College Football Week 8

He played vanilla at OSU until he was overruled after the first Oregon game last year…was never a fan.
I read that they took play calling duties from him, but was told that’s not true, so I don’t know.

But PSU’s defense fell off a cliff this year. Not sure why anyone thought he deserved $3 million a year. His defense sure isn’t worth it. Give me Manny Diaz any day.

I was traveling this weekend so I saw almost no games, even the Penn State game. They came up short but it appears they at least played better than the last few weeks. The defense is failing because they're being beaten physically. I'm not sure that can be fixed with scheme. It will have to be fixed through the portal in the offseason.

The offense is failing due to scheme. They offense has the talent, but the problem is the defense knows what's coming. The passing scheme is a joke. It's all underneath and horizontal. If the defense doesn't fall for the gimmicks (few do this year), then the route combos do nothing. They brought in 3 transfer WRs who were not 1st round talents, but they were proven to be productive. They can't do anything in the scheme.

Kotalniki is coaching for his career now. This week was an outlier. They were off their normal schedule due to firing the coach. So they really couldn't change much ion a week if it was Franklin who was putting the brakes on the offense. Now they have a Bye before Ohio State. This is Kotalniki's chance to install some better passing concepts. I don't expect a miracle. I'd settle for watching the PSU QB take a snap and be able to throw to a 1st read that's actually open more than 5 yards downfield.

I did catch the Franklin interview. He and Saban have the same agent which explains Saban's defense of Franklin by calling it unfair that he was fired. Saban knows damn well that Franklin would not have lasted even 5 years at Bama, LSU, Georgia, Auburn, etc. with such a dismal big game record.

It was a bit rich to see Franklin paint himself as some sort of victim. I have nothing against him. I'm not going to root against him at his next job. Maybe he will learn from his time at PSU and be more aggressive. But listening to that interview, it sounds like he thinks he doesn't have to change a thing. That will be good news bad news for his next team.

Good news, he will make your program better and build you into a contender. Bad News, that's as far as you'll get when he gets in a big game and coaches scared and comes up short.

I have no skin in the PSU game, unless you count when I was a little kid, but there is something about James Franklin that I don't really like. I have no idea what it is.
