College Football Week 13
Tough week for SEC teams. Opponents include Samford, Charlotte, Eastern Illinois, Mercer, Coastal Carolina, and Western Kentucky
The big rumor of the week is that Lane Kiffin actually met with LSU about their open job. Supposedly Ole Miss gave him an ultimatum to sign his extension with them by the Egg Bowl vs Miss State. Kiffin denied that but he's linked to pretty much every open job. Bama may be in the mix too if they miss the playoffs.
With so many coaches already fired, I wonder if that could actually save some jobs. Wisconsin already announced Luke Ficlkel will be back. Maryland and Florida State have not fired their coaches. Is it possible that with so many openings, some teams may just stick with their guy at least 1 more year rather than play musical chairs this year? If you don't want to get into a bidding war for a big name then maybe it's better to wait a year rather than just fire your guy to hire some young, unproven coach.
Would Wisconsin do better than Fickel this year? Can Maryland do better than Locksley or FSU better than Norvell? Maybe not without paying a ton of money. The smart move may be to wait a year and hope the coaching market is less crazy.
Nebraska at Penn State 7:00 NBC PSU -7.5
Primetime matchup of 2 blue blood teams with backup QBs. The student section may be sparse as Thanksgiving break on campus starts on Friday. Lots of them won't delay their travel plans until Sunday.
Penn State's defense is playing much better. A combination of playing some young guys, and attacking more with the front 7.
Kaytron Allen is 3rd all time in career rushing at Penn State behind #2 Saquon, and #1 Evan Royster. Kaytron needs just 139 yards rushing to become the all time leading rusher. This is Penn State's last home game so you know they want to get it vs Nebraska who ranks 93rd in rush defense.
Penn State can avoid a losing season with wins vs Nebraska and Rutgers. It would likely be a team vote on accepting a bowl. If they finish with 3 straight wins, maybe they will want to go, depending on which bowl invites them.
22 Missouri at 8 Oklahoma 12:00 ABC OU -7.5
Oklahoma coming off their big win vs Bama. They are in the playoffs unless they choke against Mizz or LSU. Mizz still has playoff hopes with 3 losses. They need to win out and hope for help. Beau Pribula may play this game. Mizz coach Eli Drinkwitz is rumored as a candidate for Penn State. Interesting that he hasn't gotten an extension from Mizz like other coaches have.
13 Miami at Virginia Tech 12:00 ESPN Mia -18.5
James Franklin is in the house for Va Tech and he already complained about the airport and about "alignment". Miami needs to stop complaining about Notre Dame and stay focused because they are out with a 3rd loss.
15 USC at 7 Oregon 3:30 CBS Ore -10.5
This looks like the best game of that day, aside from Penn State obviously. USC has 2 losses so this is a must win for them to keep playoff hopes alive. Oregon only has 1 loss to #2 Indiana so they'd still be alive with a 2nd loss here. USC hasn't won at Oregon since 2011. USC is the best offense Oregon will face this year.
18 Michigan at Maryland 4:00 BTN Mich -13.5
Nobody's talking about Michigan but they have only 2 losses. If they beat Marylamd then Ohio State, they will be in the playoffs. Maryland has lost 6 in a row. WIll they fire coach Mike Locksley? They may keep him at least 1 more year because they have a good freshman QB who may leave if Locksley is fired.
TCU at 23 Houston 4:00 FOX Hou -1.5
Houston needs help to get a spot in the Big 12 title game and that's probably their only path to the playoffs. A loss here will eliminate them from Big 12 and playoff contention.
Pitt at 16 Georgia Tech 7:00 ESPN GT -2.5
Narduzzi said last week's game vs Notre Dame didn't matter and they played like it. It's rumored that Georgia Tech coach Brent Key interviewed for the Penn State job. Pitt freshman QB Mason Heintschel had a rough game vs ND under 50% completions and only 128 yards. Tech is in 1st in the ACC and in good shape for the playoffs so long as they don't blow it.
20 Tennessee at Florida 7:30 ABC Ten -4.5
Tenn has lost 10 straight in Gainesville. Tenn's 3 losses are to Georgia, Bama, and Oklahoma which doesn't sound so bad. But those are also the only 3 good teams they've played. Their best win is probably @ Kentucky. Florida fired their coach but they have a bunch of talent. Tenn is still somewhat unknown against teams with equal talent.
11 BYU at Cincinnati 8:00 FOX BYU -2.5
BYU QB Bear Bachmeier takes on the Bearcats. What is a Bearcat? A bearcat, also called "Asian Bearcat" or "Binturong," is neither a bear nor a cat as its misleading name suggests, but it looks more like a raccoon. Bearcats are fascinating mammals in the wild with unique characteristics like a prehensile tail, ear tufts, semi-retractable claws, cat whiskers, and a buttered popcorn scent.
Washington at UCLA 10:30 NBC Wash -10.5
another old Pac 12 matchup. Neither team has playoff hopes but this could be an entertaining game to use as an excuse to drink on your couch late into the night.
