and promote Terrell Watson from the practice squad to replace him on the depth chart.
Pittsburgh could keep him, hoping he can return for the playoffs, and make a roster move, likely still resulting in Watson being promoted to the active roster.
If Conner’s season is over, the team could also look elsewhere for help. DeAngelo Williams remains unsigned, and knows the team’s system well enough to come in and be a depth player if needed. Williams’ conditioning is unknown, but he has openly said he would still like to play in 2017 if the opportunity presented itself.
Mike Tomlin, and the team, will likely make a decision on Conner Tuesday, prior to Tomlin’s press conference at noon. With Bell and Fitzgerald Toussaint already on the active roster, the team would just need to fill the other spot on the running back depth chart, but a lot of questions remain:

Does the team trust Fitzgerald Toussaint and/or Terrell Watson?
Would DeAngelo Williams actually be able to help?
Will Conner’s knee heal in time for him to return for the postseason?
All questions which will have to be answered sooner rather than later, and the Steelers are fortunate they have some of the options listed above available to them.

James Conner was a very bright spot not just for his personal story but his ability is genuine. Our coaching staff seems to be stuck on run the wheels off him (Bell) so Conner didn't get much work in. I wish and hope he fully recovers and is a productive young man and not just in football terms. At this point in the season Dwill may be a viable option but he truely needs to be better than what we currently have on the roster. Yes, bring him in but MAKE him prove his speed and agility in a FULL try out workout, don't just take his word for it.

Salute the nation

Pass on DWill. I don't really want Toussant getting carries either.

I guess, we promote Watson, and hope he can hold on to the ball.

Those things take a good 4-6 weeks to heal if it's pretty bad. I messed mine up pretty good knee swelled like a grapefruit, inside of the leg filled with blood. Hurt like a mother ****** when I did it. In 6 weeks though I was feeling about good as new. Now the lateral movement needed by a running back,I don't think so. I hope it's just to help it heal faster and it's not a complete tear.

So it might not have played out the same, but theoretically spelling bell with Connor saved Bell from taking the hit that sprained Connors knee... again no two plays run with different players are exactly the same, but still this is why you have a backup rb take some carries

Let’s give them the AC/DC treatment...a whole lotta Rosie

Watson will do just fine.
He will compliment the other two with a 240 lb attitude. He did well in pre-season, knows the system and won't cost half what the aging DWill will cost.

Logical move is IR and call up Watson. They do need to remove a player from the active roster by 4 PM Monday. Here's that chance without actually cutting someone.
