College Football Week 7
This is a great week of matchups. We should learn a lot this week.
Northwestern at Penn State 3:30 FS1 PSU -21.5
It's homecoming. Yay.
Penn State's DL and LBs were dominated by UCLA. Penn State's OL once again, could not block for ****. The WRs didn't get open and ran lazy routes. Multiple times, a WR allowed himself to be run out of bounds by the DB, then becoming ineligible to catch a pass. Not that they were open anyway.
In theory, Penn State can still make the playoffs. If they win out, they would have to win at the shoe against #1 Ohio State and also beat Indiana. The chances of that are near zero.
This team could lose 4 games. The DTs are undersized and getting overpowered. The loss of starting LB Tony Rojas is catastrophic. They have a bunch of highly recruited LBs that are soph and freshmen. Franklin has said they're not ready. Well, they can't be worse than Dom Deluca.
Same goes for the WRs. They are jogging out there. They have 2 WRs in particular Tyseer Denmark and freshman Koby Howard. Howard was a beast all training camp. When asked, Penn State's DBs say they can barely cover him. I don't care if he makes some mistakes, at least he can get open and make some plays.
Franklin is on the hot seat. It's $56 Million to fire him. That drops to "just" $48 Million on Jan 1. Penn State is in the middle of a $750 million renovation on Beaver Stadium. If he took another job,, the buyout is relatively small. Is there a team out there that would offer him a big contract to entice him to leave? If so, maybe he'd negotiate a lower buyout with PSU to take the new job and a fresh start.
He may not be able to win the big one, but he's damn good at building up a program. Tons of teams should want him. Let him build your program for about 5 years and then if he still can't win the big one, you hire a new coach who gets to take over a good program and take you the rest of the way. Maybe that's his best role, to be a program "Flipper".
What about North Carolina? They have major egg on their face from this Belichick debacle and rumor is they are discussing buyout already. Their program is a dumpster fire. Franklin could be the perfect guy to go in there and build them up to be a contender. Unlikely to happen but one can dream.
Franklin needs to use this as an opportunity to just go for it. All of the aggressive plays you're afraid to run, now is the time.
ULCA at MIchigan State 12:00 BTN MSU -7.5
watch UCLA lose by double digits to rub more salt in Penn State's wound
1 Ohio State at 17 Illinois 12:00 FOX OSU -14.5
OSU does not play Oregon in the regular season and with Penn State's implosion, this means Illinois is the only ranked team OSU plays until Michigan at the end of the year. Win this one and their playoff ticket is nearly punched already. Ohio State is loaded again. The offense had a slow start with a new QB but it's getting better each week.
8 Alabama at 14 Missouri 12:00 ABC Ala -2.5
this game will probably have huge ratings in PA as many Penn State fans hate watch to see if Beau Pribula has a good game vs a top 10 opponent. Bama has turned things around after the rough start. Mizz has looked good but this is their first real test. Bama QB Ty Simpson could be climbing up draft boards. His knock could be that he's small. He's listad at 6'2 208. If he's actually closer to 6'0 he may fall. It absolutely is yougher for short QBs to make it in the NFL.
Pitt at 25 Florida State 12:00 ESPN FSU -10.5
must win for each of them to keep playoffs hopes alive. Pitt benched QB ELi Holstein, who makes more money than the Pirates Paul Skenes, and new starter Mason Heintschel threw for 4 TDs vs Boston College. Will Heintschel play well enough to get stolen by a bigger progam in the portal?
7 Indiana at 3 Oregon 3:30 CBS Ore -6.5
Oregon is coming off a bye. They don't play Ohio State or Michigan so this is the toughest game left on their schedule, although the rivalry game against Wash at the end could be tough. Indiana is still desperate to prove themselves. The Illinois win was good but it's not a signature win. Oregon would be that win. This is a big game fo QB scouting. Oregon QB Dante Moore got all the buzz after the penn state game. Mendoza has looked great
6 Oklahoma vs Texas 3:30 ABC from Cotton Bowl Tex -1.5
The Red River Shootout. Oklahoma QB John Mateer is out with hand surgery, but he claims he's going to play. His coach says, we'll see. So Mateer will play. Or he won't. Texas has looked rough this year. Arch has not been good. Steve Sarkisian may be James Franklin's biggest fan. He'd probably be getting more heat himself if not for Franklin.
Nebraska at Maryland 3:30 BTN Neb -5.5
Both teams are 4-1. This would be a solid win for either program at this point and the winner will likely be ranked in the next poll.
Florida at 5 Texas A&M 7:00 ESPN TAM -7.5
Florida coach Billy Napier lives on the hot seat. He had 1 foot out the door and then he beat Texas last week. Florida's defense is excellent. It's their offense that's holding them back. TAM is often ranked high this time of year and right about now is when it starts to unravel. TAM QB Marcel Reed is streaky. They have been running the ball like crazy the last few weeks.
10 Georgia at Auburn 7:30 ABC UGA -3.5
Georgia has tons of talent but something hasn't been clicking for them last year or this year. They gave up huge plays vs Tenn and had to come back late. They were outplayed by Bama, who pretty much owns Kirby Smart. Auburn's offense is struggling so Georgia should be able to choke them out.
15 Michigan at USC 7:30 NBC USC -2.5
USC's offense has been great this year. They were on the verge of being ranked when they lost a close one to Illinois last week. This will be interesting to see the USC offense vs the Michigan defense. Michigan freshman QB Bryce Underwood has had moments but still plays like a freshman. Mich is keeping it simple for him. If USC can put up some points early, Mich may have to open up that offense.
South Carolina at 11 LSU 7:45 SECN LSU -9.5
SC QB Lanorris Sellers has not had the breakout season most expected. Same can be said of LSU QB Nussmeier. LSU is still benefitting from the week 1 win over Clemson when that seemed like a big deal. Since then, they had tough win vs Florida and lost to Ole Miss. They held Miss to 24 points which is pretty good. LSU has defense and a sputtering offense.
21 Arizona State at Utah 10:15 ESPN Utah -7.5
A pretty good nightcap game. Here's a crazy stat. Arizona State is ranked higher in hockey than football. They somehow have a good hockey program.
