After watching reruns of last two preseason games why in the world would Tomlin keep Coates. You hear all the raves of him on special teams, which he did not do one thing. He truly never has learned to fight for the ball or come back to the ball. We have enough receivers on this team that can make plays. So what is the skinny, just because he was a high draft choice or Tomlin can't see where others can add to this team.

I don't know why you think Coates sucks on ST. Someone just linked an article in the other thread regarding Coates on ST and Hunter not.

Last year, I think there were only 2 people (Nix/Mattekevich) with more ST tackles (solo + Assists) than Coates. And he had broken fingers for 11 or 12 games.

Coates had the est average on the team for KO returns along with the longest. His average (if it stayed there for enough KO's to qualify, would have been 5th in the NFL. Of those who did qualify as leaders in that stat (1.25 KO returns per game), 7 had a KO return longer than 44.

Thats the problem when you start hating a player you cant see the forest for the trees

He's a walk free agent. That's my issue with him. We aren't bringing him back next year. Roll with Hunter and move on.

Trade him for the best pick we can get, 5, 6 or 7th rounder and move on with Hunter

Yep. That has been mentioned before. And I say TRADE HIM if possible.

Key dropped passes and multiple injures can do that to a player. The higher his draft round, the greater the disappointment.

Would you take this deal? Coates to whomever for a 5th round pick?

No i wouldnt. Too much upside. I dont knock players for getting injured. Im not trading my depth either

What has Hunter shown, in his career that puts him above Coates? around 50% targets to catch ratio? I mentioned in another thread that Coates ****** year last year was comparable to Hunter's best. and Coates played with broken fingers.

As mentioned in the article someone posted somewhere else, Coates plays ST and Hunter does not. Even if Hunter is, marginally, better, does that make up for not playing ST? It wouldn't, to me, and I don't think it does with Tomlin. The difference in skill has to be enough to overcome the ST issue. I don't know how anyone can see that much more in Hunter.

The last preseason game, Hunter got 1 target and didn't catch it. Coates had 4 targets and caught 1. Those are targets/catch and doesn't reference whether they were actually catchable, btw. Both have 8 targets in preseason, one more catch for Coates and 5 more yeards. 1.4 ypc avg advantage goes to Coates with the longest giving Hunter an edge (9yrds over 8 yards).

Tomlin stated if you are not a starter you better play ST. Coates does. Hunter doesn't.

Yep. If Hunter was another version of Bryant, that might be out the window. He appears to be another, non-ST player, version of Coates.

I think Hunter could be beneficial to the team, especially with any in-game injuries. In the 53 man roster thread some people have both Coates and Hunter on the team, while leaving off Maxey. I think, I'd be OK with that.

Only way I trade Coates now post TE and CB pickup is for a worthy FS so I could dump Golden.

Hunter has a way better catch to drop ratio than Sammie.

Way? Even considering Coates had broken fingers and hunter did not. When I looked at hunter's stats it was but 50%, except for the year he had very few receptions.

I'd expect to see a lot of hunter and Coates tonight.

There is a big difference between my catch to drop ratio and catch percentage vs targets. If your QB sucks, you will have a low catch percentage. Still Sammie was in the 40s last year. Catch to drop I feel is a better representation of a receiver's reliability.

Sorry, you said catch to drop. Thought you said catch to target

I would agree on catch to drop ratio being better if I knew where those stats came from. To my knowledge it is not an official NFL stat. Sort of the reason I don't trust the pff stats. 5 people might give you 3 or more different results.

Hates has nothing to do with the trees and forest, this is this year and Coates has shown zero. How many play tonight has he been in on. You win with players wanting to make plays, Coates does not fall in that category.

I think they gave Coates the looks last week and Hunter this week.

Hunter got one look last week. How does that fit with your diatribe?
