Colin Holb-a long snapper in the 6th ?now yinz have something legitimate to ***** at.

Coates is damaged goods why would he still be worth a 3rd?

That is like buying a new car, and a year later the frame gets bent in a drive by.

You won't get near what you purchased it for...

Why you talking cars????? We got us a RB who rapssssss. Take his brand new cd and play it 10,000 times and then try to sell it,...... You will get a handful of nothing. N ow take that same CD and sell it after you have only opened it and listened to it ONE time,....... USE the same hand and WhoALa ........... Nothing. HHHaaaaaahhhaHHaaaa

Salute the nation

The biggest mistakes NFL teams make involve big $s, not late round picks. Ladarius Green was a popular signing. That will cost the Steelers exponentially more, both in $s and opportunity, than a 6th round LS. Same goes for Hayden, should he turn out to be a disappointment. 6th round picks are a silly thing to fret over.

Hey Trog, Green didn't cost us much. His contract was structured with a low signing bonus, in case he was hurt. He was, and it didn't hurt us at all.

I didn't watch any Rams preseason games and they don't have the training camp coverage the Steelers do.

Yeah I checked around some message boards and there wasn't anywhere near the discussion about the bottom of the roster players like there is here. We really do have a knowledgeable fan base.

We still paid him a nice salary that could have been used elsewhere and likely disregarded signing or drafting other prospects at his position thinking we had it covered with an experienced veteran.

Yes we paid him a salary but as TE's go if I remember correctly it was in the bottom third for starting TE's in the league.

Gotcha, You were talking about his actual money and I was talking about his dead money.

It was tough to know the risk commitment to his actual money without knowing the severity of his injuries. It would have been a hindsight reaction to an unfortunate situation. At least we have that money now, and I believe, even with the dead money, we are paying less for our starting TE this year than we would have paid for Green this year. I'll look it up.

Green cap cost would have been $6.1875M if he was still rostered this year. $5M in salary and $1.1875M in prorated signing bonus

Since Green was cut, his dead money is $3,562,500 and he is off the books.
McDonald is $2.615625M against the cap
The total charge for the dead money and having McDonald is $6,178,125

So the Steelers essentially saved $9,375 by getting rid of Green to have McDonald. That is called positive cap management.

But dead money is never positive cap management. Hindsight is 20/20 and the Steelers were wise to both limit the signing bonus and cut ties not chasing bad $s with good $s. But my original point remains, dollar amount is what is relevant in determining how much of a mistake was made. Sixth round picks don't carry big $s.

Dead money is unavoidable. There are no teams in the league that don't have dead money. The trick is, if you sign a big money free agent, and he turns out to be a dud, that it doesn't cap strap your team, and in this instance, it didn't.

There are contracts on our team that would decimate our cap if we had to drop them. AB would carry a $28M dead money hit, Big Ben at $18M, Decastro at $19.5M, Bell at $12M, Pouncey, Gilbert & Watt in the $8M range each, Heyward $7M, Hayden, Villa, Mitchell, and Burns in the $6M range, Dupree around $5M. $3.5M is nothing compared to most of our contracts.

Dead money due to injury releases are pretty standard for the league. What you don't want is dead money from a healthy player that is underperforming and has to be let go. Woodley and Pola are the only 2 players in recent history that made big hits to our cap with their releases. I also think both were 2 year hits.

I'm reminded of a few years ago when Greg Warren was injured. Our punt and kick teams went in the crapper in a hurry. Ruined the season. Not hating drafting a long snapper

The last time Warren was injured and out for the season they won the Super Bowl, I believe.

It was the in-game injury to Warren that cost us when Harrison snapped it out of the endzone.

I just don't get it at all. 7th would be stupid 6th is straight up retarded. All they have to do is start calling long snappers in the 7th round and say we've had Greg Warren for 10+ years as our long snapper and he's hurt and not going to play the upcoming season. We want you to fight out for the LS position. Bam, done any long snapper out there would have signed as an UDFA for us.

And we lost our punter!
