College Football Week 8
Big news is James Franklin fired. Reportedly he asked the Athletic Director for a raise before this season. He refused to Franklin tried to go around him to the Board of Trustees and they said No. That was likely the beginning of the end. Franklin looked checked out this year.
He will appear on ESPN's Gameday show for an interview. Will he stay positive, praise his time at PSU and try to set himself up for a new job? Or will he take subtle jabs at the AD?
Michigan State also fired their coach after a loss to UCLA. That means UCLA has 2 wins and both of those coaches are now fired.
Lots of big games this week.
Penn State at Iowa 7:00 Peacock streaming Iowa -3.5
DB coach Terry Smith is interim HC. He's the stepfather of form Penn State CB Justin King and he's a no nonsense kind of guy. He talked a lot about effort this week. Will we see some young players see the field finally?
Ethan Grunkemeyer takes over at QB for Drew Allar. I hope they switch up the offense and give him some easy quick throws instead of the slow developing jet sweep play fake nonsense they normally do.
Iowa's OL is probably the best in the nation and the Penn State front 7 is undersized. This could be a long night for PSU in the trenches. Some pretty awful weather is in the forecast as well.
The season is a bust. I just hope to see some life in the passing game. Was Franklin the one holding back the passing game from being more aggressive?
Here's what's about to come at the Penn State undersized front 7.
Washington at Michigan 12:00 FOX Mich -5.5
Wash is 5-1 and their only loss is to #1 Ohio State where they played them tough until late. They'd be ranked about 15 if they were in the SEC. Michigan is no longer ranked after losing to USC. If Michigan loses, do they start looking at coach Sherrone Moore sideways?
10 LSU at 17 Vanderbilt 12:00 ABC Van -2.5
LSU barely survived Clemson week 1 and has not been impressive vs any team with a pulse all year. Vandy had a bye week to prepare for this game after they were handled by Bama 2 weeks ago. Vandy is favored vs LSU for the first time since 1948.
12 Georgia Tech at Duke 12:00 ESPN Duke -1.5
Could Duke HC Manny Diaz be a candidate for Penn State? He was DC there for a few years before going to Duke. Ga Tech is quietly unbeaten and in 1st place in the ACC. They don't play Miami in the regular season and don't face a ranked team until the final week vs Georgia. They just need to stack wins vs unranked teams and get to that ACC Championship.
14 Oklahoma at South Carolina 12:45 SECN OU -5.5
Oklahoma was handled pretty easily by Texas last week and their signature win vs Michigan isn't looking as great now. This is a must win for Oklahoma because they have 5 straight ranked games after this. Oklahoma coach Brent Venables could get fired if they end up with 3 or 4 losses.
1 Ohio State at Wisconsin 3:30 CBS OSU -25.5
Wisconsin sucks. OSU will destroy them. OSU is on cruise control until Michigan which should be another easy win.
Michigan State at 3 Indiana 3:30 Peacock IU -27.5
Indiana just gave HC Curt Cignetti a huge new contract. They better hope he's the real deal and not just a guy who caught lightning in a bottle for a few years because they gave him 98 Mill guaranteed.
4 Texas A&M at Arkansas 3:30 ESPN TAM -7.5
Why is #4 only favored by 7.5 over a 2-4 team who fired their coach? It's only the 2nd road game for TAM. Could they look ahead to LSU next week?
5 Ole Miss at 9 Georgia 3:30 ABC UGA -7.5
Georgia needs this one to avoid loss 2 which would put them on thin ice the rest of the season. Ole Miss had to hang on to beat Washington State last week. If Miss wins this one, they will likely make the playoffs because they only ranked team left for them is Oklahoma next week and OK may not be as good as advertised.
8 Oregon at Rutgers 6:30 BTN Ore -17.5
Oregon was mostly dominated at home by Indiana. Oregon's offense only managed 13 points. This is a really long road trip and they may overlook Rutgers who may not have top talent but they're well coached and play hard.
11 Tennessee at 6 Alabama 7:30 ABC ALA -7.5
both team with 1 loss already. Tenn has only played 1 ranked team, Georgia, and they lost. The last 2 weeks they needed OT to beat Miss State, then a 3 point win vs Arkansas. Bama has looked good after their opening week stinker vs FSU. The winner is in great shape for a playoff spot and the loser will have no room for error the rest of the way.
20 USC at 13 Notre Dame 7:30 NBC ND -9.5
This is a must win for ND. They already have 2 losses and USC is the only ranked team left on the schedule. If ND loses this one, it's 3 losses and their best win by end of year could be Navy. I can't see any way they make the playoff with a loss.
This should be an exciting game with 2 great offenses. If USC was in the SEC they'd probably be ranked 10. If USC can win this one, they are in good shape for the playoffs.
23 Utah at 15 BYU 8:00 FOX Utah -3.5
The holy war game. BYU is unbeaten but hasn't played any ranked teams. Utah's lone loss was to ranked Texas Tech in a blowout. Utah needs this one to stay in play in the Big 12
