College Football Bowl Thread

Music City Bowl 4:00 ESPN
Miss State vs Louisville
Former Penn State QB Tommie Stevens will start the game. Miss State RB Kylin Hill will play. He is not sitting out for the draft. That could be the key to the game vs a Louisville team that struggles to stop the run. Miss State CB Cameron Dantzler is sitting out for draft. MSU is also getting back a bunch of players from suspensions. Miss State only became bowl eligible because Ole Miss was flagged for excessive celebration on what should have been the game tying TD with 4 seconds left. Miss State is better on paper but they have been in disarray all year and a more focused Louisville could win this.

As usual you leave out a few things because it's an SEC team. MSU's starting QB isn't playing because of a fight. That's why Stevens is playing (and not playing well). They have no business in a bowl game anyway. You also forgot to mention senior safety Cole isn't playing either. Both those guys are being replaced by freshmen. Also I remember the suspensions at the first of the year. Who are the bunch of players from suspension they are getting back?

Redbox Bowl 4:00 Fox
Cal vs Illinois
Lovie Smith has done a good job rebuilding an awful Illinois program. They had several transfers who played this year and it took time to come together. They beat Wisconsin. They have some talent and Lovie thinks they may have turned the corner as a program to become competitive. Cal will be without 3 defensive starters in the secondary due to suspensions and injuries.

35-20 Cal right now. Maybe Wisconsin isn't as good as advertised?

Orange Bowl 8:00 ESPN
9 Florida vs 24 Virginia
i thought Florida was kind of Meh this year, but they are good on defense and that should be enough to beat Virginia who aspires to be Meh. Florida QB Kyle Trask has been pretty good. Virginia lost their star CB Bryce Hall to injury and their defense is not the same as it was earlier in the year. They won’t stop Florida. Virginia’s only hope is that their dual threat QB Bryce Perkins has the game of his life. I think he’ll have some moments but he’ll be under too much pressure to be consistent. This game is likely a blowout.

Florida should win but Henderson (their starting CB) isn't playing because of the draft.

Cal's QB looked pretty good.

Illinois will probably be top 25 next year, they are building a half decent team there.

Virginia just scored, 6 point game early in the fourth. Game is entertaining so far

Virginia played pretty well last night. Perkins missed on some wide open touchdowns and Florida’s fake injury late in the game may have broke Virginia’s momentum with an interception two plays later.

My old basketball teammate's son plays today v FSU. Forks Up! Jayden Daniels.

texas crushing utah...

yea, yea, i know. New Years eve. I never go out on NY

nor do I, too many drunk drivers

agree. i made my daughter make arrangements to stay at her friends house. no going out of the house. My son is at college so I told him either party at home or stay where you are....if not, I will pay for the uber

New Year's day only has 4 games and somehow 2 of them are on at the same time.

Outback Bowl 1:00 ESPN
18 Minnesota vs 12 Auburn
These teams are pretty similar. Both run the ball to set up big pass plays. On defense, both are good at limiting big pass plays. Minnesota has a pair of tall WRs that will likely play in the NFL. They can win jump balls. Auburn freshman QB Bo Nix has been up and down. Minnesota's defense is good at baiting QBs into mistakes. Nix will have to stay patient.

Citrus Bowl 1:00 ABC
14 Michigan vs 13 Alabama
Alabama has a bunch of injuries, not just Tua. Michigan needs this game. Harbaugh really hasn't won a big game yet, which is probably fitting since Bo Schembeckler could never win the big one either.

Michigan DC Don Brown gets all this hype for being great but he's just a guy who blitzes a ton and that will rattle 90% of college QBs, especially when they are overmatched athletically. What happens with the other 10%? They torch his defense. The shining example was against Penn State. Penn State has only 1 reliable big play threat and Don Brown thought it was a good idea to cover Kj Hamler with a safety.

Bama has 3 great WRs. If Don Brown does his usual blitzing, they will get smoked.

Bama's heart may not be in this one and Michigan really needs it. With the injuries to Bama, Michigan really should win this but I don;t trust them in a big game.

Rose Bowl 5:00 ABC
6 Oregon vs 8 Wisconsin
This will probably be a tough game for Wisconsin because they know that the far superior Penn State should have gotten this game. Somehow they wioll struggle through their shame and play.

A few weeks ago, I thought Utah was really good. They were tough and physical and could control the game with the run. Then they were dominated by Oregon. Oregon easily shut down their run game and Utah looked outclassed athletically. Oregon clearly outplayed Auburn in week 1 but lost after a ridiculous number of unforced mistakes. Then they kind of sleep walked through the season, until they woke up vs Utah. So the Utah game, coupled with how they played vs Auburn had me thinking Oregon was tough.

Then Utah was dominated by **** *** Texas. Utah couldn't score on a bad Texas defense. So now Oregon's shutting down the Utah run is not quite as impressive.

Wisconsin is committed to the run and Jonathan Taylor is a great RB. He doesn't need huge holes to gain yards. They also have a playmaking WR Quintez Cephus. Oregon QB Justin Herbert will be a 1st round pick. He's big, with a strong arm, and has decent mobility. But he can be streaky. Wisconsin's defense is about limiting big plays. Herbert can't try to force plays because he doesn't have a consistent go to guy. He spreads the ball around and he has to continue to do that.

Sugar Bowl 8:45 ESPN
5 Georgia vs 7 Baylor
Georgia will be without a bunch of guys due to injury and also guys skipping it to prepare for the draft. Their top 2 WRs are injured and have been for weeks. Both starting OTs are skipping the game, and their best RB D'Andre Smith may or may not play. Right now he says he will but maybe not.

Georgia's offense was already **** with those guys. what will it be without them? Georgia has recruited well for years so they should have capable backups. Baylor is just 2 years removed from a 1-11 season. Georgia still has way more talent. But baylor plays hard.

Injured Baylor QB Charlie Brewer is supposed to play, but coaches sometimes lie about these things. If Brewer can't play or if he isn't himself then Baylor will struggle on offense. Georgia's defense is really good and they need Brewer to have a chance.

The Big 12 is currently 1-4 in the bowls after Texas beat Utah. Sounds bad but Oklahoma state had a close loss vs Texas A&M, Kansas State a close loss to #23 Navy. Iowa State got blown out vs Notre Dame but that game was a mismatch. ND was ranked 15 and Iowa State was an unranke 7 win team. The other loss was obviously the Oklahoma blowut vs LSU. So the Big 12 has been competitive.

This could be a program building win for Baylor. Georgia could be in for a letdown but the game is in Atlanta so Georgia has homefield advantage

Did ESPN ruin college bowl season?

Seems to me you could count on more than just one ****** game on TV on NYE

Seems to me they want to spread it out over a period over several weeks.. It sucks for people like me who are used to NFL Sunday ticket.........

Did ESPN ruin college bowl season?

Yes. They have basically every game so the goal is as many games on as many days as possible. I watch them after Christmas because many of the games are pretty entertaining, but any sense of tradition is gone.

Bama is injured and they always play down to teams when they aren't in the playoffs. Unless Michigan is disinterested as well they should win.

Its just not the same as it used to be.....I remember all the excitement of New years day with the bowl games and now with them playing the only two important games the weekend before all the games after are just fluff.

They need to expand the playoffs and put at least 8 teams in it and play those games leading up to new years and at least play those two championship games new years day. Use the important bowls for the 1/4 finals or whatever. They can drop a couple of the useless non conference regular season games everyone plays if they are worried about how many games are being played in a season.

Now its basically who makes the final 4 and the rest could care less.

Players sitting out bowl games as to not jeopardize their stock in the draft is becoming more and more prevalent. As much as it disappoints me as a college football fan, maybe it will help to convince people that a 8 or 16 game playoff is the way to go.

I’m ok if a kid sits out of a bowl game if they want to protect their health for a potential professional contract...BUT, I think there should be some sort of minor financial recovery to the college scholarship offered.

I think a good argument could be made for that if players start to sit out the rest of the regular season once their team loses its second or third game and has no chance at playing for a championship.
