I am finding I have less interest in sports as the years pass. At frst, I thought it was my age. Then I realized, all the teams in Pittsburgh kinda suck right now. Easier to watch when they are winning.

Just kidding... amazing how 4 years ago I watched a bunch of Penguins games.....this year I haven't watched one game start to finish.

I've lost some interest and a lot of fanaticism for the Steelers but it's probably for the best. I used to take them losing personally.

I also like college football more than the NFL now but I'm not a huge fan of any one team like I am of the Steelers.

And why is that? Im the same way. Anymore I don't because they usually deserve to lose. I guess its the fact that I can see the flaws , where they are.. & what they need. But if they don't care.. why should I?

Couple things.
Non-donators will be locked out on game day.
The fam being back together will help elimate the idiots. When you get ten people calling you an *******, embarressing you, then laughing at you they tend to run away with their tail between their legs. Last few years its been a few idiots trolling against on person and no one backs up the legitimate poster.

Things are a changing..

One of the things that attracted me to the board, and to become a contributor right away in 2009 was the clear sense of camaraderie in calling out asshats and fucktards, two words I learned here. What that meant was that the regulars would call out dumbassery, and the dumbass posters would be quiet. Over the past couple years, that has changed and the dumbass, argumentative posters have been ignored (or worse) by being engaged in vitriolic semantics by those trying to politely rein them in. This overt politeness has given courage and conviction to the continued and ramped up dumbass posting.

A good example has been the evolution of the Supe/Idiotic "dialogue". A few years back and Idiot would have just STFU because he was clearly just being a dick most of the time. And then he would disappear for stretches. Until his recent banning, he became more and more emboldened because others, even Supe, had become simply too nice in responding to him.

It was great to see Buff just get rid of a poster who simply lowered the utility of SN.

i'll admit...back before the SteelerWatch merger...i was mainly a reader of other peoples opinions...only able to watch Steeler games when they were carried on my local channels...and then about the time of the merger and for quite a few years after i started getting into the draft...watching more college games...watching more college players...at one point i was really into it...but over the last several years...basically since i got burned out with SN...i got burned out with everything other than just watching the games...and i actually enjoyed it...it was nice not listening to 100 people talking about how so-and-so should die...and how this other guy was the worst at his position since the inception of leather helmets...i watched the games...i enjoyed the wins...i hated the losses...but i got away from the constant critique that i had gotten used to...not just from others...but from myself also...and i enjoyed my sundays/mondays/thursdays...maybe through ignorance...maybe through blindness...maybe through brand new rose colored glasses...whatever you want to call it...but i ENJOYED watching the Steelers again...of course i got angry when someone blew a play...of course i got frustrated when i knew what play was going to be called...but by god i was actually WATCHING every game...something that i'd never been able to do in the 80s-90s and even part of the 00s...something i didn't really get to enjoy EVER growing up...the ability to actually WATCH a Steelers game...other than a prime-time game...other than when the Chiefs/Rams/Cowboys were all on bye week...something i'd forgotten i now had access to but had started to take for granted...all while getting more and more into the dissection and critique of the team...

i'm back...and i'm looking forward to the opinions of several of the members of SN that i've always respected...and i'm sure to learn from some of the newer members too...i've always loved the wealth of information we've had here...i just hope i don't get mired back down into the dregs of asinine hate again also...

I have a confession too. Back in the day, I had a crush on your wife. She looked like a young Minnie Driver, if I recall correctly...

Confluence has always been one of my favorite posters on here, quite frankly because of how intelligent he is.

And he is right -- make that two votes. I haven't always liked Coolie, in fact there were times I was pissed off by him -- but (damn this hurts to say) I always respected and I knew I could count on him to call out an ******* immediately and reign them in -- something that he did a great job of back in the day and the board stayed in line.. Supes on the other hand was more smart assery in making some one look stupid which also worked.

Kinder, gentler is not necessary, it's keeping ******** in line and stopping hijacking of threads, stopping unnecessarily long threads, and banning people who are need banned. Make an ******* feel the pain when they deserve it by getting rid of them.

We used to allow that asshat about to be banned some time on the board to continue to hang themselves through their stupidity because we circled the wagons and destroyed them -- like a cat toying with a mouse before they were killed.

However, some of the "old guard" have developed the habit of attacking new posters as soon as they do anything other than agree with that "old guard's" opinion. That isn't the way to keep the board growing and encourage intelligent dialogue.

Now, I'm not using that as an excuse for some of the arguments I've gotten into. What I am saying however is that some of the newer people come on this board to talk about Steelers football and to read the opinions of others about the same. If they seem a little less knowledgeable about football in general, and the Steelers in particular, take the time to educate them before attacking them. I mean most people are more willing to have an intelligent conversation and learn or at least listen if you don't start off by calling them a dumb ***, etc. etc.

At times it seemed to me as a newer guy that when responding to the attacks of an "old guard" guy, I was told to "knock it off" and threatened with the "ban hammer" when it wasn't me who started with the personal attacks, etc. Especially if that old guard person happened to be espousing a position taken by the moderator threatening the ban.

I also realize that there are those in both the "new guys" and "old guard" groupings that are just incorrigible and only come on here to tell others how stupid they are for not agreeing with them, and to "win the internet". So ban them.

Ten years ago when I came on I had to earn my respect too; but you did so by showing respect. I see nothing from anything you've said that remotely lacks respect.

Oh there were haters that came on out of pure jealousy in 2010 in particular; hot of the Ben escapade and a championship level team. Even in 2008, I remember Titans fans coming on to boast. Ravens fans came on frequently. Some were pure jerks and we beat the life out of them, but realize that they were really overboard.

I see old guard names I'd like to see gone even now --- and I will recommend when and if it comes up. I came back when the IDIOT was finally rid of; but what I can see, you are the type of poster the board needs more of.

I'm not so much talking for/about myself. I've got thick enough skin to deal with it and dish it out in return when necessary. There have been a few new guys that I've seen run off the board who weren't calling names, stirring things up etc. It's a shame because some of those folks could have ended up as valued posters and helped to keep this board growing.

Basically, I'd say I have no problem with making people earn their respect. But, if that's the standard, you have to give them some time to do so. Again, this does not include those that are obvious asshats.

I bet I know the person you find most annoying. Get some serious people in here and just be respectful.....not everyone liked me by any means and prob still don't.....first to admit I could seem like a know it all myself. But we always knew where to draw the line and when it got blurred a few ppl made the comments to me that made me realize I went too far myself.
